Greetings. This is a serious post.
This is not a rant and it has a rather long introduction, to give you a context of what the frell i am talking about.
I know there are a lot of you out there, complaining about what they believe is the direction CCP is heading with the game. I've seen the threads and i've posted in them, too.
Now ... you may know me, or you may not, that's pretty much not relevant, but i want to add that in my years playing EvE, i have learned *a lot* about how peoples minds work.
Although i consider myself to be a solo player, 95% of my time i seek interaction with others. This includes ganking as much as talking in local and several chatrooms at once. I have no friends and need to compensate for that fact. Or something.
I have learned how information spreads and how to exploit specific human characteristica to my advantage, in regards to how information spreads and how this information gets altered on it's way, even by the first messenger.
I have learned that pushing specific buttons in people leads to specific, consequential behaviour, by chance, but definitely when the specific button triggers an emotional (bodily) response.
Many of you actually know what i'm talking about.
It's when you interact with somebody (even a carebear) and trigger adrenaline in him, completely altering his mind and thus his reality. (hi dave ^_^)
This works with noobs for recruitment purposes, for example. You all know (or don't) about those who blow up noobs to recruit them. These are different than those who blow noobs up for laughter. They just do what i've described above.
And of course, even if they don't know about this human mechanic, they exploit it.
So ... thanks for reading ... now the point.
You're all idiots. *lol* (i mean this in a nice, laughing way. really. i can point at myself with this, too!) Except the devs, for obvious reasons.
You guys complain about the direction the game might be heading. Highsec safer blabla, pvp free zones balbla, pay2win blabla, wow in space BLAAAAA, etc etc etc.
No, this won't be going into the direction of gankers or alts or whatever.
I can tell you *for sure* that you're exactly getting what you are afraid of is going to happen *and* i can tell you the very reason *why* it *will* happen, unless we stop the process ourselves.
We can ! Well ... we could. I personally can't, because i can't pull it off on my own.
People like TEST or the goons could do it much better and once it became standard, it'll be more easy for everybody to do it. I'm also sure there are lots of people out there who are perfectly suited for this kind of thing. Sadly, i am not.
So ... as the effect of my weed slowly volatilises ...
What am i actually talking about ?
I'm talking about New Players (tm). I'm talking about the *fact* that it's the New Players that shape the future game.
I'm also talking about the *fact* that A LOT of New Players start their game through mining or running missions and then sticking to it, because that's the first thing they've done.
There is no argument of "Let him do what he wants do to" here, because he has no idea what he could do!
To change the direction of the game, we have to be actively involved in starter corps and play with noobs the way they should be, instead of running missions or mining.
As example of what I've done: (yes, i've done my share :p)
Those noobs who joined me on ganking roams as scanners/looters needed SP of less than a single day. They learned more about the game in an hour than mining or running missions could teach them in a month, including situational awareness, predicting distances, reactivity and others.
It was hard work for them, but even a 30 Million ISK gank gave them the feeling they've achieved something and actually worked for it.
(the money of these ganks went to the these guys, depending on their age/experience)
Then there was this carebear corp i wardecced. I had a talk with their CEO and encouraged him to talk to his people about it and actually try and fight. We had a lot of fun and i even got fanmails! :D
The whole point i'm trying to make is that, if you keep letting carebears help new players take first steps into the game ("go mining", "run missions", "avoid lowsec", etc.), then
YOU WILL GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE AFRAID OF !
I call out Tippia (as trustworthy source) to confirm that there are indeed carebears in starter corps ... ... ruining the new players right from the get-go ... ... which she, quite fittingly, called "griefers".
1407 Characters remaining. :)
I can't even imagine the responses to this, if anybody actually read through it. (hahahahaha XD) I've come to realise that it's totally irrelevant what the public says or doesn't, as long as i have tried. I am trying ... and i predict failure, but that's not only my fault then.
The are the wrong people influencing new players. I've seen massive carebear noob corps, made by noobs, pretending to teach others. I've seen Pro Synergy ... a huge corp full of noobs who want to make money by salvaging/looting missions. (legally)
I see corps pretending to teach others, totally ignoring any aspects of ship combat or anything related to PvP, besides the market.
Anyhow ... to come to an end.
I have tried. I can only do so much. Those who i have influenced, i have influenced in a way the (still) majority of EvE players would approve of. Everybody else can be found complaining about it in this very thread. :)
If you want to shape the game, start a war about new players.
You might win the game. :) |

tl;dr First impressions are important. If New Players sole first experience is mining and/or mission running then they will be carebears for life. There are experienced carebears in newbie corps that reinforce this first impression and thus are bad people for disincentivizing newbies from playing EVE as a PvP game. CCP needs better control of their New Player experience.

The direction that CCP is going with the game doesn't concern me nearly as much as the direction the Players are going with the Player Driven Content.
The major issues in the game are caused by the Player base. Most games of this sort have a foundation struggle of "Good vs Evil", but the players have drifted so far into the "Immoral" direction that it's like playing a game of "Bad Pirate vs Worse Pirate" and the "Good Guys" are all but defenseless. Personally I call it the "Grand Theft Auto" mentality.
It is destructive, childish, and will eventually destroy the game for many people.

So you basically just said you want EVE to be more Good VS Evil like all these other games you mentioned.
Sure, lets destroy EVEs uniqueness! That always works well for niche games! |

Actually, EVE has a balance.
There need to be players like him that think the game is too evil.
Otherwise you wouldnt have people to harvest good tears from at your end of the spectrum.
One group of people tugging for a more safer and friendlier game and the other side tugging for a more free and harsher game is exactly what keeps the game in its current ballance.
And both sides will always say that the game is tugging in the opposite direction they want. ;) |

there are plenty of players drawn to eve by the ganking, and there are always questions in rookie help about being the bad guy.
Pro-Synergy is, in my opinion, a good way for newbies (and some alts of bitter vets that I know of) to get isk fairly fast while learning other things.
You are omitting one thing in your analysis, you need there to be a steady supply of carebears, otherwise you will end up ganking other gankers who will gank you back and then who would get the salvage and stuff to build your ships to throw at concord? |

Nothing. As soon as others realise that there are no miners left, they will create mining alts, to mine.
No ?

Folks who come to EVE for PvP will try to Level V as many PvP skills as possible, and it takes years.
Folks who come to EVE for PvE, Mining, and Manufacturing will try to Level V as many of those relevant skills as possible.
Only after almost 4 years of SP Training would I now be adequately trained myself to show new players all sides of all aspects of the game.
But now I'm too busy in game to even want to bother 'showing newbies all of EVE'. There just isn't going to be that many qualified players to do this kind of thing.
Give the new players some credit for making their own decisions about how to play this game.
It's always been the way it is, and there is absolutely no shortage of any kind of playstyle within EVE. At all.
There is no 'problem' here.

I spent a good part of the game being the "good guys" living in high sec mining and doing missions; not because it was enjoyable but because it's all I knew. I hated missioning and i refuse to do it now. Fact, I was about to quite the game if it wasnt for the pirate life. So, if anything, I think this is a good realm to focus on, and not a realm that will cause destruction, nor is it childish.
nobody makes the "good guys" go to lowsec and get stuck in a battle of "bad pirate v. worse pirate". |

Protip. Next time you decide to write your dissertation, please take time to re-read to ensure it doesn't end up as a long pile of verbal diarrhea (which it did).
I'd say the vast majority of new players start with mining and missions to make their initial isk. Mining is a safe way to make some isk while in your first few weeks and your combat skills suck. Doing so does not commit you to a carebear life. |

It's also right that mining is a safe way to make isk, if you don't really care about making a lot of it, but that's okay, as the new player doesn't actually know or care anyway.
Thus he just keeps mining, instead of doing any other thing he could do, but he simply doesn't know about, because he gets told to mine or run missions.
I never said that doing so commits to a carebear life per se, but i am pointing out said carebear influence in the new player corps and that new players can be shaped in a way that ends this once and for all. |

Nice read, although I have to say, you are not the first to come up with this point.
It's quite obvious that newbies are the future of eve, and it infuriates me every time our vets cry about CCP dumbing down eve and only catering to newbies. Although Eve has an exceptionally high player retention, players do quit, and without newbies will slowly bled to death.
That being said, I agree that a certain kind of highsec indy corps are the cancer that is killing Eve. All those CEOs that tell their newbies to dock during wardecs or even impose hefty fees for pvp ship losses, since they look bad on the killboard- those guys are a direct threat to the future existence of this game.
Considering this, it comes to no big surprise that many (most?) of the more successful Alliances recruit their players from out of game communities. While this might be perfectly fine for the newbies for said alliances, it puts the non-affiliated eve beginners even more at a disadvantage, since they will most likely be recruited by one of those carebear highsec indy corps and may quit the game frustrated without even having realized for a minute what this game could have offered them besides boring mining OPs.
For a long time, I believed that wardeccing those corps and trying to eliminate them as quickly as possible would help the situation, but I fear that it is just driving away the unlucky newbies trapped inside even faster.
So what can be done? Don't expect the players to change, people are people, they will not change. Some random ideas: -CCP could remove all ore belts from highsec (maybe except for Veldspar), so even beginner indy corps would be forced to move to lowsec or null and adopt a less risk averse playstyle. -Starter regions could be designed as single system highsec islands surrounded by lowsec. -The scanning tutorial could let the newbie find his first wormhole and offer WH missions for a smoother transition into W space.
Just think of how bad an average post by me is, and then realize half of them are even worse |

Why ?
You come up with this crap *CCP could do*, although the issue has *nothing* to do with CCP !
Nothing !
It's a purely player-driven issue ! |

Mining is a safe way to make some isk while in your first few weeks and your combat skills suck. Doing so does not commit you to a carebear life. You may as well be right, that the vast majority is doing it.
<-- point, over there.
The main point is this hasn't changed. When i started I mined. Probably people who started 5-10 years ago started out in their first weeks doing some mining. This isn't anything new. And today as well as back then some went down path a, others down path b, yet others down path c.

You have no idea.
It's a player-driven issue, solvable by player interaction and not by changing the game. That won't solve anything at all, because the influence at the human level remains.
When was the last time you rolled a new char and tried playing with new people ?

But, on top of everything else going on for experienced players, who has the time to make this a focus ?

That's my point. It's all one massive cycle of people who are bad at the game teaching other people to be even worse at the game.
As a result, the quality of the average highsec player is pretty low unless by some chance he gets fed up and decides to go do something else besides what he's been told to do. And people think nullsec inhabitants are mindless...

I try. This character is a member of what is probably the best "highsec" corp that is out there right now.
We do whatever we want. We run lowsec roams(will full T1 reimbursement) once a day at least, we have our own wormhole, we mine, mission, trade, to our heart's content. About the only thing we don't do is hold sov. Our alliance leader does a lot of this out of his own pocket as far as I can tell, and he is a ****ing saint for it.
And I personally try to help people whenever I can. Even my ganker/scammer/griefer alts will happily give fitting or skill training advice.
But I don't do it for a bad attitude. "Y you attack my ship!? this hisec, you cheater!" is swiftly met with both mockery, and being watchlisted so I can continue future tear extraction. Not posting on my main, and loving it.-á Because free speech.-á |

Sorry try again.
From your OP, if I can summarize from the Title, is that this game is heading in some direction. And in your opinion it is a bad direction.
My counterpoint is that your initial assertion is false. The game is essentially in a very similar place now that it has been. This place is largely a healthy one if you take the slow stead growth eve has had over the last 10 years. |

I just reactivated my account. Have never really gotten past mining and tutorial in this game. Got blown up yesterday trying to travel to a station to clear it of stuff I left there. It pissed me off, set me back and all that good stuff. I play multiplayer games to PvP and have played most.
Strangely I keep coming back to this game...I am still lost as to how the heck I can make enough isk, how to pvp or what I am doing. I do feel what the OP is getting at. For 2 days I have been mining, have about 30 million isk and one tackler slasher with what I could afford to setup...no clue how to use it (1 million SP that is mostly in frigates). Joined RvB (Blue team). Too noobish and uneducated in the game to get out there (afraid of all the flaming that will commence when I do). "working on it"
This game is not new user friendly. Truly doesn't feel that social compared to other games I have played. I like the harshness of it, but combined with its complexity has me at somewhat of a loss. I don't mind losing stuff or dying...I just want someone to kill and friends to do it with. The game would be much better if it asked you what you wanted to do at the beginning and when I clicked on PvP/Pirate/Rapist...it automatically joined me with friendly people to give me direction to do it with. Maybe even gave me some piece of crap ship and told me how to use it (tackler, dps or whatever yall call it). Otherwise I am going to keep on mining and losing ships unaware as to what to do to progress and benefit myself.
Instead of mining I should probably do missions and "ratting?" Seems like that would benefit me more in the direction of PvP. I guess my focus is on ISK first and than waste it later (might just buy PLEX since I have a good job and 2-4 hours a night available to play). I hope this re-affirms the OP in why this game falls short for new players. Most will point the finger at me, no worries I already have done that and am looking into how to get balls deep. |

Try facwar, cheap to get into. Plenty of corps recruiting. Plenty of fleets open to the public. Make money while shooting other people. All while developing a desirable skillset (both in terms of player skill and SP).
Lowsec/Nullsec exploration isn't bad either. Cloaking/probing skills are quite useful for everyone really. Developing the know how to scan effectivley, bypass gatecamps, and scouting can make you useful to any 0.0 entity. And you'll make reasonable money.
Or join an npc 0.0/sov corp. There are dozens if not hundreds recruting on these forums at this very moment. Choose one that fits your style. Hop on voice coms and get involved. 2-4 hours a night of activity is plenty for most places. |

The OP is correct. I have seen this myself over the years.
Still, it's rather hard to get noobs to do anything. They got their noses deep into the tutorials, which is OK I guess, seeing that anybody who asks anything is going to be told "do the tutorial!".
I've considered dropping back into noob NPC corp to see if I can help. Last time I was in NPC corp, two corpies were close to a ragequit for being ganked in Parts. I convinced them to fleet up with me and attack the people who ganked them. We were up against heavy hitters and lost, but they had a good time and didn't ragequit. One even went to a nullsec alliance later on.
It can be tedious. Perhaps it's up to the bittervets to decide that they have enough ISK and promote the game in the manner that the OP suggests?

LOL Honestly, many facwar corps have programs that offer free t1 fit frigs/destroyers to their newer members. Fleets are always available, so join one and get a share of the plex rewards. Or run plex's solo, they're not exactly hard. And fac war plexing pays out way more than mining.

And I'm sure it's what keeps the carebears here, too. Sadly, I have to be in agreement that some of the direction this game is headed is indeed a direct result of the poison that is poured into the new player's ear.
A couple of folks have mentioned the new player experience, and how CCP should do something with it. This game has a completely adequate one; it uses the mission system to teach you the mission system, gives you your first tastes of NPC combat, shows you the possibility of mining and industry, etc. That is all that you can ever ask from a new player experience on behalf of CCP. CCP can't hard code your ability to find friends/fellow players. They cannot patch out all the bad advice and utter bullshit that's passed around by the risk averse.
I'm in total agreement that it's not up to CCP to make sure the game goes the way it's wanted to go; it's up to us to make sure that the new players who remain to be old players understand what is here, who is here, and what they can do with it. I actually don't think it needs a lot of money to help them. It actually needs much more time than money.

LOL Honestly, many facwar corps have programs that offer free t1 fit frigs/destroyers to their newer members. Fleets are always available, so join one and get a share of the plex rewards. Or run plex's solo, they're not exactly hard. And fac war plexing pays out way more than mining. If your fac war experience was ****, maybe the people you flew with were ****? idk.
FW is far less than cheap to get into; you can do it with a day one alt and a unfit frigate. FW doesn't pay you to shoot at people, and you as much as admit it with what you jsut said. It pays you to avoid being shot at while spinning buttons and blitzing missions. It's by far the most obscene and broken isk-transfer mechanism in the game.
It holds mediocre value for new players by giving them a clear-cut intro to PvP, but it tends overall to fail at that, as well. The majority population of FW is alt-farmers.

Aaaahhhh, what a wonderful post ! Thank you ! :D (please note that throwing money at noobs isn't helping them and i doubt that's what you actually meant)(by saying "have enough ISK and promote the game")
Stuff given away for free has a value of 0, meaning that giving noobs stuff does not help them.
What I meant is that veterans should consider that their grinding in markets/belts/missions has already brought in enough ISK and should consider doing something else.
A lot of players are self-centered. I think this has more to do with time than any negative conclusion to be drawn from that. If all a player has is one hour, and it's going to take double that to get a fleet together, then the player is probably just going to run a mission or move a ship while checking contracts and other such matters. Some people can scan well enough to hit a site in one hour too. It's all they have time for.
But even without noobs in the mix, anything other than making some quick ISK faces an almost exponential time increase. If it take say 30 minutes to hit a highsec level 4 mission for an experienced player, but forming a fleet, even with other experienced players, is going to take a factor of that, like 3 hours from form up to roam/mission/gank to logout, the amount of time the player has may well be exceeded. This is particularly the case for many fellows who can't get to their computer till around 10 PM and it seems like the wife and/or kids sense the computer switched on and magically materialize 1 meter away from the right or left shoulder. So we're looking at people who have to be up at say 6AM and *should* already be sleeping at 10PM but are trying at least to make sure the Skill que is not dead and they still know how to undock (hence the calamity caused by moving the undock button).
This is why many of those who want PVP tend to end up hitting a CODX server for some spank and gank instead of logging into Eve. |

A new player in a decent corp can make more money in fac war than anywhere else. A fact supported, no less, by all of the so-called "low-sp farming alts". Likewise, the link I provided shows that fac war is indeed a good place to get pvp, as the sheer level of pvp activity is quite high. So they get pvp experience in addition to isk. Win-win. |

Probably. That's the whole lack of social interaction, right before your very eyes. An attitude like that, coupled with 'come do this, it pays lots!' is exactly what causes people to become risk averse, even in lowsec. Loss hurts, and it should hurt. Being poor hurts, and it should hurt. If you're not scraping by at first, then you never learn the value of everything that there is to be earned in EVE Online.

They should. They should not have it handed to them in PvP FW space at the rate of dozens or hundreds of millions per hour by learning to avoid fights for maximum profit, all in their first week. In the long run I would hope that some means of getting into more emergent play is provided. Indeed they get into missions because they get tutorials on that.
Perhaps it's time for actual PVP missions? Certainly the mechanics of this I would not know how to implement.
But imagine that in order to get past all of the tutorials one must have "The PVP Mission" done?
And, while it might seem particularly cruel, maybe the game would benefit from a gank mission?
My impression is that the game is wide open for PVP and ganking, but there is no direct promotion of it beyond the "Be the Villain" ad campaign. "Be the Villain" so people sign up and..... here's a tutorial for missions. Here's a tutorial for mining.
Look at it this way and what the OP is writing about becomes clear.
I think if CCP added a PVP mission or even a "gank mission" it would make headlines. And why not? It might even encourage new players to avoid doing the one thing that is almost certain to make them averse to PVP.

First of all:
You don't *need* a corp, but *player interaction*. Not saying that a corp is a bad thing, but most people don't actually realise that there's a local chat waiting to be used.
The local chat is the biggest social tool in the game and the number one way to get known and finding friends. Most people just don't use it, for whatever reasons.
If you don't believe me ... Try Osmon, Hek, Dodixie (well ...), Otela ... These systems come to my mind as active systems with active residents.
Ah yes, the residents. I guess that's it. If you stop trying to play a game, and start seeing a world with living people in it, then it might help your problem.
Create your own content. :)

Putting forth the fact that FW space is good for PvP has nothing to do with the fact that joining FW is, at best, only a mediocre gateway to that same PvP. PvP has absolutely nothing to do with the obscene amount of isk that can be made in that space, being as even killing someone's blinged out ship nets you less of a payout than spinning a single Novice plex. The absolute best return for a newbie in FW is to avoid every fight possible, and spin as many plexes as he can. If you run facwar plexes by yourself, that's your choice, and your fault and no one else's. No one can stop you from being anti-social. Fac war links you up with hundreds if not thousands of other players in a common endeavor. You can communicate with people through fac war channels, join a corp, organize, and cooperate. Indeed, doing so is necessary to flip any system.
Even if you avoid every fight that you can avoid, you will gain a better understanding of how pvp and the game as a whole functions due to the pvp in the environment around you. You will be exposed to it one way or the other. No one can avoid pvp forever in lowsec.
Are there areas of eve that are better than fac war? Sure. But it sure as hell beats hisec. You can play missions 100% solo, and never communicate with a single soul. Same for mining. You can't play facwar 100% solo, even if you wanted to. People will find you and try to catch you. If you even remotely try to pvp alongside someone, you will make friends.
And as for noobs making isk, I fundamentally disagree with you that showing noobs a good way to make isk is bad. If you want newer players to suffer and scrape by; that's your own personal problem, don't force it on others. |

(That one thing is to take getting blown up too personally) Why would you want CCP to interfere in a purely player-driven issue ?
I'd think of it as more like kicking the baby bird out of the nest.

If a new player wants to start out mining, I see no problem with that or any direction the game might be headed in.
Because there is a finite number of skills for mining. Plus core skills and drone skills which are usefull for PVP as well. So what I am saying is just because they start out mining does not make them only a miner. In time they will gravitate to other things especially as mining becomes boring.
The main problem is time. Many players do not stay with eve after the first 3 months. And cross training a toon for ganking makes that toon not viable for mining anymore because of sec standings. To go back and forth between ganking and mining with the same toon is not very workable.
The solution is to find a way around this for the new player which does not require investment in another account and one that does not interfere with the training time of the main toon on the account either.
Maybe if CCP can promote dual training an alt on the same account but for only a month or so for a new player. Enough time to get the alt skilled up enough to do a gank. Then the dual training ends. He can continue to mine with his main and run around and gank with his alt when he gets bored. It might keep him/her in the game and he/she might even eventually decide to open a sidekick account and move the alt toon over to the sidekick account to continue to advance in the gank trade on his/her alt.
That might work to CCP's advantage in getting more players to stay with eve longer and get more players to run multiple accounts as well. It would just cost CCP a free month of dual training time on a single acount.
I am thinking outside of the box with this. Most players do not want to be told how to play the game but they do want tips how to improve their game play. I think this could be a win/win for players and CCP alike. |

You're not only off topic, you completely missed the point and came up with solutions somebody else has to pull off, assuming they didn't know their part of the work better anyway.
Furthermore, you are jumping to conclusions with your assumption that new players don't want to be told what to do. I have no idea how you came to that conclusion, though.
I agree that *nobody* wants to be told what to do, but this isn't the case in every single possible situation. :p
If you would roll a noobchar and talk to new players, you'll find lots of people who would be more than happy to know what else they could do than mining or running missions ...
... but they have no idea.
Bringing this information towards them is an actual issue and would demand a whole new thread all for itself ...

OP is off her rocker. People don't PvP becuase no one showed them? hahahaha PvP oriented people will always find PvP, usually rather quickly..even in games not generally PvP, they will find a way. PvE oriented people will always find ways to avoid PvP, quickly or they leave, quickly. Taking a PvE oriented person by the hand to show them PvP does not make them into PvP'ers, it makes them bad PvP'ers who never show up for ops, and log in less and less until they find a less PvP orient game to go play...in other words, they become a growing liabilty to a PvP corp. |

For years I've been in help channel, on different characters, trying to make sure newbies actually get proper advice and facts and much more than anything else it's about showing them they have options other than the obvious pve/grind/terribleness while disproving other's mistaken "advice". Trying to "wake them up" about how most players in this game are bad and how they can avoid becoming like them and how they CAN compete if only they put in the effort to learn. Most just nod, shrug and keep on grinding, only a select few actually benefit from it. Over the years I've had youtube channels with tutorials, ran corps to learn newbies about pvp and "eve proper" but you just can't stop it.
To me the OP is wrong. EVE won't become "X5, the solo grind" because we can't turn around the onslaught of grindbears but because CCP, for years now, has been changing the game to facilitate that kind of mentality, simply because that increases the potential customer pool. Look at all the changes since 2008/2009, it's all there to make stuff easier, more simple and safer. CCP themselves won't state this outright of course as that would alienate their (still) core customers but it's a process that started a few years ago and helped by a painfully obvious lack of game knowledge by many of the DEVs.
Can't stop it but you might slow it down. Me personally I have given up and only play EVE on back burner these days, still in help channel of course but not going out of my way anymore to nurture the "spirit of EVE". |

I am not new. At least, not that much. I've been around quite a while and I've seen a lot of things change since I started back in Red Moon Rising...
Honestly, despite having -years- under my belt I still feel new. I have this massive employment history because I can never find a place. Either the corp is too small and no-one is ever on when I am or the corp is too large and I'm just "another guy". It's even starting to be that way in my current corp and you'd think that'd be pretty hard considering it's primarily a Dust 514 corporation and I'm fighting with those guys -every day-.
But, yanno, that's just how this game is. You're either alone, feeling alone or feeling like you're unimportant. It sucks but it's strangely addictive. Sure, the player interaction is there and all but it's kind of got a War Z (video game, not the movie) feel in that "welp, there's nothing to do and there's no reason to work with anyone else, might as well just kill them all". |

Since this topic is about new players and I feel being one of them I will trough at you my thoughts on the subject. Most new players, my opinion, don't understand in their first week or so that the most important skill you need is: attitude. Everything else is built on that. Is Eve for everybody? No, it isn't. If your landing in Eve doesn't involve some of your friends already playing Eve pushing you to try it, then it's no guaranty that it will be soft. You'll not find many people here to hold your hands in Eve.
However, the fact that one can freely choose the path of his own destruction is the thing I like most about Eve: keep in mind that dying is not the worst thing that can happen to someone. One can try to do almost everything in this game and the fun, at least for me, is there: i.e. the trying part. A piece of advice, good or bad - I let you judge that, for newbies like me: the life of a new player in this game is hard enough due to Eve pretty damn horrible UI, so do yourself a favor and not make it any harder by letting "fear" decide for you.

Honestly?
As being said previously, it's the bitter vets which are scared of pvp that's the problem. I've tried so many times where people get mad at us because we killed them, because people expect 'fair' pvp in eve. It's not a coding issue, it's not a new player issue, it's a bitter vet issue.
Most HS corps just straight out decide to not login or not undock at all during a wardec... and there's plenty of people in those corps that want to fight, they're just not allowed to try because their CEO is a huge carebear vet.
You'd also be surprised about how many of those corps the CEO smack talks the living crap out of you (or in other eve terms... tears), while station tanking.
There's a ton of options for people to engage in pvp in this game, they just never really got the tools, their CEO is a douche that loves PVE, or they consider it too early in their gameplay.
One of my directors got a friend of him to play eve, he joined us from day one and flew around with us and had tons of fun.
TLDR: Bittervet carebears is the problem not the new players. :p |

Here's my 2ct on a few topics raised in this thread:
On carebears: Many posts here mention GǣcarebearsGǥ and usually do so in a negative connotation. It's a term typically meant derogatory and applied by the PvP crowd to those players who prefer PvE, cooperative gameplay and consensual PvP (if they want to PvP at all). One player in this thread posted that he believed (to be exact: used to believe) that wardeccing GǣcarebearGǥ corps and trying to eliminate them as quickly as possible was a good idea. I didn't quote him here because I believe many people in this game share that opinion. But in effect this means that you want the GǣcarebearGǥ crowd to change their ways of playing this game and play it the way you think is fun GǪ or to not play at all.
The lesson learned for new players is, that either you play the way some vet players try to force upon you or be constantly harassed until you quit. New players who started this game as a GÇ£carebearGÇ¥ GÇô and from my experience with many other MMOGs I believe there's at least 2 or 3 GÇ£carebearsGÇ¥ for every GÇ£PvPerGÇ¥ out there - often do not even get the chance to learn enough to start trying PvP on their own accord.
On the newbie experience: Some posts here are about GÇ£first impressionsGÇ¥ of the game and in part about the question why so many quit this game so soon.
Let me try to recall some of my own newbie experience. The very first time I tried EvE GÇô many years ago GÇô I remember that I needed to mine and do missions for 1 or 2 weeks before I was able to afford a cruiser and put some mods on it. I really wanted to try PvP and joined an open fleet that was about to go on a roam. Unfortunately for me they decided that they needed some target practice first GǪ and chose my cruiser as a target. Lessons learned: people are scum, never trust anyone in this game, don't join people you don't know, a cruiser dies in 2 seconds if you are unprepared for combat. Another two weeks later I could afford another cruiser. This time I tried to explore low sec alone GǪ unfortunately I jumped into a gate camp. Lessons learned: a cruiser dies in under 5 seconds even if you manage to get the mods online, it takes two weeks of boring grind to afford something that you will lose in PvP in 5 seconds. I quit EvE soon after. (Sure, today I'm much deeper into the game and know that some of those GÇ£lessonsGÇ¥ were GǪ not quite correct. But we are talking about the newbie experience here.)
Fast forward a few years and here I am GÇô out to give EvE another try. So much has changed. I played a while with the avatar creator, even launched a capsule or two and finally decide to keep one character and start playing the tutorial. Got stuck in one of the very first missions (I switched from captains quarters to station view on an earlier toon GÇô this caused my new character to start in station view and because of that I missed the first (or first and second?) tutorial mission that gave a certain skillbook you needed to train to complete a later tutorial mission). Asked in the help channel (and yes, I was polite, specific and behaved well). Got ignored at first (maybe no one knew how to help me). A couple of minutes later (I checked every container I had) I asked again and got told how stupid I was for not even being able to complete a tutorial mission (and I'm told nowadays you get a bounty on you for even saying GÇ£helloGÇ¥ in the help channel). In the end I figured it out myself when I created a second trial account and noticed that the tutorial had a different beginning. Lesson learned: don't ask for help GÇô you will only get smack talk.
Day two. I have finished most of the tutorial missions and am a proud owner of a Cormorant now. I'm still in the starter system and notice a signal on my ship scanner. There's a pirate base in the system (it was a Guristas Refuge). So I take my deadly Cormorant to kill some pirates. I jump to that base GǪ and am vaporized almost instantly. Drat. I notice almost all the mods are in the wreck so I decide to try and get it. I still have the Kestrel I got from the tutorial. Bad idea. Lesson learned, outch.
Now I was almost broke. Needed a way to make isk. Obviously combat was out of the question at the moment. So I sold everything I still had and mined a bit in my newbie frigate with the civilian mining laser it came with. Finally I was able to afford a new Cormorant. Fitted it with several civilian mining lasers (I noticed that you always got a new newbie ship if you dock at a station that has no ships in the ship bay). And I started mining to get back on my feet. Didn't take long and some player in a Cormorant tried to persuade me to take from his container so we could legally do PvP. GÇ£Hey, PvP is fun.GÇ¥ He even offered to pay me 1M isk in case I lost. Yeah, PvP is fun. Especially if your target is in a Cormorant that is obviously fitted with several mining lasers. Because mining lasers are a weapon of choice in PvP, aren't they? When I didn't take from his can he started to yellow box me and told me that he would kill me now anyway. Not sure if he meant it since I got away before he was able to lock me (aligned to station while we were talking). Lessons learned: People are out there to get you. If you give them a chance to kill you, they will kill you.
So I started a mining career. Not exactly by choice, but by necessity (as I perceived it at that time). And I'm not sure I would still play the game if I hadn't found better ways to make isk and some people to play with now and then (who live in a different timezone and rarely do stuff where I can attend ).

I think of this game as the spectral containment field from Ghostbusters.
If it shuts down, all these aspergian basement dwellers unleashed on the other MMOs all at once would be "a disaster of biblical proportions".
They are fun to play with at least. I still got chat logs of rage just from denying them a killmail through subterfuge and lies.

Interesting thoughts, although i'm not always sure about topic relation, but that could be me and the language barrier.
Please note that topics like wardecs etc aren't actually on topic.
What i'm trying to say is that if there is something you have ongoing issues with, and if you come up with this here, it might not actually be related to the topic at all.

I'm sorry, but i can't make up my mind what your point is.
The " EVE won't become "X5, the solo grind" because " seems very contradicting to "because we can't turn around the onslaught of grindbears", which seems to get supported by "because CCP, for years now, has been changing the game to facilitate that kind of mentality".
Edit: Also, as the new players shape the future of the game, through the new players, the future of the game can be shaped. Very deep. *cough*
CCP would actually *stop* trying gathering grindbears (as you call them), if the opposing player base keeps increasing. |

Not read all the posts on here but have read some. There is a clear problem with keeping new players in EVE - even if the people have friends in the game. There are rules put in place by CCP to stop certain aspects going too far (such as harassing people in order to make them quit the game), but whether CCP act on these rules or not is another matter.... still see a lot of people doing it in game with no action taken against them.
Everyone learns from war aspects of the game, there are some decent corps out there willing to teach new players but there are also some real douche bags out there who think they are in charge of the game and get away with LOADS of rule breaking without CCP even batting an eye lid. |

I simply can't stand people who think they know better than others what is good for them. Your purpose is not to show the new players all what they can do in EVE : Your purpose is to "teach" them that the way you play is the only true/good one.
I prefer much more this way to help the new players : http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/ |

Not saying that it's the only thing or that it's a big scale thing. I have noticed it a lot over the past few months of playing, there are a handful of complete douche bags who think they can control how new players play because they have more SP / knowledge and if new player views differ to theirs they constantly harass those players in game instead of helping them = loads of new players turned away from the game from the start. I would think it would be more in CCP's interest to look at things like this.
Also the whole PvE thing, ye a lot of new players do PvE to make ISK as they can make a hell of a lot from it; people should be free to pick what they want to do in game from the start / train for however long they think it takes to get into other aspects of the game. Biggest problem with EVE is you have to focus on one thing at the start.. skill building for PvE / Mining / PvP is completely different. You get people saying they want PvP but only ever target non-pvpers then moan on the forum that they didn't get any action, as soon as they get action from proper PvP corps they moan too.
It's funny actually because those that moan about PvE corps not fighting them during wars are always the same people that flame other proper corps that war them; how is it any different to what they are actually doing? |

If you see it, petition it. If CCP don't know they're being broken, how can they enforce them?
You may well find that what you see as rule breaking is actually legitimate gameplay, as defined by CCP. As an example; people still think that others invading "their" deadspace areas, salvaging and looting "their" wrecks etc is against the rules, despite numerous CCP employees saying otherwise. Personally I think that specific aspects of the game need to be focused on what you want to do. Yes you can train a lot of stuff straight off to level 3 pretty quickly - but main things for aspects like PvP are only viable through skill trees: like defense, there is more than 1 way to go for defense based on ships etc.. which it takes time to open those skills through the skill trees.
Someone who is wanting to do mining isn't necessarily going to train defense / weapons as they will focus on mining aspects.. which imo is the reason why people have alts. Another example being alt scanners for pvp players. People chose what they want to do and focus on what things will get them to their maximum ability of doing those things.
The only viable way of being able to do everything in eve or eve multiple things in eve is to buy a character that has the relevant SP. When I started I knew what I was going to focus because I played for 21 days just exploring all the in game options. |

Well, if you want the two cents of a noob... Here it comes;
I started playing a month ago after trying Dust. Liked CCPs ideas but didn't like their delivery indust so I decided to give Eve a shot.
That being said Eve was an easier transition for me than most. The skill gap is still very daunting to me and yes I have read and understand that a new can go fly a frigate and tackle right away.
Why I didn't take that route;
I didn't want pushed into being a specialized tackler by a vet over more important more broad skill trains.
We are broke and need money, tackling for a small unexperienced group doesn't sound like a windfall of isk
We are broke and can't affourd to lose our ships and or get scammed.
So, I have decided to carebear until I am satified with my skill tree, and have enough isk that I will be capable and comfortable with losing a ship.

I thought of a tree structure from reading that. Programmers use tree structures a lot - even upside down ones because they are twisted souls - If skills are like the leaves of a tree, and the certificate system comprise the branches, we are still missing a root.
(we skip the trunk entirely because, we can)
So some people say "I'm a PVPer" and other say "I'm a miner" and those would comprise the roots but in some way that is so intangible that new users find they are in a haze about it.
Now, I know where this could lead. "Let's add that root node as a pathway".
and.....
People will complain about that because they don't want to go up against people who decided on PVP early and trained properly from the start. It might cause someone not to get an All High and Holy Killmail and we don't want that, do we?
But it would help new players avoid something that a previous poster pointed out.
And that something is, having to rely on other players for something and then getting smack-talked pointlessly, called a noob, and have a bounty slapped on them.
All because someone somewhere is in their darkened bedroom angry at the world over something.
Now you see, smack and ball-breaking is fun. But initially, and for no reason whatsoever, it's dumb. And just sharing in any experience and crossing paths with these failed alpha peronalities (they'd be out being pickup artists or young entrepreneurs of their parents didn't put them on Ritalin 10 years too early) is enough to make people decide this:
"I'm better than this crap".
Usually followed by "I'm outta here".
Of course, the kind of people I'm thinking of, who are driving off new players for no reason, THEIR game is, for THEM, driving people away. It's not about spaceships with this crowd, or anything. This could be about flinging boogers for all it matters. So they would say "good! Eve is not for you!" But it's not about really playing a game, is them not wanting to spend their free time babysitting these wonderful people who lacked beatings in their youth.
Therefore, and against the howls of those who confuse "sandbox" with "litterbox", I think minimizing the amount of interaction that new players have to deal with other players should be taken into consideration.
Such would be the case with everything that a new player needs to learn, even how to use the skill que along the lines of their intended goals. Yes, I know some people might lose a killmail because someone else missed a tanking skill, but we might as well shoot baby ducks and call that hunting too if this is going to be the case.
So any means of getting ship handling experience and knowledge to new players, without them having to even cross paths with the Litterbox Patrol, would be better off in the long run.

The solution is yours to craft That's perfectly fine logic, if you ignore that you could easily gank a hauler or two (you said "we" so i assume you're a group) and make much more money in much less time, while having fun too.
I know, i keep coming up with this example ... mostly because it's a valid one. ^_^
I wonder if people deliberately ignore this, get false information about it, (people telling you it's not worth it) or you simply did not have the idea.
And you're not even restricted to haulers...

I feel like going to low sec or null sec waiting to kill "haulers" would, for me lead to a few undesired results.
First one would be me a new player waiting for something possibly not comming during my log on time. With waiting comes a slope in the isk per hour, which i have very little of.
Second would be to get ganked anyway, nevermind how bountyless or fruitless kiling me would be.
And when I say we, I mean me and my one friend that started this adventure together. And have have poked aroumd for pvp corps but seems most are looking for 10 mil sp toons or are just not that serious. So my time spent right away in high sec is to build up sp and after some time will atleast have the sp to be taken seriously by a decent pvp corp. Whether this goal holds or I just stay in Highsec is a question you will have to ask me in 3 to 6 months.
This is just my take on the game. I am having decent fun in highsec for now, with a goal to have the skills and be scooped up by a pvp corp willing to guide me in the right direction.
Hope this answered your question. |

Not only did i never mention lowsec, it's impossible for the target "not to come", because i never said you'd be sitting around, waiting for something like most people do. Which is sad, but their issue.
It only needs two for a successfull ganking roam. one takes a properly fitted thrasher or rupture/vexor and the other sits in a magnate fitted for 1600m-¦ cargospace, ship- and cargoscanning. then you go on a roam, scanning everything that might be interesting.
You'll learn more by doing this in an hour than you will learn doing missions for a week. You have to figure out everything on your own and it's seriously satisfying to succeed in it.
Hell .. why are so many of you so horrendously uncreative and boring ... ... and at the same time ignorant, too. (this might not actually adress you personally)

You are correct, I am completely ignorant. That being said one of the funnest things with playing this game is learning it. That being said I do alot of research on line and I find more stories of people creating tears of unsuspecting pilots than I see of The Diary of an average Joe Pilot. I am carefull when flying my ship around and I keep an eye on the sec status of everywhere I fly. You do bring up some good point and perhaps I am missing out on a great part of the game.
Do you have some advice for me?
I am specing into caldari rails/blasters cormorant, ferox, or rokh ( which I don't want to fly quite yet with) for ganking haulers?
Sorry for the over use of " That being said" .. but i am to lazy to edit on my phone. |

The problems with that are that it takes two toons to pull this off. And one of them in high sec is going to get negative sec standing. A new player has no idea what that means to him. It will limit what he can do with that toon in high sec.
Second problem is after a few days his friend can not log on. His support guy with the good high sec standing. His go for guy. He soon learns that in order to be self dependant he needs another account one that can be his go for toon with good sec standing.
None of this is a problem if he was planning on more than one account anyway. But if he was not and you lead him down a path he was not prepared for or led to options he did not want to give up then you did him a disservice.
In eve the question is always do not lose what you can not afford to fly.
A player needs a source of income and ganks can be that source but do not work for a single toon doing that for a source of income. They will end up having more than one toon. Is that a big deal? Ask the new guy if it is, do not assume. |

Do you have some advice for me?

You believe isolating them even more from the others helps them in any way. Your post starts with something pointing out exactly one of the issues the game has. People play this game in roles. CCP acknowledged that fact by removing tiers and giving each ship a role. People have ganking alts, exploration alts, trading alts, industrial alts, scamming alts, they even have neutral alts ... They pretty much fragment their in-game personality to a level that they don't have their own anymore. As opposed to people like me who do not play with alts, because it ruins certain aspects of the experience. It's a playstyle so common, it's seen as natural in EvE and many will that it's a necessity to play that way, which is completely ridiculous to assume. I forgot my point. I need sleep. ^_^
Interesting points nonetheless. Especially about fragmenting. Makes me think.

The biggest "newbie issues" this game has come from the fact that people poorly adapted to its world are clustered around the areas new players begin in. You don't really see a nomadic nullsec pvp group in hisec. You don't really see lowsec pirates in hisec. Most people surrounding the starting areas are carebears that will tell you "don't think about getting into pvp without at least a year worth of training under your belt. Till then run missions and stuff. And watch for gankers/loot ninjas, they're the scum of the universe."
Adorable newbies are exposed to carebearism before they can experience the game. They're taught it's always a mindless grind of pve/mining/whatever in chase of an invisible carrot while avoiding the dreaded bad guys (gankers/hisec 'deccers.)
They're taught those people are "bad" and that being "good guys" they can't fight back, they should just dock and wait out the wardec. Or just outright quit. That alone removes the wonder of this game as a journey - you set your own goal and pick your own way to achieve it.
To think about it, how come so many 'pirate hunters' fail at their task? Being blown up early by pirates and laughed at is one thing, but the very same thing happens to other pirates or nullsec people. Thing is, mayhem-minded players are told by their friends that they should fly cheap stuff, smacktalk the idiots back and keep dying till you get good enough to stop. The other side often tells a rookie "pirates are jerks, don't fight them you won't win anyway".
I'm sure nobody would mind a corporation of pirate-hunting pilots roaming lowsec in search for blinky reds. After all, conflict brings content. (Bonus points if said hunter corp has something to do with ninjas. Pirates vs. Ninjas, battle of the century!)
I suppose it would be a good idea to offer a real way into lowsec for some people. A part of the tutorial that would introduce them to the lifestyle and pvp aspect. Maybe a choice during the ending of your tutorial arc where you can decide to work with the local pirate faction and start a mini epic arc that takes you on a dangerous journey to lowsec - with guidance from a fellow pirate via popup messages.
Navy rat gatecamps to teach you how to survive a gatecamp (or just show you: this is a gatecamp. It will happen on your way many times.). Ending it with a "test of faith" to kill your former mission agent that told you to shoot the pirates, culminating in a pvp-like fight (dumb AI, just make him orbit - but use player-grade numbers for tank/dps along with ewar often seen in pvp). Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet? |

why? we see them: - killing miners - killing freighters and industrials - killing ratters - suspect baiting in trade hubs killing newbees - shiptosting in local and forums "waaaa, high-sec pubbies, n00bs, idiots, carebears" - recruit scamming (well known goons recruit scam) - what did i miss?
=== Most people surrounding the starting areas are carebears that will tell you "don't think about getting into pvp without at least a year worth of training under your belt. Till then run missions and stuff. And watch for gankers/loot ninjas, they're the scum of the universe." === can't disagree about "scum of the universe"
=== They're taught those people are "bad" and that being "good guys" they can't fight back, they should just dock and wait out the wardec. === when i was first time baited and lost my shiny Myrmidon to "help me to test my tank" what do you think i ended up learning to myself? Exactly! That i should evade guys like these. It was natural result of analysing the situation. And who should i blame? CCP? Maybe mythical carebears (at that time i was alone exploring Eve universe)? Or myself? Nope. Result is simple: they were bad guys. And until i have ideas what to do with them i will "dock and wait out the wardec". Yes, there was another way: spend my time, effort and money to get even. But it's the game i pay for with MY money and i don't want to waste it to get revenge from some useless players who hurt me once.
=== That alone removes the wonder of this game as a journey - you set your own goal and pick your own way to achieve it. === you are wrong here. Well, you can be right if "your own goal" is only "kill everyone in straight ship to ship pvp".
=== To think about it, how come so many 'pirate hunters' fail at their task? === because pirate hunting was never worth time and effort?
=== Being blown up early by pirates and laughed at is one thing, but the very same thing happens to other pirates or nullsec people. === the difference is: "other pirates or nullsec people" made their choice - they have chosen to live in places where ship to ship pvp is the main thing (or one of main things). High-sec people live there because ship to ship pvp is not main thing here. It IS present but it's not main thing. Different people, different play styles, different places to play.
=== Thing is, mayhem-minded players are told by their friends that they should fly cheap stuff, smacktalk the idiots back and keep dying till you get good enough to stop. The other side often tells a rookie "pirates are jerks, don't fight them you won't win anyway". === what if direct ship to ship pvp is not interesting to you? How it can help you to get fun to repeat it again and again? Don't reduce Eve Online to simple shooter in space.
=== I'm sure nobody would mind a corporation of pirate-hunting pilots roaming lowsec in search for blinky reds. After all, conflict brings content. (Bonus points if said hunter corp has something to do with ninjas. Pirates vs. Ninjas, battle of the century!) === Sounds great. But again: who will spend their time and effort to pirate hunting? If you are pvp-minded person you already pirate or in 0.0/WH.

You see more carebear pirate corps in high sec than anywhere else, because they are protected and only ever target new players and miners as others have said... tell them to go to low sec / null sec and they won't... Give them a run for their money when they war you, they run to other high sec mercs for defence or start crying that their ships were blown up. Funny thing is these people think they can tell people how to play and force one way of play on others, then go around claiming they are great pvpers when all their killboards state are miner kills.
EVE is as much about standing with other players as it is about standing with NPC corps, if you join a high sec pirate group from the start you are limiting yourself even more for what you can do in the future of the game and you have to rely on others even more so, you will also be stuck in high sec, because all those people you annoyed in your pirate group will kill you the second you enter low sec. |

Blondie Rhoads wrote:You are correct, I am completely ignorant. Do you have some advice for me? Yes !
First of all, i'm sorry to inform you that your choices of ships to use doesn't really help you along the way.
On the upside, as you have already skilled turret-related skills, it's not that bad.
You can easily gank an untanked hauler in a thrasher. Now, i have no idea about your skills, so you might actually want to use a cruiser instead. I know that this bumps your investment to around 15-20mill isk, but it's well worth it.
Bonus points if you can use a Vexor, because it seriously dishes out a lot of damage.
If you want to go cheaper, i have a 2-3mill thrasher fitting which is perfect for ganking small stuff and haulers anywhere below 0.8 at gates or stations. You probably won't have the skills, so we would have to go through this manually, via mail.
I await your response. |

It seemed so natural, backed up by the bullshit new-player-argument of having them learn to ropes safely blabla, that it completely slipped my mind.

If there was a lowsec new player area, older lowsec players would actually try to gather new players.
Of course, now all the morons will scream up, because that'll mean (in their minds) that we'll lose all new players, because they'll all just kept getting killed by wankers...
... which displays a percetly ignorable opinion.
Thank you for your great post. It's not full of "advices" what CCP should do and it's not full of typical hatred ...
Additionally i want to point out, that you have shown that there is an actual evidence (ingame) that there is a inbalance in regards to the choice of playstyles of new players. (i hope that made sense for you)

I think the 'problem' you see is a mirage and an illusion of your own creation.
Example:
I'm one of those Newbies.
I've always been an FPS type of gamer, though I also love the Command and Conquer and Total War series, and even tried RuneScape for a while in middle school. I like and appreciate VARIETY.
I was originally drawn to EvE because of an article in BBC that I saw. It was something about a 4000+ player battle. I'd never truly tried an MMO before (let alone pay money past the initial purchase price of a game), but i figured "What the hell, I could get into that!' and found myself a 21 day trial.
Now I've been playing EvE for the better side of 2 months, including the trial. When I first started playing, I did ALL the tutorials. I talked to a LOT of people in local and corp chat. I also READ about the many facets of EvE on sites like evewiki and evelopedia.
I was already interested in the PvP sector of EvE, so I admit, I was a bit biased to head in that direction. Shortly after learning the basics, I decided the industrial life and shooting asteriods was dull. But I did TRY it first.
Recently, I packed up and moved into a cozy little LowSec System with a PvP Corp/Alliance, and have been merrily roaming around and making things explode (when I can, other times I explode).
Anyways, NOWHERE along this journey so far has anybody told me "HEY NEWBIE! You need to mine and research and be safe and never ever go to a system below 0.5! One does not simply venture into Null!"
The only advise I have ever received or read has been that which I pursued.
Point here being:
I made my own choice, just like every other player has and will.
No 'Conspiracy of the Carebears' will change that. "There is no good and evil. There is only power, and those too weak to seek it." |

I have always been very supportive of new players- whether it be helpful guidance, a bit of isk, or invitation to join corp. The problem is they are often very needy (in terms of individual hand holding) and often have unrealistic expectations. The biggest issue is that so many expect to be able to plex their account within about a month or they plan on quitting. Even for those that achieve that goal, they spend the vast majority of their isk just to continue playing and are back at square one the next month.
So, I think the first solution is to set proper expectations. A new player should expect to pay monthly for some period of time, or commit to prepaying for a few months.
Secondly, I feel it is important to give the new person a broad overview of the various activities in Eve as well as a general idea of what the landscape looks like. Too many suggestions to new players are biased towards the bitter vet's personal experiences. I prefer to simply state the facts and let the player make up his own mind. Most importantly, I suggest they try a bit of everything if they wish, ss long as if they choose mining that they are Code compliant. I always tell them to go lose some ships and have fun.
I avoid giving much guidance on ship fittings and skill plans. I personally think that people should do these things on their own mostly versus blindly following prescribed actions. There is a general lack of creativity in ship fittings in Eve, which comes from both general "best practices" that turn into gospel, and top down fleet doctrines in null sec that always makes you feel like two armies of red coats facing off against one another. Of course there are laughably terrible fits that die everyday, but I personally believe that players should experiment and have fun. For skills, I'll generally suggest that unless they already know exactly what they want to do, they should do a bit of everything until they find their path. Sure, the character might not be as valuable later, but the point is creating your own character on your own, with all of the experience of what they felt they did right and what they did wrong. "Optimal" characters can be made later.
What can we specifically do?
There are 2 things mainly.
1. Promote the game outside of game. Talk about it with friends. Talk about it at work. Hell, blog about it. Talk about the endless possibilities and help guide them if they are interested before some bittervet warps their thinking.
2. Build a corp that is noob friendly. There are 2 main types of corps that I feel perform this function the best. One is the jack-of-all-trades corp. Do a little bit of everything with the new players. Show them the possibilities. Refer them to friends for specific activities. Make sure that even if they go to another corp that they can find a place that is a good fit for them. The other type is the corp with a cause. This can also just be a group of players. For instance, the New Order is very noob friendly. Lots of new players find that they enjoy carrying out the executions of miners who violate the Code. Belligerent Undesirables is another great group of guys that is very noob friendly.
The most important thing we can all do is help new players find a suitable corp or group of friends. Introducing them to a cause within the game such as the New Order helps a great deal as well.
