Might as well add my 2 cents.
With all the damn problems this game has, bookmarks are the least of them. I personally have never used a gate bookmark so the change will not effect me. However, there sits CCP racking their brains on yet another pirate issue. That is all they seem to do is spend all their time working on pirate issues and the hell with the rest of the game. This game was never presented as solely a pirate and prey game. Pirating was to be a facet of play, not the be all and all of the entire game. As it stands now, pirates rule the game. There are too damn many pirates, just as there are too many manufacturers. IF CCP wants to spend all their time trying to compensate for this they will end up chasing their tails.
Bookmarking gates is not a great game feature. It resulted from pirates continually camping certain gates and killing all who pass through, very often for no other reason than to grief. Of course, this was inevitable due to the poor game design which provided no other way for pirates to operate other than to camp gates since evrything is just warp from point A to point B. By not providing any other interesting avenue for players to pursue more and more players have turned to piracy thus compounding the problem. So now all these pirates have a problem, people are bookmarking to get past them. CCP's solution now is to eliminate bookmarking. Now the pirates life becomes a bit easier. Now perhaps even more will turn to pirating and the cycle continues.
If you use nature as an example, a balance needs to be struck. In nature, prey far out number the predators. In many cases, prey outnumber predators by factors of thousands. If nature imitated EVE and there were one predator for every 10 prey, guess what? You got it, there wouldn't be any prey for very long. That is precisely what is happening in EVE. The prey are leaving. This bookmark thing will drive even more prey out of the game and the balance between predator and prey will become even worse.
Instead of concentrating on like maybe fixing the bounty system, which is such a joke that no one even talks about it any more, they opt to come up with this bookmark fix. Maybe with a workable bounty system including viable tools for bounty hunters, maybe they wouldn't need Concord to blow the crap out of TankCEO in Yulai or wherever it happened. Perhaps then they would create a natural predator to control the pirate menace and bring some balance back into the game.
