Anyone have a good use for a tractor beam other than producing giggling when you town in a cargo container? I mean... wtf? I can just fly to a cargo container, why should I spend time and money into this skill and module???

Flying is time, time is money, I use tractor beams on my mission ship and I'm sure the support ships use them too to pull in the loot in complexes.
Remind me about The Maze.

I use them on my support ship. Significantly reduces time through complexes. Speeds up cleaning out a mission after im done by myself as well. I already had the skills for tractors though. I dont know if I would have taken the time to learn the skills otherwise.

Extreamely useful for mission/complex runners for cutting down on loot collecting times.
Fit 2 x tractor beams to an indy. Get an Indy that travels at 500+m/s E.G. 3 x cargo cans all about 15-19km away start to tractor 2 cans while heading to the 3rd can in your indy, by the time your indy gets to its can, the other 2 cans it is tratoring arrive at the indy a couple of seconds later. This has cut loot collecting times down from for example 1 hour to just 20 mins
you should try a loot collecting bs hehe, 7-8 x tractor beams, 7-8 x expanders in lows
does the job super quick

When I started running missions in a BC for the first time, I also started wishing I had tractor beams
Though I'm still not going to train all those skills.. yet. The 20km ones just aren't worth it for someone who isn't already using those skills for something, IMO. Anyone got an ETA on the upgraded versions?

try doing missions in a BS.
then youll see why tractor bearms are a good idea.

I'd like if they were less CPU hungry and could be fired at ships as an aggressive act, even if they don't have an effect.

my support apoc has 4 tractors, in a level 4 mission i can have all the cans collected by the time 99% of the mission is done and dusted. ================================================== I hate forums so much. 90% sig pictures, 10% content. |

It's usefull for slower haulers in mining ops. Miners fill can, haulers warps to 15km to a gamg member, tractor beam on. No need to setup belt BM's that way if you move ops around alot. |

Jita and like systems are busy busy busy. I was there once and saw a hot babe zipping by in a cute little frigate. These days, who has time to wonder where she's going? Who would bother to rely on positive attitude thinking there might be another zipping by in the next moment.
The tractor beam is here to save the day. Just lock on to her and yank her to you. But, be gentle, not like Scorpion in Mortal Kombat... Now, she has your attention, you have hers... both of you are close... love is in the air!

this is one of the best things in eve .
I use indy with 2 tractors to loot collect , big lev 4 mission takes 10 mins instead of an hour . probe with 2 tractors tempest with 1 tracor instead of luncher for lev 3 missions , make millions from missions i never used to bother collecting loot
this is the biggest time saver / money earner I know in eve ( all the loot i never bothered with b4 )

An excellent investment for haulers and mission runners, and mining ops.
Don't leave home without it.

And guess what ... You can pull the jet can full of Cap Booster 800s with a tractor beam, for all of your mission tanking needs.
Now isn't that a cool idea? :))

I like how it lets you be alot lazier with bookmarks and all, for ore and loot collecting.
then again, I had 2 graviton physics books from before I came back, when it had practically no use... and had already trained both the other skills....
if I actually had to train those FOR getting it, I don't think I'd bother.
of course that is, if I wasn't already going to train them.

Edited by: GlimmerMan on 30/01/2006 08:57:00 I use a Prorator (Elite Sigil) with a tractor beam for collecting loot cans. Lows full of Nanos, 10MN AB II in mid. The thing can do almost 1000 m/s, nice, but when it reaches a can it bounces off of it to just outside the opening range which slows collecting all of the cans down by a fair bit.
However, if I always target the can I'm heading towards with the tractor beam there is zero bounce, and the distance is cut too. Win-Win. I love using my tractor beam in this way.

It is most definitely not a toy, but a very useful tool. It has two main uses as I see it.
1. Ore hauling. Equip ore haulers with 2 tractors and a sensor booster, and you increase their ability to haul quite a bit as they don't have to spend time getting to the cans.
2. Loot collector. Before, I usually spent quite a lot of time during and after a mission collecting loot in a Ferox. That was taking a LONG time if you had a 150 km loot trail. Now, I zip through the mission in a Raven (have upgraded), and come back in a Cormorant with MWD and 4 tractor beams for collecting the loot. With that ship, I collected every single loot can from a 'Rogue Drone Harrassment' mission (20-25 or so), in 4 minutes (plus the time to change ship and come out and back). All in all, in that mission I probably saved 10-15 minutes compared to what I'd usually spend. Primarily, this cuts down on boredom (collecting loot is boring), and it increases your income since you can run more mission in the same time.
So, all in all, this is definitely a great item, and I don't think the cost (skill or money) is one bit too high.

it works great for npc hunting. now if CCP actually labeled the PVP cans to the ones who got the kill it might be useful for the rest of eve also.

Use the prorator with a 10mn mwd for blockade running and use a sigil for looting its much better, fit 2 tractor beams and a sensor booster to speed up can locking, with 5 nanofibers its faster then the prorator and can carry more cargo.

Time spent to train Science V + graviton physics I (assuming you have science IV already) : just over 5 days
Money spent on buying 3 small tractor beams to fit on your various ships (for me my ratting domi and two fast ity Vs): 4.5mil
Saving huge amounts of time having to crawl to each can that are within 20k: priceless
I look foward to the medium and large tractors, and I know a lot of my corp m8s are too :) ___

mining ops for sure. especially in 0.0 ops, the less time a hauler spends in the belt the better. Pluse as pointed out no need for bms' and you reduce the chance of bumping your miners out of alignment for warp.

Edited by: James Lyrus on 30/01/2006 12:12:10 Tractors are great. Mission cleanup, especially on extravaganzas and assorted L4s is a pain in a BS (especially if you left off the afterburner in favour of better tanking).
A sigil (800m/sec) and 2 tractor beams _vastly_ accelerate the process.
Fly to one, tractor two others and pick up 3 cans at once. Just be careful you don't go too fast, and leave the can at more than 20km away :).
Also means your closure on a single can at 20km is 500m/sec faster, and you have to worry less about bouncing.
Mining ops, is a good use for a fully expanded hauler. My bustard does something like 50m/sec when full of expanders. Being able to reach out and grab cargo cans makes me much happier. -- We are recruiting

i just wish they had longer range..
but yeah, my 0.0 raven has a tractor fitted at all times. Really useful mod, I love it.. it's not that great for long range ships though, if I wanna fight at 80km in my Raven the tractor is *almost* useless (it's still worth having, saves me a few minutes).
I want a medium (40km) and a large (80km).. they should require the fittings of med and large weapons (200grid / 2000grid maybe) ________

I put 7 at a catalyst once, now that was fun, . it is a shame the catalyst does't have a litle more cargo space.
Now I'm using 2 beams on an Iteron III and they help a lot gathering the loot.
BTW, I already had the skill too, no pain except buying the modules.
