Here's my other draft
I'm sorry I didn't post it this morning with the other. I started this morning but took a break. Everything except your portrait is made from scratch. So here goes, hope you like it!
Note: At first background was blue, but blue is normally better use for industrial sigs and red looked better with your theme, which is contraband/mercenary/gambler... well, your usual mob.

The choice between these is getting increasingly difficult to make and some are not final versions yet.
If you get the time, maybe some of you could explain how you have created some of the effects. I tried making a sig in Paint Shop Pro, but I didn't do very well.

It helped me out a lot in the first years. Photoshop is your friend... Paint Shop Pro isn't even near as powerful as Photoshop when it comes to infography. Unfortunately, it is quite expansive :(
Most lightning effects are rendered through filters, which photoshop has in many and various categories. Hue/Saturation changes to apply colors, playing with layer effects/opacity are the basics.
Have a look at the tutorial site I gave you, it will help:)

yea i wouldn't go with paint shop pro it kind of a cheap knock off as i've been told i'd try and lay ur hands on a copy of photoshop cs2 9.0 like i use

Thanks Halada, that's useful info and a great link.
I am used to creating simple textures for 3D models, having been heavily involved with modding several popular games like Morrowind and Rome: Total War. PSP works quite well for that purpose, but it falls down when you try to produce high quality, presentational images. Perhaps it's time I graduated to Photoshop.
