I'm still suffering from memory leaks, particularly during lvl4 missions where there are lots of objects in space (i.e walls, bunkers, control towers npcs etc) If I do more than one of these in a session, my RAM rapidly fills up with eve, getting to around 400MB before windows finally decides to page, normally at the most inconveniant time (ie warping into a bunch of npcs) minimising the eve client works as a tempory fix, but it tends to make the situation worse a few minutes later. The only real fix I've found is to restart the Eve client.
Generally the lag seems to have improved, but torrinos still suffers in the evenings(GMT), normally 2-3 seconds of lag. ------------------------------------------- He's NOT the Jovian ambassador, He's a very Naughty boy! |

I lag when i call up the friends list which has about seventy people in it. I lag when access the market. I lag when I submitted a petition. I have noticed a little lag while warping if it runs by someones SS.
I have not been lagging while around two domi's w/ all their drones out. I have zero lag around npc's.
The lag while jumping has improved for me.

Once in every 3,4 jumps, the client gets stuck in jumping, the left bar loses icons and the only solution is to relog. This is not related to a particular system or the number of people in the system. It seems like the client is not receiving anything from the server
Same thing happens while docking and undocking, but much rarer.
There is also a general delay with the market and a terrible delay when you "select all" in a station container and right click on them. This last one is not related with the number of items in the container.
There is a stuttering which I believe is related with the Overview (something like brief screen tearing). Especially in warp, each time the figures and identities in Overview change, there is a micro stutter. This issue popped up after RMR.
There is lag in commanding drones.
There is terrible lag in major systems, like Jita or Sobaseki, but it has been known for long anyway.

It seems to be that there is increased lag in some (all?) systems where npc agents have been moved to recently. .............

Now it seems to take ages logging, maybe because i'm in empire.
Also empire is pretty much unplayable, it takes 10 seconds plus to do ANYTHING. Doing agent missions is a complete **** take as mods get stuck on or off, I thought i'd pop down there last night for a doss and have decided to go back to 0.0 asap.
Absolutely horrific lag.

Edited by: Valan on 14/01/2006 18:01:18 After travelling over 5 regions Caldari space around Jita and hageken is the worst.
What is strange when I'm nearer those places I'm eating up more memory than the other account which is elsewhere in the universe.
What does worry me when I get stuck in Caldari space and crash 20 seconds later my other character crashes. Its not a network spike because I'm monitoring the connection.
EDIT: Its not a ropey model or something that you only get in Caldari space is it?

Ok, so they "fix" R&D and such saying its too much lag inducing and yet now all I see is lag at every corner of the spacelanes
Got to make you think about if the "fix" really did that.
Now, if you are going to let 50 million people join this game and your support structure is not able to even handle the massive 20+k already straining the servers, why dont you stop adding more until you fix the problem that is here already.
This game seems to be heading towards EQ status...SOE never learned their lessons about crappy structure and constantly baiting more players to come join to increase the problems already present. Just kept adding more eye candy to the dumbasses who didnt know any better and were enthralled with that.
I understand its supposed to make money, but come on...lets get some things fixed so we can enjoy the game and not sit for 10+ minutes looking at a ship suspended in animation due to the massive amounts of lag (and Im not even in a spacelane with tons of players...had about 50-65 only...thats just nuts!!!)

I lost my ferox to lag when hunting belt rats in 0.0. I was the only person in system, but when I warped to the first belt, I couldn't see any roids. I couldn't warp out, activate modules or anything. 10 minutes later, the roids appeared and my ferox had miraculously transformed into a pod and loot can. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

fleet fight, serpentis carrier warps in, lag renders me useless and I watch as the battle goes on. I seem to update all visual things on the spot except I cant activate nor control my ship in any way. After the carrier died everything returned almost to normal and I was able to control my ship again. Drones scattered across the battlefield did not cause lag. Only when the Thanatos left did the lag leave.

Edited by: Azraelion on 14/01/2006 23:19:49 Today it's the conversation with any agent that's almost impossible at the moment, well, not impossible but really really slow. After selecting "start conversation", I can make a coffee and come back just to see the window that popped up instantly still black. Same for the different steps when talking to them (Need something to do, more details, yes, no, etc.) As stated in my prior post, lag always seems to hit my worst in systems with many missions runners around, after leaving a system like Hageken, it instantly becomes alot better...even Jita is alot better, at least that's my impression.

When I release drones or order them back in the game would lag. Short burst of lag each drone. I'm not sure, but this may have had to do with drone graphics entering space OR the interface moving the drones. This "lag" is video lag, so not technically lag.. but client stalling, but I'm sure you know what I mean. However, last time I used my drones the stuttering when releasing them and brining them in was a lot less. I'm not sure if you patched this or if it was because I had just started the game.
As for real Lag, serve lag. Hub systems and even non-hub main systems lag lag, for everything. Undocking, docking, jumping, right clicking an item for a menu (often delays, not in video lag sense). Sometimes market as well, but I've had good success with the market in main systems.. so not sure. I used to do missions in some main systems and the NPCs would randomely reset, regenerating to full health. Lots of shots wouldn't evne register, so I could sit for like 15 minutes in my BS firing on a single frig.

i think this has something to do with the "load balancing" don't know how it works but i guess it is stealing processing from low pop areas to give to high pop areas i'm in an extremely low pop area in .5/.4/.3 the .5 where the station i run back and forth to has at most 3 others than myself - extremely slow reaction to mod activation - seemingly no response to docking request - if i do get to dock you can imagine it takes an age to get back out in the surrounding .4/.3 area where i am the only player transferring from one can to another or basically doing any activity seems to be ignored by the game this is not "balanced"

I lag in general anytime there is over 12K online since RMR's last fix patch. No other explanation other than something is wrong. I wish I could be more specific, but from the moment I try to log on (up to 5 mins) to the time I try to do anything I just lag. On a good day during peak it is 32 seconds to a bad day of 5 minutes 3 seconds (no lie). I did fine after RMR up to this last fix. You should have seen me today trying to do Angel Strike, freaky scary lag and 10 BS's firing on me. I expected to be dead every 30+ seconds because of the delay between activation and confermation. Was in Veisto with around 40 in system at the time. This really has to be fixed. I am sorry for losing my mind earlier, but as much as I love the game the lag is driving me totally nuts.
PS I apologize for another post earlier on a different thread which I cannot find atm.

Right-click on multiple objects.
Moving stuff between cargo bays and hangars. Doesn't take minutes, but it does take more time than you'd expect.
Opening containers.
Those seem to be the operations that lag even when the system is working relatively well. -------------------- This solution to BM-related server resource usage can reduce lag with the same interface. |

Edited by: R Dan on 15/01/2006 18:08:46 these last few days I've noticed ALOT of lag. I've been based around veisto for ages now. but the lag here is unplayable atm.
also - The agent i used in niya (little lag, only got that when a mission took me to jita) has moved to Motsu....even before these last few days of lag Motsu was a lag hole and has convinced some of my corp mates to move onto different agents.
You ask what I do to get this unbearable lag? nothing! its just there. I often atm get timed out responses when I'm logging in. I also get a long wait while jumping, and smaller ones when docking or undocking. Sometimes this pause would be long enough for me to consider filling a stuck petition...before my client closes and tells me that its lost the connection to the server.
Right clicking on something in your hanger used to bring up a menu instantaneously, and right clicking on a corp hanger item might bring a small delay the first time.... now i right click on an item and it doesnt do anything for a good few seconds in some cases up to 25 seconds. if i do get out into space (and not need to jump) its not been so bad. I even managed to mine some ice last night...although launching drones too 10 seconds or so to launch after i clicked it.
chat windows....sometimes I'll write something, and then write a followup comment and not be able to actually send it for 15 seconds (i assume because the last message hasnt got there yet). I also had a problem yesterday that my chat window would suddenly work and I'd get the text from the last few minutes all in one go...and then it would pause again
Systems where I've had it worse than others are: Motsu, Veisto, Torrinos. Yoma was fine by comparison
Its not my computer, or my connection (I've been monitoring both today)
tbh in the past when lag got as bad as this we'd expect an unscheduled server reboot warning :P or a node to drop and it all get better again :/
of course I'm also getting the dreaded EVE memory eating monster *rawr* that is quite happy to chomp all avaliable memory - given alittle bit of time. unlike the others that get it I have to reboot my machine to clear the problem, rather than just restart the client/minimise it. other wise it comes back worse after a short time. Bite me....for i taste good :)

The situations I get lag most often: 1)Interacting with jet cans - looting the Pirate Invasion Level 3 mission has just taken me over an hour. 2)In-station operations: showing info, placing stuff into containers etc. Oddly operations like sorting or repackaging/stacking all do not lag at all. Right-clicking on groups of items takes a lot of time (more than 10 or 20 items at a time). 3)Leaving station. It might take a lot of time and sometimes bizarre things happen like the one reported by the RA guy above. 4)NPC Combat. Modules activation requests answers are often delayed up to 30 secs or ignored at all by the game. Skirmishes where NPCs swarm me with missiles lag the most. 5)Drone deploying/command acknowledging. 6)Warp commands lagging 30 secs or more.
Some other observations: 1) Lags seems to come in 'spikes' or 'waves'. For instance, I get lag for 15 minutes, then it disappears completely for a few minutes, and then it reappears. This spiking is independent from being engaged in combat with NPCs or looting cans completely alone. 2) Lag is obviously correlated with the number of people logged on, but this correlation does not seem to be of a linear kind i.e. right after DT there is no lag, but as soon as the server has been dealing with more than 10k players for a couple of hours, the game is extremely laggy. 3) I have the impression these lag experiences appeared during the week after New Year's Eve. Before New Year's Eve, game was laggy as usual (Jita, Oursulaert, the weekend after the Dec 17th) but very responsive otherwise. I feel performance has severely degraded in the past ten days (at least for me).
As many other posters in this thread have noted the current mess with lag seems to have been caused by some hotfix applied during DT. Maybe something was rushed out of the door to soon and unleashed the current lag epidemic.
Other possibility is that what we are experiencing is a very effective load balancing algorithm. Effective, in the sense that it actually balances the server resources allocated to each player. However, when capacity has been well overrun, load balancing won't improve the quality of service - it's not the same dividing equally 100 amongst 10000 than 100 amongst 20000. Possibly, the load balancing system is allocating too much resources to highly travelled systems like Jita and the like, starving the rest of Eve playerbase.
And finally, something is definitely NOT working right with the Database. After RMR deployment we all saw several 'emergency fixes' on Eve underlying DB. When an IT guy says 'emergency fix' he really means 'a really nasty kludge has been implemented to gain some breathing space'. Maybe some of the rushing DB fixes has crippled Eve DB performance (very good when CCP deployed those flashy Transac harddisks) and a carefully auditory is in order.
However I think that CCP are in a very difficult position now (or maybe impossible). A very likely scenario is that the number of users connected on average will drop sharply in one or two weeks (in conjunction with some unevitable account cancellations). To make things worse, it is very probable that (also unavoidable) management pressure will prevent devs from taking effective decisive actions to address the system issues.
And now, the typical/topical 'What I would do if I was CCP boss?' section comes: 1) Just resignate to loss some customers and get flak from computer games press. Customers can be regained and press can be cheaply bought 2) Redesign the map once more so that there are no 'hubs' anymore i.e. add more stargates so the graph is more densely connected. 3) Make sure that all NPC corp stations have one or two agents. High quality (10+) agents should not be placed in systems with sec status above 0.5. You should try to figure out which would be the optimal distribution of agents so that the distribution of players is uniform (or quasi-uniform) 4) Just forbid bookmark copying and insta-jumping for some time.

This could help quite a bit your load balancing system.)

I've been running two clients on different machines since getting my new kit and it seems that a lot of the lag is down to machine spec. Obviously the worst lag isn't but the whole UI 'experience' is a lot better with my new machine. Having a chance to compare the two it really shows that my old machine was inadequate:
New machine:AMD64 GFX:6800LE Old machine:P4 3.4 GFX:Go570
Interestingly even things like fitting out ships is quicker on the new machine. -- (Battle hardened miner)

I have resorted to only fly small, inexpensive ships, because, i wont risk, hacs, BS or any other specialized ships. lost 3 ships in a week ,due to Lag....normally im a happy little PvP pilot, always going into the frey, not mind loosing anything to superior tactics, or if i face a better pilot.
Well, right now it is like playing the lottery, and quite frankly i cannot be arsed, exuse my french, to log in and fight, why bother.
This time i undocked from a station, in a carecel, couldnt see anything but a big black slice of the station i was undcoking from, no modules worked, could not hit warp, because i didnt even get that option.
This is destroying the gameplay, and allthough CCP promises new server hardware, i dont think it will soleve the problem, i suspect your code is so bugged, that you cannot find head or tail in it.
My machine specs are as follows:
AMD64 3800 4Gb of pc 3200 Ram 256 Mb Nvidia 6800 GT GF card Cable connection.
As you can see i am pretty much up there on top of the line equipment.
I am one unsatisfied customer right now
