You're going to have to be a bit more specific than that. |

Which one strikes the best balance between DPS & Tank.
Which one is overrall the best one to fight others in? "Man, you aren't actually trying to do this, right? Nobody is that stupid right?"

The Maelstrom, definitely. It can tank like a brick and deal massive damage too. IIRC, with both drugs and heat you can both deal and take 1k+ DPS

There is no answer to this question. If there was an answer to this question, then everyone would be flying the same thing - which DOES happen occasionally (Because of Falcon, Because of Nano, Because of Sensor Damps, Because of etc...) |

Tempest:
- Pros: 2 gun-free "utility highs" allow you to fit things like energy neutralizers for close range brawling. DPS skill-bonus allows you to pump out good DPS with only 6 guns. High speed - much higher than the Maelstrom. - Cons: Lower absolute DPS than the Maelstrom Lack of tank.
Maelstrom:
- Pros: Holishit tank. 8 turret highs = impresive DPS. - Cons: Low speed - especially with below fitting issues. Difficult to get a well-rounded fit, especially for lower-skilled players - i.e., an X-Large shield booster and boost amps leaves you little room in the 6 mids for resistance mods, a cap injector, AND a prop mod.
Anyhow, there you go. In short, tempest is more flexible, but Maelstrom is incredibly proaficient at specific tasks. |

Tempest for generally use.
It can snipe, it can nano, and it can neut.....
The Mael is more commonly used in alpha fleets because a group of maels can pretty much alpha things into sparklies with pods jumping out of them.
However, for all its goodness, its SLOW, I mean real slow and it turns like a brick, so GTFO is out of the question.
The Phoon and Tempest have none of that issue I think Typhoon is actually the fastest Tech 1 Battleship and and the record of the Nano-Pest is well documented. For pure snipe detail the Pest is a little better with its dual turret bonus, but it can't take nearly the beating a Mael can if they start shooting back. |

Nobody has mentioned the fact that the Maelstrom is bonus'ed for Active Shield tanking. Generally speaking Active Shield tanking is not a good thing for PvP due to the likelihood of meeting opponents with neuts. I guess it is situational and depended on the support available both for you and your opponent. But I consider the Maelstrom is more for your PvE mission runner. The Tempest is more commonly used in PvP.
As for the large Alpha fleets someone has mentioned, the tank is largely irrelevant in such fleets and the extra DPS bonus on the Tempest, almost negates the 2 extra guns on the Maelstrom. However, once you get to that stage, it really is a choice for the FC / CEO who will recommend which ships you should fly. I assume the OP is looking for advice concerning smaller gang, even solo ad-hoc warfare. |

^^ pretty much that. Each ship has it's pros & cons & depends on what type of PvP fight you encounter.
Also, depends on trained skills to what you can fit & how much experience you have flying them.
Personally, I wouldn't go with either!! I'd have to say the Phoon is probably the more versatile Minny BS. There are so many ways to fit one & they can truly dish out the dps in the right hands & fit a pretty decent tank.
But again, all situational. close range fit is gonna be useless if you come across a sniping gang, same as a snipe fit is pretty much useless if you jump into a close range gang.
Best to take a couple of dice, roll them.. and see what comes up |
