Personally, my first char was made Caldari only because of the Uniform. I am a Star Wars Imperial freak and they had the only char I could make remotely look like an Imperial Fleet officer. Other than that I have no love at all for Caldari, I fly Minmatar ships in Amarr space and I despise missiles...

Caldari just seem to appeal to most people. It's likely the military thing, and that Caldari seem to look quite human.
People may also just like missiles =/
Also, if a n00b reads the forums before making a character, they will see all this stuff about Caldari and how good they are, and just say: "OMFG BBQ LOLZ, I R GOIN CALDARI!"
Though maybe not like that..

I picked caldari because of looks and more importantly, the military background with a history of gambling and such. --

I picked Amarr because their ships looked like they had been designed by sober people, and because lasers sounded like the best weapon choice...then I found out that missles never miss....

I play the Minmatar, well not all, but 3 of them. (Perhaps some kind of masochism. ) ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

I played Minmatar (Brutor) during the beta, and on release I thought it might be nice to fly a finished ship, so I went Caldari.

In a racial war Caldari probaply wouldn't do well at all, because most people who play caldari would probaply be totally oblivious to what's going on anyways, being the bloatrace and all. Usually the biggest factions never do well because most of the people in them aren't in it out of passion. I mean even right now the biggest roleplaying factions that really stand for one empire or the other are found in Minmatar and Amarr, the two races that acctually have the fewest players...

Actually I like the ruthless corporate background of Caldari a lot. In beta I played Gallente because I thought the ships looked better and as a Federation appealed to me, too. And then a mate from Jumpgate convinced me to go Amarr in retail and quit a week later as he moved house.
And then I found out that background actually means **** as you don't get a bonus for flying the ships of your own race :P

I've had Gauge here as a PC of mine for almost 7 years. He started in the tabletop RPG Alternity Star*Drive Setting. He's a corporate made (and generally controlled), cybernetically enhanced grunt with a wide moral streak. Caldari simply fit the character to a 'T' !
As with some others here, the religious zealotry of the Amarr simply doesn't appeal to me.
The Minmatar will probably be my next... i love rooting for the underdog. _______________________________________________

well except for the military part, if you wanted to be the underdog you should have gone minmatar :P
anyway, i picked sebiestor cus they're more of a 'work from the shadows' type the amarr religious fetish just bores me to death, and i didn't like the caldari because of the whole 'GI-Joe-i-can-make-bricks-using-my-chin-as-a-template' look and the gallente, well... they're french!

Sebiestor was my very first, I didnt start in any of the others pretty much for the same reason you listed.
if it was for looks, I would choose caldari first .. Amarr last . . the amarr, well they have no lips if it was the look of ships it would be Gallente . . minmatar last . . looks like they were stuck with left over parts
I do play all races now, my 2 mains are minmatar, then follow by gallente, Caldari and last Amarr

More people pick caldari because you get to make a character that looks like one of the cast of Starship Troopers, is in the army and is therefore perceived as 'hard', and has a face that looks like its saying 'you wanna piece of me, punk?'
Less people choose the Amarr because they look more intelligent and appear to be more suited to needlework and librarianship. They also wear attractive hooded tops.
Gallente is an interesting choice. They look and feel French. Make of that what you will.
More people should pick Minmatar, for the simple reason that they look thick, don't wash and appear to enjoy heavy metal, which is probably an accurate representation of the average eve player.

That's exactly the reason why everyone and their Fedo pick Caldari though, let's say you want to make a pilot that uses Amarr ships really fast, you just make a Caldari char with higher atributes and you're up there much faster.
That's also exactly the reason why in war between the empires Caldari wouldn't do good I think. Lots of people just roll them for whatever reason, but not to acctually be a Caldari.
But, yea, I do have to say its kind of disappointing that there is absoloutly no engine rewards for picking a certain race over another unless you really want the stats for a certain group of skills.
I don't think that being born on some planet should give you special powers of some sort, but when it comes to interaction with people in the universe you should always have some different reactions based on your race and background. Even the rights you enjoy in certain regions of space could be different depending on where you are acctually from.
I mean it would be really nice if socially there was more of an impact from your race.

I never really thought about it much. My misanthropic side always assumed it was a direct result of the fact that the political background of Caldari is overtly phallangist over laying slickly advertizable, sterile culture. Basically western society in a nutshell.

Lygos, yeah, the Caldari represent the stark, inhuman side of unfettered capatalism. behold the almighty ISK!
Of course, Gauge isn't like that. he's a diamond of 'humanity' in the rough. _______________________________________________

Yeh. Everyone said you should pick up balanced atts, so Caldari was the best choice. 8 int 9 perc 6 char 8 will 8 mem. Anyway, I fly Minmatar ships now.

For those who know anything about attributes, the charisma factor is a big reason to go Caldari. Charisma sucks, having it means other stats are lower.

I think CCP should finally toss us Charisma heavy characters a bone and base some really valuable skill lines on charisma.
I would like to see an investigation skill line that can be used to find out stuff about corps, players, locations... Like for example where a player is, who the members of a corp are, that kind of thing. That way bounty hunting and intelligence operations would finally become a reality. Of course they would be based on charisma.
Also a smuggling skill line would be cool, that gives you the ability to bribe customs agents to look the other way, or avoid them from detecting your cargo alltogether by making clever excuses when something shows up as slaves on their scanner "Those aren't slaves, it's a bondage fetish party I host on my ship..."
