Edited by: Drigan on 10/01/2006 01:16:09 I have lvl 3 in Caldari cruiser and Amarr cruiser and could go either way. I'm getting tired of the travel time of missiles with my Caracal and how it can't tank well in PvP. I've heard of Moa's being snipers while Mallers can tank but I'm worried about the Maller's range. Which would be better in pvp between Maller and Moa?
Later on, I will go for a battlecruiser but haven't heard a lot about the Prophecy. So Prophecy or Ferox (again for pvp)?
I already know I want an Armaggedon for a battleship but with cruisers and battlecruisers, I don't know which way to go.

I want to get this in before the souless stat minions get in here and ruin it for everyone...
I had a similar choice to make way back in the mists of time. Now many people will advocate one set of ships over the other for many statistical reasons. They may even be right for all I know. But the big question you need to ask yourself is this: How do I want to play?
For me the answer was shield tanking and range. It's the situation I feel most comfortable in. It terrifies me to willingly let a ship lose it's shields and rely on armour alone. I start to question the reasoning behind having shields at all...
For this reason I focused on the caldari. I can still fly most amarr ships (everything up to the Prophecy) but I'm just happier in Caldari. Similarly I know alot of players who just click better with the amarr philosophy and wouldn't dream of flying a Railboat.
Ultimately whatever ship you choose you have to adjust your tactics to match. If you fly a Moa you want to make sure you engage enemies with a shorter range than you at YOUR optimal. A Maller can push out alot of damage and take it too but if you choose your battles right in a Moa you get a good few seconds where you can test the waters of your enemy before you have to decide to warp out or not. If you go for short range you're basically commiting to any fight you start even if you relise halfway that you're gonna lose.
Also it's two totally different skill training trees. If you later want to fly Amarr in the battleship class I would reccommend you fly a Maller in cruiser and a Prophecy in BC. You'll learn the best tactics for Amarr ships and you can focus all your time on armour tanks and energy weapons. Even though I started out flying Amarr and Caldari fairly equally 2 years later I can't armour tank for toffee as all my points are in shield skills.

Hmm I see what you're saying. That makes sense, I don't like armor tanking either but I've tried out a Punisher and set it up so I could armor tank 75k rats in 0.3 space.
I wanted an Amarrian battleship because of the look and I heard it could snipe. But I suppose I could try that on a Moa.

well if you want a geddon the choice is obvious.. as far as I know, the maller can snipe quite well, using heavy beams, adequate skills and cristals you should reach 50+ kms..

Then I suggest you fly the Amarrian cruisers, in order to familiarize yourself with the (very similar) tactics and setups you'll be using later on.
Of course, there's absolutely nothing stopping you in trying both, either... ------------------------------------------- Sometimes, I wake up but keep on dreaming. |

I have severe Battleship envy when it comes to the looks of an Apoc Vs a Raven. It tore me up inside to turn my back on one of the most attractive ships in the game and focus on what turned out to be a pig ugly ship that looks like it's design was inspired by a large stack of spikes falling over and getting stuck in a block of cement.
On the upside the Ferox is beautiful.
I shall crusade for a redesign of the Raven to appear much closer to that of a giant F117a, sleek flat BS 4tw.

Caldari are getting a tier 3 Battleship soon with the next patch and it might actually be the best sniper in the game. --------------------------------------------- <Make ECM Burst useful> ECM Burst Idea! |

Wouldn't all the races get a tier 3 bs?
And if the Raven gets a makeover, I'll stick with Caldari then.
I still don't know much about battlecruisers and I'm on the verge of piloting one. I hope the Ferox can do well in pvp. I keep hearing the Brutix and other BCs.

The Ferox is a great ship, you really can't go wrong with it. I was able to solo all level 3 missions with it after only playing the game for 1.5 months. The Brutix is a good ship but it takes about 2 or 3x as much training to make it perform as well as the Ferox at 1.5 months of training. Believe me, I've tried it...
Also despite what the bonuses might be for the Ferox it's a missile boat. Missiles are tactically more flexible for combat than blasters or rails.
But if you're going to go for the apocolypse I would say just go Ammar now, work on your gunnery skills, get the Prophecy BC (It's even better than the Ferox IMO), then get an Apoc. Also revel in the fact that your ships are the best looking.
