Ok, i had a nightmare (the dream not the ship) where the world stopped spinning and gravity stopped to exist.
Now i got into a discussion with a couple of friends of what we would die of first. Here's a few examples....
No gravity means you would fly into space right ?
Would you die because of the disappearance of the ozon layer first, so you would burn alive by the sun? Would you fly into space effectively imploding because of the vacuum ? Would you fly into space and freeze before you would reach space ? Would we die of lack of oxygen first ?
I'm quite curious at the moment about this as everyone seems to have a different idea.
Might be a bit morbid but this has educational value somewhere
PS : In my nightmare I just flew into space with bits and pieces of my house and I woke up before I died so I didn't get an answer there.

Gravity is not created by the Earth spinning, but rather by its mass.

If there's no gravity there wouldn't ba an atmosphere (as the air is held to the earth by it). So you could die from several things, but most importantly I think would be no air. But as stated gravity isn't a result of the earth spinning. What would happen if the earth stopped spinning is that one side would be dark all the time and the other side light, making one side warm as hell and the other side cold as the north pole Therefore people would move to the line where light and dark meat and try to live on in a very crowded and small space

The Earth spinning actually makes you weigh less! The centrifugal force at the equator is in fact enough to make u weigh 2% less or something than you would at the poles. ---------------- Training of 'Binary Numbers' to level 1001 has been completed. Very little.
However if there was no gravity the atmosphere would dissapear very quickly, question is would we die of oxygen starvation or explosiv deconpreesion?

Here's another thing to consider.
If gravity was suddenly turned off, the attraction between the Earth and the Sun would cease. The Earth would then fly off into space at a tangent to its orbit.
Would everything freeze before the atmosphere evaporates?

Well it depends.. if only earth's gravity would cease, then earth would still orbit the sun, while the atmosphere would then proceed in almost a straight line in the direction it was going when gravity ceased, effectively peeling away from earth in a few days.
My money is on explosive decompresion first.
Of course you could always go off floating with the atmosphere..

well if the earth stopped spinning pretty much the only thing that would happen is 1 side of the earch would be warmer than the rest, basically the equator wouldnt matter anymore?? my theories.

Gravity is an interaction between two bodies created from their masses.
If you stop gravity on Earth, the Earth will no longer be attracted to the Sun.

the earth spins fast, if it would stop spinning i guess the g-force will send you flying to the east and the g-force will kill ya first.

Ever heard of a little thing called momentum? If the earth stopped spinning, we'd all shoot sideways at speeds of anything up to a thousand miles an hour, and 90% of the population would die of hitting walls very, very hard.
If you want to eliminate the momentum of everything ON earth, as well as the planet itself, then ... mehh, not much. One side of earth would, within a few weeks, become uninhabitable due to being cold and dark. The other side would, within a few years, become equally uninhabitable due to being too hot.
If you stop gravity, then the first time anyone sitting outside tries to stand up, they'll launch themselves into space and die of cold and/or oxygen deprivation when they reach the upper troposphere. (Imagine being moved from where you sit now, to the top of Everest, in five minutes and without any warm clothing or oxygen apparatus. You won't last long.)
Those who manage to stay on the surface will also die of oxygen deprivation when the atmosphere leaks off. That won't take too long either, although I don't suppose anyone's ever done the calculations to find out. ________________________________________________

But reading the thread most people say oxygen deprivation (sp?) will kill us first?

Oxygen deprivation will kill anybody first, out of anything, if it's an option. You can't survive without oxygen for more than five minutes; so apart from the ones hurtling sideways and smashing into walls, it's merely a question of how long the atmosphere stays around. My guess is, a couple of hours before it's unbreathable. ________________________________________________

Yeah, you have a point with that momentum thing, we'll smash our head into the wall or something if eart stops spinning... BUT lets just say that the world keeps spinning and gravity goes zero, the earth would just fall apart, core pressure is so high it would just... explode. BUT, hypothetically speaking, if earth itself would hold, air would be unbreathable in few, seconds, I think... Airpressure is 1.2 kg/m3 on sealevel, if that suddenly turn to 0... I have no idea what the hell could happen ;P it's not just going to float out into space easy, you guys have to think about that... :D
I might be talkin gibberish, never had any education about this sort of stuff

yea but thats 'sudden stop'. the earth IS gradually grinding to a halt because of friction of the waves hitting the shores, stuff like that. i think its every 100 years we lose 2 milliseconds...not sure about that though could be less time.. when the tsunami hit 2 years ago (on the 26th dec.) it did wat the waves had done in about 1000 years i think, not exactly sure.
oh and on a subtly related subject, astronomers now think our chance of getting hit by an asteroid is one in 50,000 instead of one in a billion cause of a threatening asteroid somewhere out there due to hit in about 50 years. i am NOT sure about that, i just remember reading that somewhere
I make sigs/banners 5mill each, convo/evemail for details |

I think we'd all die because of that giant ...something (planet, asteroid, comet, meteor, you take your pick) that hit Earth so hard it made it stop in the first place. Yep, that'll do. ---------- Please fix the scan probes!!! (also included a guide to use them) |

The atmosphere would dissipate almost instantly, so we would definately die of the decompression. A human can survive maybe 30 seconds in absolute vacuum, so suffociation would not be a problem I think

That must be like, infinitely improbable, so yup, that's what would happen.
