Couldn't find a better forum to throw this in, so 'ere we go. (this is a concept for roleplaying purposes)
I was trying to come up with a new name for my ship, when I started thinking about incorporating designations that could be applied to any ship type in EVE. I took existing designations in the US Navy as examples, and added a few of my own. Here's what I came up with:
Combat
FL | Frigate (light) FA | Assault Frigate IC | Interceptor DD | Destroyer ID | Interdictor CL | Cruiser (light) RN | Recon CA | Heavy Assault Cruiser BC | Battlecruiser CO | Command Ship BB | Battleship DN | Dreadnought CV | Carrier TN | Titan
Logistics
BG | Barge IN | Industrial LG | Logistics TR | Transport FR | Freighter
As for showing ownership to the vessel, I had the following:
CS | Caldari State MR | Minmatar Republic AE | Amarr Empire GF | Gallente Federation
Finally, to show power type in the designation:
F | Fusion (Amarr) I | Ion (Gallente) M | Magpulse {Caldari) P | Plasma (Minmatar)
So for an example, let's say you had a Caldari carrier called the "Enterprise." The whole name would look as follows:
CSV Enterprise CVM-01 Caldari State Vessel | "shipname" | Magpulse powered carrier-Tech 01
Since designation numbers in the real world are assigned to ships in the order they were commissioned, this would never work in EVE since there's no accurate count of production numbers. So, I decided to use the number for specifying which type of Tech it is. I used 01 instead of just 1, since I'm assuming that Tech numbers will go up to at least 10. Ship classes should remain the same (Raven class battleship, Vexor class cruiser, etc.)
My ship, a Raven, is now officially titled the CSV Warsun BBM-01.
This is just something for roleplaying purposes. It also helps me to believe that my ship has a live crew on it.

that number could be how many you've lost+1 ;) Makes more sense really, since I highly doubt there will be higher tech lvls in ships then just 1 and 2, and maybe 3 someday.

Hmm, I don't think it's wise to show your ship class on the scanner... but if you are roleplaying caldari navy it's a nice idea.

No it wouldn't it would be CSV Colussus CAF-03 ( You are caldari aren't you? ) Or is that not the point, would be double race designations when you do it like you do it.
My mains deimos would be named something along the lines of GFV Hellhound CAI-04

Oh hey I like that! In that case, my ship would still be BBM-01. Let's hope it doesn't become BBM-02.

Your shiptype is already displayed on the scanner, and if you dont know what class any ship is from its name, you shouldnt be using the scanner.
Also, whats the point in putting both the "CSV" and "M" bit in - you can't get an amarr vehicle with gallente power, so its more unnecessary info. ---:::---

What about faction ships, they are mixed race, so maby a bhaalgorn has minmitar propulsion and vice versa

I guess I hadn't thought about that. You're right. If power types are race-specific, adding that bit into the designation would be unnecessary.

They all have the primary race's propulsion, ie. the one you'd expect from the ship model:
Bhaalgorn has Fusion (amarr) Machariel has Plasma (minmatar) Nightmare has Fusion Vindicator has Ion (Gallente) Rattlesnake has Magpulse (Caldari)

Edited by: Galdeef Enronobi on 11/01/2006 17:01:36 I actually quite like this idea, i always struggle to think of interesting names for my ships (am currently naming after characters/items in the Aurian series of books by Maggie Furey).
This just add's another little bit of interest to the ships, and if you rp and only fly your race of ships, it gives a bit of continuity to the names of the ships
(might adopt roman numerals for the last bit - number of ships lost)
Current ship would be AEV Chienarrath BBF-I

Edited by: Gabriel Karade on 11/01/2006 17:24:36 I use the prefix GFS - Gallente Federation Ship, though GFV sounds catchy too. So instead of GFS Deaths Head;
GFV Deaths Head BBI-01
and GFV Stormhawk BBI-01
Hmm...interesting
Question is would you have a different designation for a Navy version?

Great idea. I currently use RL designations and try to match most closely to the ship type (e.g., Osprey is classed as a dredge), but yours is much better. Only problem is the relatively limited character length for name strings.

Its an interesting idea. However, what about those of us who roleplay expatriates? If my Matari is also a Federation citizen would his Slasher then be GFV Liberator FLP-01? I'm assuming the flag is more important then the build (assuming we could fly a flag, of course).

Nicely done.
It's pretty much what I use though I put things in the same order as the U.S. Navy. What can I say, American bias. I also prefer to use S for ship rather than V for vessel.
So my Ferox would be
BC 90 CSS Chaffee.
Being an expatriate I have dropped the CSS and may add GFS as I've been working exclusively for the Gallente Federation or ISS for independent.
I'd also add N after the ship type for Navy versions so a Navy Raven might be
BBN 72 CSS Startide.
I just use a random hull number or one inspired by its namesake (like the DDG 90 USS Chaffee) though it might be amusing to see people trying to go for accurate numbers.

Only problem with CSS is that in modern nomenclature it identifies your ships as Confederate States Ship IIRC. Don't know if anyone cares, just thought I'll point it out.

Edit: Did you actually mean to do the 'power' designation off the propulsion type or the powerplant?. Because in theory it should be Amarr-Antimatter, Gallente-Fusion, Minmatar-Nuclear, Caldari-Graviton
You could add an N into the ownership title (CSNV or CSVN) to show navy. You could even come up with your own ownership ticker, like say from your corp. My thoughts were that the race that built the ship had it's own ticker in front. The ticker wasn't dependant on what race you were.
As for the power plant, thanks for the update there. My thoughts on that were that if older US carriers were designated CV-##, and then CVN-## for nuclear versions, I could incorporate this same concept into EVE designations. But, like someone pointed out, since power plants are race-specific anyway, adding it to the designation is unnecessary.
(btw, using V instead of S in ownership was just because I thought the term "vessel" was more appropriate for a space game. The original S which stood for "ship" was based on the fact that they all were in water on earth)

The OP was great, except I agree with the idea of removing propulsion type from the designation...kind lost interest after a few more posts, just wanted to mention that I think the "GS Eviscerator" just rocks. "GS" is "Gilead Ship", "Eviscerator" is my Moa that I don't really use anymore. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk
