4 fully fitted battleships destroyed in the last week!
All because they accidently shot me or sent the wrong drone at me or smartbombed too close or something really minor.
ALL of them would have been avoided by the following very simple, fully effective solution.
In options create a new option "Enable damage from gang members" unticked by default, a big warning all over it if you want, but we need the option.
When this option is ticked gang members show up with the normal purple square in overview but now with a gree tick box in the corner. When it is not ticked a red cross in the corner.
This avoids any traps, greifing ect.
PLEASE CCP! for the sake of my friends who keep losing ships for minor mistakes!

Shooting people that aren't in your corp triggers CONCORD responses in 0.5 and up and criminally flags you in 0.4 to 0.1.

You want ccp to adjust the Game just because your Friends cant avoid making "minor Mistakes" ? My corp fight loads of empire wars and the only time one of us got concord ganked was because of a bugged overview, when a nuteral showed up as red just as a war target warped off.
There is a reason they are called Smart Bombs, because u have to be Smart to use them... I see Nothing wrong with the way things are, why should someone Not take dmg just because he is in your gang? If anything, i would like the Option to Remove Nuterals for the Overview.

there is a crime warning - they would actually have to click through this to shoot you. i've run missions with people both inside my corp, and outside it: on occaisions i've been shot by corp members, but i have NEVER been shot by someone outside the corp - the crimewarning stops that

Edited by: eLLioTT wave on 22/01/2006 08:56:02 Two examples,
1. Recently a friend was providing minor logistics while i was tanking. During a moment of lag he accidently fired a gun instead of the remote repairer. Insta concorded.
2. Yesterday while assisting a corp do a mission they smartbombed while i was still in range, again, insta concorded. However it was their tank that smartbombed and consequently all the NPCs agrod onto the sniper BS who didnt make it out in time.
---
Of course these mistakes are the fault of the people using the SB / logistics and having not thought it through. However, where is the harm in an option to enable damage from gang members? It would just add an extra layer of protection.
It is a very minor thing, could be done in a hotfix one DT.
This would also allow people in NPC corps to practice pvp on each other without have to steal cans.

It WOULD be nice to be able to allow gang on gang fire.
Damage is enabled already
But it should NOT be allowed as the default. It would ruin the possibility of forming new aquaintances, by joining up with people you don't know.
An option to allow it would be excellent. (But saying its just a small DT fix is quite presumptious)

both of these have a warning. it goes something like this:
1. "click yes to this box and you will die. we suggest you click no" 2. "click yes to this box and you may die. we suggest you click no"

Yeah yeah, it's a game, but if you can't control when and where you shoot, you'd be better off flying a transport ship filled with quafe or m8ining in 1.0

EDIT: I can think of a griefing tactic allready. Get a lot of friends, camp a gate with smartbombs, filling the area with instadeath.

Thank you for all the replies, especially Wrangler, it is good to see the feedback.
Embattle, I help out multiple corps wherever possible. It wasn't the same corp that had the problem but 4 different corps of varying experience.
HippoKing, That is true but unfortunately a lot of these people have turned that warning off. Like i said previously i know it's their fault they got concorded, all i'm asking for is an option to disable concords involvement in "accidents".
Mrs IHateYourGuts, Valid point and if you re read my first post i suggested to have the option disabled by default with a big warning so that new players do not untick it unknowingly and open themselves to greifer exploits.
Corp Scammer, I like my corp, i have lots of friends here, i know a lot of other corps and enjoy being able to go on ops with all of them withotu worrying about politics at this stage of the game (is that okay?)
Sheriff Jones, "Yes. Add the little button so you get even less realism in this." realism? hello! we warp through planets!
I dont understand what you mean by your suggested greifing exploit, can you please explain? For what you suggested to work (people camping a gate with smart bombs) they would have to be out of SB range of the gate and any concord ships, be in the same gang as EVERYONE passing through, AND make sure everyone passing through has the option enabled. If one person who didn't have the option ticked or wasn't in their gang went through the gate they would all get concorded like normal.
Koori, yeah... really constructive... ill try to keep it in mind.
Sorry for the long post, i wanted to be thorough and try to address everyones concerns. |

LOL - classic!
If you saw the big "Would you like to be forcibly removed from your ship?" message and clicked "Yes", then I don't see what the problem is.
Either get everyone you're with in the same corp, or do whatever you you're doing in low sec/0.0. It'll lead to a lot more newbie griefing if you can shoot at gang members. Even more than the can flagging does now....

If someone is silly enough to gang with people they don't with the option enabled then of course they can expect problems.
The can flagging technique is already being used by members in different corps to allow consensual pvp, why not make it easier and just join a gang and enable damage from the gang? |

How about we leave it as is.
If you really feel that you might just randomly shoot someone halfway through a mission you should probably stay at home.
There is no reason what so ever to disable dmg within a gang. If however something really was to be done, simply removing the criminal flagging (as player corps do now) while ganged, would suffice.
Oh and for the record, doing the same thing to npc corps would be ******* priceless. Please CCP remove the crim flagging from npc corps, we wont abuse it, honestly.

Not really.
I left the warning on for a long time, but it happend that i was just a little to late with warpjamming someone because of that warning.

I think this is a pretty sweet .
It can't cause any harm other than to very stupid players, who would be in dire need a good lesson in any case, and it adds more options for those players that want them. So I don't see what all the anti-whining is about really.
Only thing is, I can't see this making it high onto CCP's list of immediate priorities. Then again, that list seems fairly arbtrary at times so who knows?

It would be a really nice idea to click on and off for alliance tournaments and training. It would have the same consequences as AFK travel with "prefer shorter" vs. "prefer safer"
it would have a few of the low brow players a lil cranky for a while but if you can train monkeys to fly... i think the benefits and usefulness of such an option outweigh the dangers. ___________________________

Thanks for the positive responses.
Do you think it would be best implemented as an option in settings (like auto target back:) or as a dialog that appears each time? for example when you receive a gang invite there is an option to allow damage or not.
Also do you like the idea of a small green tick for gang members who are enabled and a small red cross for ones who aren't? |

I meant as a tickbox on the gang invite window. You know? the one that already pops up when you get invited to gang. eg "Varone has invited you to join a gang" above yes or no options have a tick box "allow damage from gang" or something like that |

IMHO COncord should respond proportionately according to the severity of the actions, Not killing you till you've killed a ship, but first fining you(10k isk for every point of damage done) and then jamming you and finally destroying you if you destroy another ship.

No its not a good idea...really it aint. SB's should not be used in empire/gang/or corp ops. Logistics ships should'nt have guns, thats not their job.
And if you and your buddies were in the same corp, well concord would of laughed like the rest of us, and not spanked ya.
Why do you want CCP to correct for your buddies inability to fight their ships proper?

I also like your original post Elliot, regarding the gang damage thing. Its a good idea. Aside from the combat aspect, it seems silly to have to use can flagging when you want to test out a setup with someone outside your corp.

It's not the fact that they accidentally hit eachother and get killed that way. It's about accidentally hitting eachother and get ripped by CONCORD, and that's wrong. If you gang-up you should be able to legally hit eachother, no matter what system you're in. (you should be more carefull picking your friends)
So: allow damage from gang-mates option is a good idea.

If everyone doesn't like the idea of allowing friendly fire how about another option, right click the portrit of a targetted ship and an option to define that as a "friendly lock" appeares, when enebled you cannot activate any offensive modules on it, that would work without having to alter the rules of concord

Way back you could shoot gang members but as with most things that are inherently helpful people found a way to exploit it and were using it to kill the not so learned to game mechanics.
I agree with the "limited" Concord response idea I.E. fine for accidently hitting another and total obliteration on ship destruction. As soon as agression happens Concord responds as it does now and if the individual does not stop or has blown up another ship he also gets destroyed.

1) I like the idea in principle. There are lots of situations where shooting gangmates is useful (tournaments and testing being the two already mentioned). And to the person who said go to low sec, that sort of defeats the point as for a tournament you don't want the results being upset by random pirates interferring and for testing the whole point is to work out viable setups to take into low sec.
2) Yes griefing newbies would be possible, but if the option is (a) clearly displayed on the gang invite and (b) off by default then it would have to a complete retard who didn't understand what was going on.
3) The only criticism I have with the original post is the wording. I hope by "turn gang damage on/off" you meant "turn criminal flagging/concord response on/off". You're gang mates should always be able to turn on you but if you haven't consented to waive your police protection then concord should become involved and take them out.
4) The trouble is a gradiated response is that you could easily have a bs group shooting a target and then bring in a frig to make the kill once the bs have taken it down to nothing. The bs live and only the frig dies. The other option is to penalise all involved in a kill if a kill is made. Trouble is you're then back to the original problem. You attack someone by mistake, someone else kills them and you're now an accessory to the crime and killed by concord.

This avoids any traps, greifing ect.
lol... srry, but what happened to a friend of mine is much funnier and more serious than any of this...
he was innocently helping out a gangmember, remote repairing his armor when this gang member decided to activate his sensor dampener on my friend. Causing the bugger who activated the sensor dampener to become criminally flagged in yulai = concordokkened... AND effectively flagging my friend as the criminals "aid"... and getting him concordokkened too!!!
now.. how can the victim also be the criminal?

There is a problem in that if you heal a ship you have to press yes on that message.
If you shield drone someone the warning message pops up about concord. You press yes nothing happens via concord but you shield drones work. Only now the message is deactivated as you pressed yes, so if you hit the wrong button due to lag and active the weapon or muddle up your combat drone target with your shield drone target concord blow you up with no message.

there is no cure for stupidity
even if CCP changes the game mechanic to accomodate to your friends, i am sure they'll find a way around it and die in another stupid way
and yes i've been concordokkened aswell, and it was me being either stupid/drunk or sleep deprived
those 3 still get me killed on a regular basis

That's a top idea. A right-click instalock that only allowed logistics modules to be used on the target.

I feel your pain (and agree whole heartedly with the idea)
We had a gang of three BS and an Ishtar doing an extrav in empire. Ishtar pilot was not in the corp at the time, and one of his drones got within range of the tanking / smartbombing Dom by accident. This in itself would have been bad enough, but the other two BS were remote repping the tank as well.

Hippoking brought up one of the major points i meant to originally.
Even with the warning on (which i dont think ill ever disable just to be safe) you need to press yes to use logistics drones. Whos idea was that?
I know some people are completely calm but when my 300m worth of battleship's tank is under stress on a really tough missions and im having to activate and deactivate different things as well as monitor team mates and repair/sheild them i get really nervous at even the idea of having to say "yes - go ahead and perform this dangerous action" for drones to go and repair someone! What if when later im using my combat drones to finish off the frigs and lag moves one of the friendlies on the overview into the position of a previous rat AFTER ive given the order for drones to engage??
I should lose most of my fittings and an expensive ship because of a tiny bit of lag?? (i haven't done this yet but i can see it happening pretty easy)
Get into a fist fight (skirmish in eve without hull damage) out in public and the police will break it up. They wont send in SWAT with orders to KOS.
A simple change to the gang invite dialoge window is all that is needed:
X Invites you to join a gang, warning about war yada yada
Do you wish to join gang? [Yes] [No]
(Allow damage from gang members while in the gang without a concord response?) yes [ ] no [ ] (tickbox)
Small warning about the consequences.
sure that'd make the gang window a bit bigger but they could word it smarter or implement it better.
Any thoughts on this particular implementation? |

"Any thoughts on this particular implementation?"
Would suggest something slightly different, because ability to have mix of people who can and cannot take damage in gang without Concord dropping their donuts... is just asking for trouble.
Make the ability to damage the gang members gang-wide switch. When the gang is formed, the gang leader gets request window if they want to allow 'friendly fire' in the gang. When a player gets gang invite, it lists if the gang they're about to join has this feature enabled, or disabled. So anyone joining the gang knows in advance what they can expect.

instead of "dont take damage from gang members", how about adding a "dont send distress signal to concord wehn taking damage from gang member" option?

I would prefer the second option, cant accidently shoot someone that way(though not sure how smartbombs should react to this). gives you an active desicion and not a responsive one
I really like how smart bombs work ATM, you need to think... A LOT. If it went this way, you could just have people mindlessly activating smartbombs everywhere without a second thought. This game requires a great amount of player skill, this is why i think any change to this system must ALWAYS cause damage to the gang, there should be no way to turn ANY damage off, what so ever.
I dont mind the idea of waving your right to concord intervention, but i dont think it is any where near an elegant solution as allowing a 'friendly' lock. I also dont think friendly locks should be instant either, they should use the current targeting system, as thats part of the disadvantage of using a big ship, and that should be kept in all aspects.
Or perhaps, an even more extreme idea, just to throw out there, what if before you undocked, in the fitting window, you could trigger whether your ship is going to be a 'support craft' or an 'attack craft', and weapons would not be able to be activated on support craft and only friendlys could be locked, the converse being true for 'attack craft'
Probably not a good idea, and im sure some of you will tell me why. But im all for the promotion of open, free discussion, if you ask me nicely :P

I like the "dont send distress signal to concord when taking damage from gang member" option. Make it a gang-wide option, to prevent confusion when some might have the option active and others inactive
Still requires the skill of thinking with smart bombs, as they still deal damage to every ship in range, but does not get the SBing ship insta-popped by concord.
Popping a gang-member's pod should be avenged by concord though, even if done with smartbomb. As blowing ones ship is something different than popping ones emergency-craft (pod)

Another idea in the same thread, allow targets you've locked to be 'passive' or 'non-aggresive', meaning only assistance modules (energy transfer, remote repairer, etc..) to be activated on them.

YAY!!!!
Thanks Oveur, knew you'd stumble across this thread eventually :P
So the general consensus (spelling?) seems to be that it is a gang wide option (former of gang decides, extra warning when joining gang? or just highlighted or something in the normal gang invite?) and then everyone in the gang can shoot at each other to their hearts delight, pod damage / pod killing still warranting concord response.
I agree smart bombs do require you to think, and i havent yet run into any trouble using them, my motivation for starting this thread was seeing so many others lose ships.
An extra bonus to all this would mean people could have "duels" at any time any place in high sec without having to do the can trick. If this was implemented i think it should also be given a very breif mention in the tutorial, alternatively an extra big warning the first time you do it but the normal warning when u do it after that.
Thanks again Oveur, your consideration of this is appreciated :) |

There is a reason they are called Smart Bombs, because u have to be Smart to use them... I see Nothing wrong with the way things are, why should someone Not take dmg just because he is in your gang? If anything, i would like the Option to Remove Nuterals for the Overview.

Flyyn,
Greifing by gang invite with the suggested system is not possible because everyone joining the gang knows whether gang damage is enabled or not.
So if you accept gang invites (damage enabled) from people you don't know, then of course you're asking for trouble.

Edited by: csebal on 25/01/2006 10:33:31 Fact is, that concord attacking me for attacking someone, who ASKED me to fire on him is sheer stupidity. There should be no automated concord response at all, but the ability to REQUEST concord response, if you feel like it.
Even then, the response should be proportional, so someone damaging a ship lightly should be target jammed / fined / killed if not paying. Killing a ship should be punished by killing the ship. Podding a ship should be punished by podding.
Eye for an eye.
BUT, do not do anything, unless the incident happens in front of CONCORD's eyes, or the victim CALLs for concord help, which should take some time depending on system sec status ofc.
After all, in real life you do not have instaspawn police either, which warps in the moment someone tries to hijack your car to execute the idiot who dared to commit a crime.
Simply make a call police button on the sidebar, which results in some concord spawning in after the normal sec status delay. OFC if you use them without a reason, then you should be fined by CONCORD.
EDIT: OFC, if the victim 'goes away' by the time concord arrives, i should be able to prove them, that there were no hostilities here, and that i havent seen the one calling them here, so they are probably at the wrong place :) Could come handy in some 'not so high' sec systems, where concord would take some time to warp in.
This kind of delay would also make it possible to give concord back in 0.4 and lower. After all, if i attack someone - not at a gate - and he calls for the cops, he could still die by the time they arrive and i could just pretend nothing wrong happened :P Gates on the other hand should be considered eye witnesses in this aspect. After all, its hard to deny you did something wrong with the gate guns shooting ya :) My post does not represent the general or official opinion of HUN corp, or The Forsaken Empire. No matter what YOU believe. |

Not all that long ago you concord never cared if you shot a gang member. It annoyed me when it was changed and i would be very happy to see concord focusing on more pressing matters once again.
All kinds of tournaments/training etc would benefit from it.
As far as i know beeing able to shoot at gang members without concord interference was removed due to people inviting inexperienced pilots into their gang and killing them. But seriously, so what? You let that happen once and never again. The whole trust issue is a big part of eve and i do not see how it would make sense to allow corp theft and scamming while preventing something so simple as shooting at gang members.
There have been a lot of changes made to make the whole game a lot easier. I miss the days when you could accidentaly hit friends or asteroids with missiles (they used to explode if something was in their way) etc. Seeing something come back instead of yet another change to dumb the game down would be most welcome.

What about can flagging? New people run into the problem of stealing cans and being destroyed but if they have any brains they will only do it once.
Lets face it if implemented properly this CANNOT be a greifing tool except against new people who can't read the warning on their gang invite that concord will not help if they get attacked by members of this gang or words to that effect. |

Please read at least the first post before replying.
Of course the grenade can kill a nearby soldier... what in joves name are you talking about?
If you are trying to make a comparison to what we are talking about then a more valid one along your soldier idea would be:
(Current situation) Soldier A is friends with soldier B (in a gang). Soldier A punches soldier B because he felt like it. the MPs (military police = concord) bring in an AH64D Apache and blow the crap out of soldier A with rockets, hellfires and explosive rounds from its big cannon.
what we are trying to do is remove the concording of gang members who shoot other gang members (by accident or for fun). NOT removing damage because they are in a gang. |

Uh ok (not that i've ever had the problem) but what about logistics drones? you have to turn off the warning message for doing damage that will warrant a concord response when you want to use them to repair your gang members. After that it's very easy to make a mistake with combat drones. |

Also makes it far too easy to kill specific people in empire space.

I remember elliot from the noob corp too, still in CAS I see? I expect all the old timers are hanging on too (claire voyant et al). Its a very friendly start corp.

Sounds like a decent idea. Don't see any reason to not implement it, if it's not going to delay other priorities.
In the meantime, suggest to your friends that they move (click+drag, drop)the hi-slot icons around - off the top row, over to the right a bit and away from non-attack icons so they don't mis-click the wrong things at the wrong times.. My smart bomb icon was too close to my other module icons for my own taste. Too easy to mis-click when you don't want to.
Unrelated: Yes, I remember eLL. My first dead character had a lot of respect for a number of veteran players in the Gallente CAS corp, including eLLioTT. Very helpful/friendly and group-oriented NPC corp that was, compared to the others I've been in.

The expirence i have of this is from remote repping some old alliance mates i was helping in empire. Not sure if inter alliance people can shoot each other now, but couldn't then.
Friendly BS is tanking npc's, other bs's have a remote repair on it and are locking the other targets to pop them. Turn guns on a target as it gets insta popped from others, guns go onto next target locked, the remote repaired bs. Ship is not in same corp (but ganged and in allaince together) guns are turned off after first couple of shells glance off, Concord do the whole (Insert relevant OMGWTF style speak here) thing.
The warning message is disabled because PvP in low sec with all the stupid warning messages?
My suggestion, once a target is locked and has that square picture up the top (you know the one with all the gun pictures on the side) make it right click option on the picture, "Tag as friendly". This puts a nice cool spinny green cirlce around the icon at the top, is UI only but stops the guns activating on it, any repair/captransfer/tracklinking still works, but you cant accidently shoot a ship your trying to helpout. Of course it doesn't have to be a circle, or green but I hope you get the point? ;) This stops any need for people exploiting gang stuff as it is just a way of telling your ui not to activate guns on the next target if it is tagged friendly. If you use smartbombs in empire, then I really cant think of a way of helping you though

Edited by: SinBin on 26/01/2006 17:41:44 another post wanting to add easy ganks back on noobs a, all could be avioded with ccp just removing the cycling targets they add in exodus.
Smarties & ECM bursts should never be used in empire unless your the boom & never slip up, Iv not met that person yet. _______________________________________

If your in a gang - "same gang" type damage should not get you owned by concord! If you click accept into the gang etc - you have been adequately warned of any consequences. Hopefully it gets considered and implemented.

This is also a good idea, and would solve a lot of the problems. CCP if you feel noobies who accept gang invites from strangers who find ways to exploit them is too much of a problem (where do these people who cant read warnings come from?) - then please at least implement something like this.
I still have the dangerous actions warning on and its popped up a few times due to lag when an old target has died and the ship im repairing becomes the active target. (havent clicked yes yet though :P )
Also please fix the warning for using logistics drones. |

so... new patch in february... hows the consideration going? :D
apart from the new warning message, the rest could be turned on and off from the serverside, correct? If so you could put the feature in, try it for a few weeks, if you don't think its an improvement you could just turn it back off during a DT with a notice to everyone saying its now off. |

i see the OPs reasoning, and i think its a pretty good idea, but instead of opening yourself to damage fromother gang mates, have the option to open it on a certain player, esp if they r carrying a SB, u know an accedent might happen, so u would open the menu on that player, in ur gang and click allow damage... or something to that effect, but yes i agree mostly with the OPs idea......
i have a few trusted players in different corps, that i often work with, and would like the option to be able to do that, would allow sparring in high sec, or consentual PVP also, as well as numerous options, of course this would only be a gang option....
but with a thorough warning of what could happen, and a second warning on top of that, 1 can be disabled, second one cant...no one can complain, some will try, but if ur warned, no room for sympathy

yet another good implementation idea... (wd guys, i guess its true eve attracts the smarter gamers)
The only thing i would add to this is the person you have specifically allowed damage from (what about an "allow all" option?) should be given an indication (in overview perhaps) that you are now "damage enabled". This would avoid people saying they've done it when they actually haven't to try to get your concorded. |
