For the aircraft naming gurus that know what I'll be talking about, I use this for my interceptor :
[TFL] Foxhound A4/5
[TFL] - Templarii Foreign Legion (division within my corp) Foxhound - (F, for Fighter, NATO jetfighter naming for warsaw pact jets) A4 - Model A, 4th Variant of A /5 - 5th ship of its kind (mean I blew up x4 A4 variants of my Crow so far :P)
Should I modify the crow slightly, ie replacing my nano with an overdrive, it would be an A5 type (minor upgrade), while if I had a complete overhaul using missile launchers instead of rockets, I would most likely name it B1/1. Fun fun.

Frigs should be FF, that's standard navy frigate designation.

Okay, using more material I pulled offline about the US Navy, suggestions provided thusfar, and designations I invented, I've come up with a new system. Similar to the old, slightly modified. (designations were grouped based upon hull types, not role types) ________________________________________________________
Frigates
FF | Frigate FFG | Guided Missile Frigate FA | Assault Frigate FI | Interceptor FSP | Special Ops
Destroyers
DD | Destroyer DDG | Guided Missile Destroyer DDI | Interdictor
Cruisers
CL | Cruiser CA | Heavy Assault Cruiser CR | Recon CG | Logistics
Battlecruisers
CB | Battlecruiser CC | Command Ship
Battleships
BB | Battleship
Capital Ships
DN | Dreadnought CV | Spacecraft Carrier CVL | Light Spacecraft Carrier TN | Titan
Industrial
AK | Industrial AP | Transport AF | Freighter BG | Barge
MISC.
AGS | Surveying Ship (moon/asteroid) AH | Hospital Ship AR | Repair Ship ARB | Battle-Damage Repair Ship ARH | Heavy Hull Repair Ship ARS | Salvage Ship
(*note* To show a difference between ships that have gun vs missile technology, I added the extra ##G designations. For example, you could have the Kestrel class frigate designated FFG, where as the Merlin class would only be FF. Whichever hardpoint is in more abundance determines the type of designation veriation. For ships that have the same number of gun vs misile hardpoints, either ## or ##G could be used) ________________________________________________________
Races
CS | Caldari State MR | Minmatar Republic AE | Amarr Empire GF | Gallente Federation ________________________________________________________
Example:
MRV Steel Dog (CV 03) Minmatar Republic Vessel | "ship name" | Spacecraft Carrier "personal operation #" ________________________________________________________
I'll explain the changes made to the above example from the previous system.
The ownership tag remains the same (S {ship} can be substituted for V). The actual ship name, I found, is usually shown in italics. From more research online, the actual designation is displayed in parenthesis, with no dash seperating the numbers. The "personal operation #" basically refers to the number of unique ships of that specific class you have flown (i.e. Vexor class, Scorpion class). CV 03 would mean that particular class of ship type was destroyed two times previously while being flown by your character (sort of like generation counting, but more specific, such as seperately counting red-headed children from blonde children). This retains the real world simularity to commissioning naming, just not on an EVE universal-wide scale. Again, note that ship deaths wouldn't apply towards the hull type (battleship, cruiser), but towards the ship class (Vexor, Scorpion).
For my personal example (yet again), my full ship name would look like:
CSV Warsun (BB 02) Raven class battleship
I've only lost one other battleship, which was also a Raven class. If I hadn't, the designation would be (BB 01).
As for the MISC section, these are designations that could be applied towards ships that aren't specifically made for the role they're filling. For example, let's say you had a Blackbird class cruiser that was fitted for only shield repair. It might be named as such:
CSV Ihealu (AR 05)
Let's also say this ship was destroyed and you got another Blackbird class cruiser, but this time fitted with armor repairing modules:
CSV Ihealu (ARB 06)
Sadly, this ship is also destroyed, and you decide to refit another using only hull repairing modules:
CSV Ihealu (ARH 07)
Okay, I think I'm done modding this to hell and back. Enjoy.

Quote: FF | Frigate FFG | Guided Missile Frigate FA | Assault Frigate
You forgot: FAG | Guided Missile Assault Frigate
I don't think I'd ever put my ship's build in the name... i.e. i wouldn't use the "H is for Healer" kind of designation, makes it too easy for your enemies to know your general config.

hmm then the Kestrel is the only true FFG in the game as its a missle boat.
but whats the Caracal? we need a Guided Missle Cruiser designation. or just use my term "Space Aegis"

I like the idea, but would prefer to use UK Royal Navy terms.
Mind you, one of our newly launched support Frigates is called.... HMS Beaver

Isn't the point of hull numbers to uniquely identify the ships for the service using them, due to the fact that names are recycled? Under this system we can have two ships with same hull number. Not only that, both those ships can be in service concurrently. Say you have a Vexor and a Thorax on different sides of the cluster and you clone jump or shuttle hop between them, operate some time in that area and switch back. Both ships, provided you have only one of them and they are the first of their kind for you, have hull number CL 01. Makes the numbers useful only as version tracking feature, not unique identification. But then, I prefer to look at unique personality of my ships, me being on of them silly RPers and all.

I like Ian M. Banks ship designations.
Which is why I have ships like GCU Reqiem for e, VFP Not Another Scout and VFP Dead Before Dawn
Warning: above post may contain traces of sarcasm. "Corpse cannot be fitted onto ship. Only hardware modules can be fitted." |

He wrote the outstanding Culture novels, as well as a ton of other very good books in both Sci-fi and non genre fields. Go look on Amazon for his books - I heavily recomend Excession to get a feel for the Culture novels, although The Use Of Weapons is the best - if disturbing - book.
Of the non-genre novels, Complicity and The Business are the best, IMO (someone is bound to disagree tho)
The name of my Blackbird, Grey Area, is a reference to one of the GCU ships in Excession. I did consider using the ships nickname instead tho...

So a caracal would be a CLG, and by the same token a Ferox running missles would be a CBG.
I really like this idea and I'm going to do it for most if not all of my ships.

Bah, I'll just stick with my own nameing formula: aea + techlvl aea = adult entertainment actress techlvl = tech level (tech 1 or 2 counterpart of given hull)
Some examples would be my Oneiros which goes under the name "Watase II", or my Thorax by the name of "Selena I".
My old formula was "La " + aea + shipnr shipnr = which ship in line it was. After losing some Ishkurs to NPCs and POSes I figured it wasn't a very motivating way to name the ships that way though. "La Isabel V" died to a G Alliance inty fleet I think.
"GFV 'Haley' ICI-02" might work though, now that I think of it...
I might incorporate your idea. "GFV 'Oso' CAI-02", where art thou?
