Why do people say one side of the earth would freeze and the other be really hot? That's not true. If you think about it the earth rotates around the sun so all sides of the earth will eventually get a bit of sun. All that will happen is the days will get longer. In fact I think 1 year (or one rev of the earth around the sun) would be the equivalent of 1 day. But with the sudden stop and us smashing into things/off into space (although we'd probably burn up leaving the atmosphere at that speed) then I guess we won't get to see this even anyway.

well really you wouldnt get to the sun because the earth would just start drifting somewhere but never to the sun. You would never burn alive unless you crash into something.

A one-year long day would definitely cause one side to completely freeze. - Proud member of the [23].

Think about this.
Imagine the Sun and it's gravitational influence is removed in an instant (how is not important for this example). The light from the sun would still be travelling towards us, so we wouldnt know about it for 10mins (or however long it takes to reach us, again not important for this example), however..
Would we zoom off into space at the same instant the sun was taken, or when the last light from the sun hit us?
G.
I've got an idea--an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I'm talking about

Gravity goes at the speed of light, so we wouldn't know it until after 8 minutes, same as the light.

lol, I love these topics. I think I had a similar dream when I was little, and now so much as looking up at night, or photos of planets and stuff makes me shudder. xD
with that in mind, discuss the following scenarios in terms of what would happen/how long before you died/died of. (morbidity 4tw:
1.The sun instantaneously replaced with a pulsar star with earth caught directly in its beam.
2. You awake one morning to find yourself falling through the atmosphere of a Red Giant (much cooler than the sun)
3. You awake one morning to find yourself, your house, and everything therein on the surface of a White Dwarf.
4. The position of the moon replaced with that of Jupiter.
5. Awake one morning to find yourself falling through the clouds of Jupiter.
6. The sun replaced with Rigel. xD
7. The moon replaced by a magnetar

if the world stopped spinning you would be slammed into the closest thing to the east of you at like 700mph. --------------

1.The sun instantaneously replaced with a pulsar star with earth caught directly in its beam. --> After 8 minutes, the lights go out. A couple of minutes later the earth is ripped to shreds
2. You awake one morning to find yourself falling through the atmosphere of a Red Giant (much cooler than the sun) --> Not much, you still burn alive.
3. You awake one morning to find yourself, your house, and everything therein on the surface of a White Dwarf. --> White dwarfs are white hot, so see 2. That is if you don't get squashed before that.
4. The position of the moon replaced with that of Jupiter. --> We fall towards jupiter and die from suffocation probably.
5. Awake one morning to find yourself falling through the clouds of Jupiter. --> see above.
6. The sun replaced with Rigel. xD --> We would be inside rigel, so we'd burn instantly.
7. The moon replaced by a magnetar --> uhm... We all put on our tin foil helmets and we're ok? unless I'm missing something....

Quote: Ok, i had a nightmare (the dream not the ship) where the world stopped spinning and gravity stopped to exist.
Well, scientifically addressing the two issues you have proposed in your statement:
If the earth stopped spinning, it wouldn't take long before giant storms, greater then those seen in "The Day After Tommorrow" and much more rapid. This is because the winds of the earth are dictated by the spinning motion, as well as our ocean currents. Both of these factors enfluence our weather patterns. Think of the "Great Storm" on Jupiter.
If the earth lost gravitational pull, we would instantly be pulled into space. Because Space is a vaccum, or actually a very very low pressure environment, and a fluid of high pressure will always flow towards lower pressure. Gravity is what holds the air on the earth and maintains our current atmospheric pressure. It's like you just turned on your vaccuum, or a better analogy, you just poked a ballon with a needle. We would be caught up and blown by the expanding air into the middle of space.
Lastly, one of your other questions, if the sun would dissappear suddenly leaving us in darkness. We probably wouldn't last longer then a few days, a week at the maximum, due to no food supply and extreme cold temperatures. The earth will either collide with other planets, or in my opinion, most likely be attacted to jupitor and orbit it.

The correct answer was that everyone except the most stringent vegetarians die instantly as all ferrous metal is violently pulled from our bodies toward the magnetar, leaving a pile of dust and/or gelatinous goo. ;) -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |

Well, you're right. It would, eventually, but "eventually" is a couple of trillion years and the earth won't last that long anyway. ________________________________________________
