If CCP call a battleship BS, its BS, simple as that.
Dont make yourself look stupid by trying to add your stupid army/navy terms, we dont care.
You could always petition them
And no its not the real world and warp drive does not exist.

Well.
I am a more informed person because of this thread. I never knew about these terms before. Anyhow... I have only one question.
What would you call a Raven then? Since it is a missile battleship, would it be a BBG ?

As politically incorrect as this is.
BS will still represent Battleship BB will still represent Blackbird.
Those are the common abbreviations for these ships in the game, remember this is a game, so use the game terms. Getting all anal about incorrect abbreviations is just lame. If you cannot accept this then you lack the ability to adapt to change, meaning you will also die in combat.

this post is mainly a re-hash of other peoples points, but i'd just like to show that i agree.
1) We are not at sea (or see) and we are not the navy. 2) This is a GAME and so if i wanted i could call a battleship %/18hE0:@ and be correct- i'll just claim thats the translation into anchient Minmatar dialect. 3) CCP refered to it as BS, and it makes more sense. 4)The blackbird needs to use BB (and technically has more right to it) 5) This is possibly the worst way i have spent a sunday evening in my life

A lot of games do follow the US Navy terminology, even space games. One good example is the Starfleet Command series, which uses BB for battleship.
I don't really like to use BS for battleship because BS is also a popular acronym which stands for b*u*l*l*s*h*i*t.

How very good for starfleet command then. Highly irrelevant in this matter. What they do is their problem, not our's or CCP's.
I'll just state what others have said, I didn't know that a BB was a battleship (after a lot of thought I concluded that is was a typo for BS, since that seemed to be the topic in the sentences.) until quite recently. It seemed very illogical.
Someone said every nation uses these acronyms, too bad but you're wrong. In my language there isn't a single B in the word for Battleship, thus no BB acronym, as simple as that.
Last, why did I ever spent 2 min to type this up? Hell if I know.. I'm gonna keep using BS for Battleship and BB for Blackbird since this is the most obvious for those not very knowledgable with the american way. -------------------------------------------------------------- My opinions are my own and not those of my corp
I don't suffer from insanity, I revel in it. If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be research. |

Basically i am no navy guy, but it simply feels right to say BB to a Batlleship, cause calling it a BS is just plain BS.
Same way Frigs go as FF and Detsroyers are DD.

Quote: Edited by: Nephlite on 23/08/2003 17:51:48 You should use the navy term because Eve uses terminology from the navy. They call them Battleships and Frigates and etc no? Not "Big ship with big guns," "Space doomship," "Dragon of death class attack ship" and etc. Where does the term "Battleship" and etc come from? You guessed it, the navy!
Thus if its established that Eve follows navy terminology, its not too far fetched to follow the navy abrivations.
Basically anybody arguing otherwise is saying "I'm too simple minded to think outside of using B and S because its in the name."
In my corp a blackbird is "bb" and Battleship is "BB."
Where can I get one of those Dragon of Death Class Attack Ships? lol j/k

Well you are flying in ships right? or do you fly cars? Well since it is ships you are in one or another type of Navy, hence the designations of battleships etc, BB for battleships, CA/CL for Cruiser/Light Cruiser etc all navies use these designations. If you dont like the "Navy" land on a planet and join the Army

How do you expect all of us to know that CA stands for Cruisers, BB for Batleships, seriously...
Bring me a list of acronyms and I'll be happy to learn it, I still have a brain. An EVE list of course, I don't want to fill my head with all the junk from the navy. I'm not a village people.

Nobody force you use BB,but the original poster tried to force everybody use BS......LOL I use BS in game, but I know BB is the correct term for ENTIRE WORLD, NOT JUST U.S.

What is the point in trying to change from
BS ->BB (Battleship) BB ->bb (Blackbird)
That just makes things more confusing, as you have some people calling Battleships BS and some BB, and quite a lot of people will think you mean a blackbird and wonder what all the fuss is about... ("Blackbird? I don't see any bla-")

Well, to those that did not know, you are now informed to Naval Ship designations. To those people who use them, forget about them and adapt to the game's terminology, creates less headaches for all concerned.

EVE is a game that is based on a made up future of our civilization and all the terms and names in EVE are in english. In english BB is the term used for Battleship. You are all free to call it BS if you want and I even do it myself sometimes BUT I for one think it's a bit odd as BS in my vocabulary stands for B**ls*it. If oyu want something shorter for Blackbird use bbird or soemthing like that. I don't go around calling Megathron MT or Apocalypse AC. ------------------ NoctoZ Black Reign Curse Alliance |

you must not be from the U.S.? , AND!! if you knew the meaning of RPG then you would know that the "stupid Army/Navy terms" are better "role playing game "(RPG) TERMS than the TERMS that you and anyone else who feels the same way you do are better. And ya this is "Just A Game" But! if you can't play it right then you shouldn't play it at all AND never insult the ARMY or NAVY who has probably fought for your country. ------------------------------------------------ A Plague is comming.... |

Now if you look close, youll see that if you enter the right words in the first sentence, especially whith the second time BSis used, the quote becomes quite misleading. So yes, if Battlesips are called BS, its plain BS. I have to agree with that.
Plus BBs/DDs/FFs/CAs/CLs have been around so long, basically you will have heard them once you read or watch any space opera.

Honestly. You boys and your army games. So if I don't call an inGAME battleship a bb, I should stop playing the GAME? You boys make me smile. And I don't think anyone was insulting anybody's army or navy, they were just insulting all the little boys that want to pretend they're soldiers ------------------------------------------------------------

So, out of convenice for some we should all ignore the long standing realworld designations for ship classes?
How about from now on we stop refering to the "cooling ability" of air conditioners with that silly BTU? From now on we'll say an air conditioner is rated in CC (cooling capacity). I don't care about you silly folk and your BTU.... *I* think CC makes more sense. When I go shopping for a new air conditioner I'll insist the salesperson tells me how good it is by giving me it's CC, whilst I stubbornly refuse to use the proper term.

omfg...I thought this thread was over and done with. Will you stubborn people ever learn? In EVE, yes EVE, the term for Battleship is BS, BB for Blackbird. Your stubborness does no good. People will ALWAYS and CONTINUE to use BS for Battleship, BB for Blackbird in this game no matter what. NO ONE in their right mind is going to sit down and learn the terms, CA CL BB bla bla just so you can flaunt your almighty navy boy experience. No one gives a rats ass give it up, please. I will say again, this is how it works in the game, either adapt or prepare to sound like an idiot and have people have a hard time understanding you ingame.
Thats just like me walking up to an Admiral, nice BS you got there. How many hi slots does it have? Of course his response would be what the **** are you on about? Its called adapting, if I'm talking to a real life navy admiral, I will use BB for battleship, so vice versa in game you will use BS for battleship.

The RL naval ship class designations are in so many wargames (sea and space) they are common knowledge for any wargame aficionado. In RPG circles the knowledge is less common. Of course, threads like this and the sheer "in" factor of the system may make it popular enough in EVE as to push the BS people into the "laughed-at" minority. Who knows? Imagine the argument over either Stabber is a CL and Rupture a CA or Stabber is a CA and Rupture is the BC. So what is an Osprey? Hah hah the madness never stops.
Some more designations: CVA - Heavy Carrier CVS - Strike Carrier
Some SFB designations: BCH - Heavy Battlecruiser BCS - Battle Control Ship (BCH w/ fighters and BTs, maybe Thorax?) SCS - Space Control Ship (CVA w/ BTs)
Clash of wargame vs RPG in EVE. Which faction will prevail? Wait and see.
