I thought it was something to do with rebooting the servers because if you left them on 24/7 they'd get jammed up with data and go crazy. as i'm sure you're aware events of this kind can lead to a "skynet" situation in which mankind is exterminated by our own toasters and other electric household goods. This is, of course, unacceptable in polite society.
Downtime is for your own good. although something does seem to have gone horribly wrong today.

Multiplayer games usually have some sort of maintenance..
They based the game off of tradewars so they had to have Extern ;)..
All in all.. Downtime is a good feature that should clear unneeded temp caches, allow them to run some database error corrections and that sort..
I guess the best thing is that extern would mean that "if" the game corrupts or you need a roll back that they could potentially have a backup for every day.

You know if skynet wasn't so hell-bent on killing a single revolutionary it might have won the war 
Uhg I had so much I wanted to get done by now, but I can't and probably won't be around when they finally figure out they left the dang servers unplugged  Opps.
Like somebody said in another thread ... Some info would be nice, even if it was bad news.

I know the only one true reason why we have daily downtime - because CCP fear (there were cases with other games) that if some game-maniacs won't eat at least one time per day - they'll die :)

Important Announcement
This morning we have been investigating a number of account hack attempts. 57
accounts were compromised and as a result, we started full investigation and
lockdown procedures. This culminated in the lockdown of Tranquility during downtime
until we had finished our investigation.
As a preventive measure, to ensure account security, we have reset passwords and
will send out an email to selected accounts and ask them to change their passwords.
At the same time, we would like to remind all our customers to never give out their
passwords and regularly change them in account management. Remember, we will
never ask you for your password.
We want to emphasize that we do not store billing information, the only risk was
concerning password usage and subsequent abuse of the accounts in question.
We thank you for your patience in this matter and deeply apologize for the
inconvenience this has caused.
Note: If your password has been reset and your email hasn't arrived yet, you can
manually reset your password again through account management. Please allow up
to an hour before the new password is sent due to the added load.

i think people are entitled to endurance gaming... should'nt tar everyone with the same brush!
if someone decides to kill someone cause because their virtual sword has been stolen - then they were already a maniac before they played games..

Sadly: Eve is my life. When I can't play Eve, it makes me want to go and get a life. They really need to put on the website the server status. I wounder how many new players (although we have been kinda crowded lately) we're losing because they don't understand why they can't connect and just unistall the game and never come back.
What is going on!? A report would be nice.
Anyone able to give me the Eve-Radio IRC server for using mIRC? I don't want to go in through a Java.

No, DT is not so the roids can spawn, though they do spawn during/after a DT if they spawn at all.
Eve is a "Single Univers" with no shards... and so since they only have so much money (sure, lots of it but not infinate... well, sure, sorta infinate since we keep pumping it into them.. but anyway the point is) they don't have infinate servers and they have to juggle the servers between systems.
So, what they do is do a DT for maintance, where they more then likely backup all the info, run maintance on their databases (that's best done during a DT), and then they restructure what servers are assigned to what systems. So one day a system may have only 1 server, but then the next it may have 10 servers. They use history and such to make the decisions... and if there were a bunch of people in the system one day, then that system will give more server space the next.
However, right now they plain and simply don't have enough servers and/or CPU power... and I read somewhere they will switch from 64 to 128 bit or something like that soon in order to keep up. Though I don't think that's why the servers are down right now.
It really agrivates me they didn't let us know this was going to happen. Then again, maybe they couldn't. However, putting something up on the news right away (instead of after the servers are already back up) to give us some idea of what's going on (and let us know they ARE working on it) would be nice. Perhaps an ETA of sometype would be extremely nice.
Eve is my life, and when they interrupt service they are interrupting my life. Maybe I should get help.

A 128 bit CPU, oh the possibilities..... (not yet, wait a few more years)
Anyway, I've watched asteroids grow in size whilest I was mining other asteroids, so I'm thinking there are certain floating points on which they grow.
As for the reason for downtime: Computers have threads, which use up memory. When a thread is done, it's cleared from memory, if it starts taking up too much memory, it uses the page file which is space on a hard drive that acts like memory (just slower). When these threads close, sometimes (mostly with Windows) they don't free up all of the memory they used, which reduces the amount of total memory.
If you've ever played a game or used an application with tons of memory leaks for a while, you might get a notice near your system tray saying something to the effect that "Your system is low on memory, increasing page file size". Restarting your computer will fix this as all of your memory is completely cleared, as it requires constant power to retain its contents.
In addition to a restart, CCP probably does some routine maintenance, and checks up on things.
If I'm way off, someone correct me...
