So, I'm not very up-to-date when it comes to games I have a hard time finding much interest most of the time then I do and kinda cloister myself into it
I've started with Counterstrike back in 1999, then moved to Tribes 2 where I had a lot of fun for a good year, fiddled with various solo games like Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Oni, Unreal, UT, then had a few years break. When I eventually invested again in a gaming-capable rig, I started playing a bit of Crysis, Portal, Mirror Edge, but for the most, these are rather short and kind of lack replayability. On the other hand, I've spent countless hours in Dragon Age 1, Mass Effect 1&2 but slowly lost it when Bioware released DA2, then ME3. Along those, I have spent hours on EVE, enjoyed Deus Ex HR, Fallout NV, I tried TES Oblivion but never really made it past the tutorials.
I kinda feel like I need something else on the side and tried various other MMOs without really finding a really good one.
I kind of liked Path of Exile (it's silly but whacking monsters by the dozens is utterly satisfying), it's free and can be played without being forced into the build of the month and only doing the same combo ever but now I know you have to replay the game 3 times to reach the end pretty much killed the interest for me. In a rather similar way, I tried SWTOR, Aion, but they seem to pretty much promote build of the month and combo spam, which I know will completely kill my interest in less than a week.
So here I am, not really sure what to look at, it feels like most games are either combo/build and most of the time Hero-Fi, or lack a very deep universe and make you go through the same things multiple time just nudging the difficulty up, wich doesn't really renew the interest for me. A good while ago, I remember a video I saw on youtube, some sort of wicked Hero-Fi game, the player completed a quest and got rewarded with a foursome, I didn't note the name at the time, but the nasty or wicked humour can be a selling point too.
So here's the question: What games would you suggest? (I hate asking for it, but when I browse steam store or websites, the videos and screenshots really don't depict the games correctly for my taste) "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

That's a problem with broad tastes, I've found interesting action-rpgs, well made FPS, stimulating strategy games, thrilling stealth games, I have loved medieval-fantasy games and sci-fi games. The MMOs I tried usually ended up unplayable if you don't follow some specific builds or turned into a pure grind fest. Many solo-games have a short life-span because they lack depth or have been rushed out and lack replayability. "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

Dark Souls did catch my interest a while back, then I forgot about it, will have a look at it again. Dota didn't on the other hand, I'll have to check out the others.
I came across Outlast some time ago, seems like an interesting one too. "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

Have you tried Kindoms of Amalur: Reckoning? I found it a decent length play. with decent replayability.
Also I would recommend the elder scrolls series. The tutorials put alot of people off, it did me at first. But those games have amazing depth, and are modable for extra playability. |

I will try the demo of Kingdoms of Amalur, hadn't spotted it. With TES, it's a frustrating story somehow, I tried many times and always failed to build a character that can actually do something. I know that properly chosing main and secondary skills is a key point of the game, but I somehow fail everytime. I said I never made it past the tutorials, but it's pretty close, since it never took me very long after it to start struggling from a bad choice in my builds, so it sits there, in my library and looks at me weird. Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls) is definitely worth taking a look at. Having beaten both games I can tell you it's one of those games that give you a good challenge and it feels very rewarding when you finally manage to crawl to the end.
I haven't played the PC version and I've heard the controls are a bit funny on PC, so if you have access to a ps3 you might want to play the ps3 version instead.
Another good and quite obvious game at the moment is Grand Theft Auto V. It's really well made in every way, the story and characters are well written and the whole thing is just extremely fun. |

The Elder Scrolls 1-5 Crusader Kings II
TES are kind of sandboxy and offer a reasonable amount of replayability There is a lot of Lore and ingame history to find and discover.
CK2 is a nice but slow paced game, and it can get tricky balancing Empire building/maintaining with your Dynasty success. There is also a Game of Thrones mod for it too .. |

Since you liked DA:O, maybe you'd also like to go with something older, a favorite of mine: Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic (part1). Not the MMO; the single player RP game. Like DA:O, this game lives by its very lively and often funny characters, it has a very good story that will keep you interested much longer than the stupid powercreep. And it has an amazing plot twist, I admit I did not see it coming and it made me sh*t bricks. Just think of how bad an average post by me is, and then realize half of them are even worse |

Ok, so I tried Kingdoms of Amalur, pretty and interesting piece of game. Didn't have the time to try Warframe yet, but it looks interesting too.
While playing Amalur though, I had a thought: is there similar games (I already have Mass Effect) but with a different background than medieval-fantasy? maybe more modern or even sci-fi, not that I hate it, but there's so many games with swords, bows and staves, could be nice to see something different.
Regarding KOTOR, I have the 2 and the whole Jedi Academy collection, but the graphic engines are really old and running them in 800x600 fullscreen on a 22" 16:10 panel is quite tedious. Is there a trick for that? "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

It's from the days when Bioware was at its peak of storytelling. Sadly, those days are now long lost, like tears in the rain. |

For MMO, I recommend The Secret World, although I am not a fan of the MMO part of it, it is well worth playing the story through. |

The latest Tomb Raider was just awesome. I believe they did an amazing job of creating a very believable and relateable set of characters -- absolutely fantastic job with Lara. Good story with a pretty good control and camera system. Beautifully done world.
Shadowrun Returns is also a pretty enjoyable way to pass the time. This one is a bit of a throwback to turn based combat and click-to-move days that pays homage to the table top game world. The main story is fun though player generated content can also be enjoyable.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is another turn based game that someone else mentioned that I'd also suggest. Along with the turn based strategy combat, you have research and item/facility build options as you progress through the game.
I had a lot of fun with Dishonored and I'd recommend that if you like the sneaky assassin type games.

Scary..i was about to suggest these two games my self
Like with Rhivre i also prefer The Witcher 1, great game, a lot of fun, interesting story and nice for that "break" when you dont want to play with others.
The Secret World is well worth giving a try. The story is really interesting, the quests can make you either laugh your head off, or want to throw the computer out the window. The game it self is very dark, not "everyone is happy and everything is great",and because of the skill wheel you dont have to start a new character if you want to try a different combat style. Being a former WOW player im fed up with instances and raids my self, but i play it for the story and quests. You will also find quite a few EVE players there
Two more i will add, but they are both older games.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (yes, the third one, not 4-6 ). This is a game that has kept me returning to it for..gah..10 years or so. Its nice when you just want to kill a couple of hours, and not looking for something that really occupies your time. Turn based strategy game and you cant be picky about the old graphics
The Thief series. Good story, and the gameplay really..draws you in. To the point that if someone talks to you, you whisper a response without thinking about it, and leaning around corners you lean over in real life And of course, its also refreshing to be "the bad guy" for once instead of the "hero" which you are in most games
Edit. If you have a taste for the more..unusual kind of games that makes you go "wtf.." Alice, madness returns is puurrrrfect Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

yeah TSW is quite a good game the freeform progression system is kinda ok
there are places where it's extremely atmospheric e.g.
theres a minor quest line to investigate a certain house .. then the quest updates to "Investigate the cellar" and I'm sat in my chair thinking ... but I don't want to go down there, bad stuff always happens in cellars!!
I can only think of one other game that has made me feel anything which was Homeworld when you return to a burning world .. awesome choice of music for that |

Skyrim - Mods, enough said. Brilliant modding community, and it has been taken down a notch from TESIV:O with a more streamlined leveling, crafting, and combat system.
State Of Decay - Some may say a DayZ ripoff, but a damn good one. Persistent world, with things happening, and resources being used...even while the game is not being played. Do not make the mistake of going 2 weeks without playing, lol. Also has perma-death, with you jumping into the role of a fellow survivor. Not sure if it is fully cross platform, though, and is not multiplayer.
DayZ - For many of the reasons from above, with the added excitement of MP.
Fallout 3 - My personal favorite game of all time (aside from EvE, but apples and oranges.) A real wasteland, compared to FO:NV, and again, some great mods out there.
Borderlands 2 - A hell of a loot-driven grind fest. Great story, and a couple really great DLC's. Co-op. Tight and precise shooting, an all-around awesome experience.
Bioshock Infinite - My game of the year.
GTA V - My game of the generation.
Those are my picks...enjoy. Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the comedian is the only thing that makes sense. |

I was always a sucker for strategy games. Especially Command & Conquer. I've replayed and beaten them games so many times, even years on I'm still addicted! If you've got a similar taste, maybe Civilization V is for you. I've not played it yet, but it's been suggested to me. I played the original Civilization many years ago but I've no idea what the more recent ones are like.
Besides that, I'm pretty out-of-touch with the "latest and greatest" too, if I'm honest. Sorry I can't offer any more input than that.
Good luck on your endeavour! :) |
