I need to replace my old gaming pc ... I'm sure with its almost snail pace speed its an orginal ZX80.....
As I travel, it needs to be Mobile and I need to purchase it in the United Kingdom and I don't have an unlimited budget..
I have been looking at the AlienWare ( Aurora m7700, Athlon X2 4800+, GeForce 7800, WUXGA 1920x1200) but woundered if any mobile gaming experts could give me some advice before I raid my piggy bank ... or bought a complete Dodo ..

My brother has a high spec alienware laptop and he's lucky if the battery lasts 60-75 minutes. Get more than one battery!

Alienware and a limited budget? Looking at their prices, those two don't fit. 
Dell make some nice gaming laptops (XPS II?)

Sorry ... what I was meaning is that I didn't really want to pay ú500 more for an extra 0.1% performance increase .....

I own Aw m7700 - IT IS NOT MOBILE, it is beast it weighs about 16 lbs fully packed ant was about 4k.
Truly, a best machine I have ever owned - but expensive as hell. So, its probably not a good idea if you travel + budget minded.

NEVER, I repeat, NEVER buy an Alienware computer. You buy one and half the components will fail on you in 8 weeks.
That's even more guaranteed than getting a Cuban speaking **** poor English every time you call tech support (yeah they're located in Florida, but ffs.)

Alienwares are crap.
Sure, they're good computers, but at their prices the laptops should be platinum plated and inset with diamonds.
Dell or Toshiba are fine. Just get a Pentium-M and 6800 Mobile.

I just bought a Dell XPS M170 for work and for gaming; I'd highly recommend it.
Got mine for ú1450 (2.2GHz Pentium M, GeForce Go 6800 Ultra 256MB, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD). Runs EVE great in 1920x1200 widescreen on full detail; not a hiccup, I daresay it even runs smoother than my desktop (3.4GHz P4, GeForce 6800GT 256MB, 2GB RAM) runs EVE in 1280x1024!
Just be sure to wipe the Dell Windows install and do your own. They install a huge amount of crap (see the HardOCP review for details) which grinds the system to a halt and makes it horrifically unstable.

I have an acer aspire 1800. You get the same or better performance then a dell and you pay much much less.
2GHz P4,
1 gig of RAM,
ATI x600 mobile,
and whatever else you might need. Love it.

I play on a 2 year old Advent laptop (Yes I know, PCWorld lappy but it was cheap)
The main thing to look for is it needs a decent non-integrated graphics card (Yes, some integrated work but will limit performance).
My laptop is
AMD64m 3000
1GB ram (minimum I would reccomend is 512Mb)
ATi 9600m 64Meg graphics card using modified ATi drivers
60GB 7200 HDD
DVD RW drive
This laptop has been upgraded wrt the HDD, RAM and DVD writer but appart from that it runs eve without a hitch.

I have played EVE on a laptop since 1 week after launch. The Dell Inspiron 8100 worked fine but when I moved to 8600 it got even better.
No problems with using laptops.

I also got rid of my desktop PC after spending so much time travelling and switched to a lap-top.
Sony Vaio VGN-FS115Z
Batteries are a little sucky but again im alway plugged into the mains and it's basically used as a desktop PC that i can drag around if needs be.
Runs EVE just fine, never had any problems, only change i made was to whack in another 512mb ram to take it up to a gig.

I'm really happy with my Alienware Laptop. It's more of a desktop replacement rather than a light and portable machine though. UK based, so dealt with really very nice bloke from Alienware Ireland - no problems at all.
Dell do seem to have recently got their act together on PC Games platforms, and a couple of their Laptops are now worth a look.

If you're on a budget and want top-class hardware go for the HP Pavilion ZD8000 series. The top-end ones come standard with ATI X600 256mb, good sound and 2gb RAM. Prices are half Alienware and 3/5 Dell. They run hot n hard but great value.

It's not really that budget, but very mobile and versitle. It's one of the machines I use (I have 4 machines but 1 account...yes, I know that's wierd)

You can get up to 2 gigs of memory and a dual-layer, DVD-RW drive.
Yes the tablet aspect makes it a bit more expensive, but I love it for taking notes in class and doing all the damn readings I have to do.
Oh, I forgot to mention it's 15" 1400x1050 display

My main Eve-computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000d
1.73GHz Pentium M
1GB DDR2
80GB HDD
8x Dual-Layer all-format DVD-RW drive
15.4" widescreen (1280x800)
ATi x300 128MB
Got the 9-cell battery, weighs in at a little over 7lbs, and can get up to 2 hrs of eve gameplay per charge, or 5 hrs of continuous music playing w/the screen on standby mode (tested and verified at work :D)
I got it back in October for a little under $2000 CAD after taxes and such. I <3 it.

I have a HP Pavilion ZD8228
3 GIG P4, 256 Raddy, 512 RAM, 80 gig HD and 17" flatscreen.
It a replacement desktop laptop, so its bigger than a normal lappy as the screen size gives away. Still its mobile and runs HL2, Quake 4 etc at high settings.
Whats more it only cost ú1000 smackers.

I think this model was a closeout at Staples, but it's PIMP. I originally wanted an Alienware, but saw this laptop on the shelf and couldn't resist.
And Jacques'... there's a new Alienware model out that is about the same price as the Dell Inspiron 9300. Alienware was losing a ton of sales to Dell because of having waaaaaaaaay overpriced laptops... but now they're back in the competition.

i have a Fujitsu Lifebook N5010. Agreeably it runs Eve great, the screen rocks but with a pent 4 and 64mb dedicated video ram, and xbrite screen (same light and clarity of a regular CRT monitor its battery life sux (only drawback)

standard 256 ddr2 which i added another 512 meg of ddr2 for under ú50
15" screen,smart machine and fast.
whole thing including memory upgrade sub ú550 pc world,memory was purchased elswhere.
good fast and very reasonably priced laptop that runs eve extremely well.even on wireless.

I use a sony vaio (its 18 months old now so struggles with BF2) but it runs eve ok but the battery only lasts 30mins.
Iv'e heard good things about alienware laptops for gaming but it realy depends how much isk you have.

Personally I suggest checking out www.widowpc.com. They built my laptop and it can play Doom 3 on Battery on high for about two hours. This thing is a beast. The only problem is that it weighs a ton so if you're planning on carrying it around you should start working out now .

I have a RockDirect QuaddraTi. The model itself is no longer made but it still plays EVERY game i want it to without problems. Its so good its replaced my desktop as my main gaming machine.
Also you cant go wrong with a 3yr FREE waranty.

If I need to play on the Go I use my Acer Tabket PC laptop. it's only a 1.6 with a intel GFX but it plays well plus I can play EVE well in tablet form. and I get about 4 hours of play time.
Basic things to know about laptops:
1. Never ever ever get a sony vaio, thy will fail.
2. Dell are good.
3. Acer are better :)

With alienware, you get to pay for the brand and a stupid looking case.

my frend has one. I dont know which model exactly, but it could run any and every game he threw at it. HL2, WOW, tons of different RTS, etc.
I seriously advise against buying an alienware. Dell would be a good alternative because of their customer support.
Sager makes killer gaming laptops though. |
