We have 4 sorts of players.
N00bs: Those are new to game, they dont know what to do and they test their options. It¦s unknow how they will continue and wich ther group they will join later.
0.0 folks: These people accepted the game in "hard" mode. Like Vietkong has these modes: easy, medium, hard, Vietnam, EVE has these options too: High sec, low sec, 0.0 and to be -10.0 (wich makes you vulnerable to any attacker - everywhere). The 0.0 people accept the full risk and the full options EVE offer. For example bubbles, capital ships, unrestricted aggression. 0.0 folks are "better" EVE players.
Long time carebears: These people play in easy mode. They want to make ISK and they want to make ISK easy. If something is hard, they open a topic and cry until CCP helps them. From time to time they go to low sec or even 0.0 and get killed by people that are 0.0 veterans or pirates and then they open a topic about how lame, how stupid or how childish the aggressors are. Some of them are simply ISK sellers, probably unemployed in RL and earning some $ with selling ISK on ebay. Ebay is full of offers - FULL. Others are simply not interested in the challange to fight other players. The PVE features already make their little heart beat faster. Something a PVPer cannot unerstand, but yes: these people exist! 0.0 folks often group into big crowed alliances to simplyfy their defences and "claim an area".
Pirates: These people choose the ultrahard gamestyle. With being -10.0 they arent allowed in the 0.5+ sandbox anymore (to use Viceroys words). They want to do PVP only and are mostly totally uninterested in any PVE activity. Any other player can attack them everywhere - no concord and no sentry guns will help. They do PVP and PVD (player vs DEVs) at the same time, because with each patch they have to adapt to the lastest pirate nerfs. They are very few and in small gangs. They use the option to be the aggressor and to have the advantadge of the surprise everytime to compensate the handicaps like being -10.0 or not being able to make ISK with easy PVE.
Sometimes i think that these player types don¦t fit to each other - yes, they simply don¦t fit. For me EVE is a wargame. When i undock, i am at war with 100.000 other players. An empire carebear cannot understand this. He just wants to leave his RL for 3-4 hours and be a "big trader" or "wants to have billions of ISK" or have a chat with some people because he is alone in RL. The challange of fighting other players means nothing for such a player.
But in the end, these different player types fit to each other - somehow. A combatfree EVE would instantly die. If ISK come to the players for free and without risk, then the game would be boring - even for pure PVE-players. The PVE-elements can never be enough to make a player stay in EVE for ever.
Nicely put, but I think the majority of the players are somewhere in the grey area between.
