Then how come so many films have copied and mimicked parts of it?
And they used so much wire work because 90% of the stuff they did couldn't have been done without it. Go train with a group of martial arts masters for 6 months, 18 hours a day, and then try telling me that what your doing sucks.

Never doubted it mate, but put simply, the matrix fight scenes are awesome.
They had to train for a long time to be able to perform the fight scenes, and at the end of the 3rd film they were good martial artists.
But i gotta agree mate, Tony Jaa is a god, he choreographed all the fight scenes himself and is about as close to a real life neo as we'll prolly get.
Another contender for best fight scene has to be the end fight from cradle 2 the grave, Jet Li is ace! ---- Join Us

Agree that one from Ong-Bak is awesome. IIRC One guy resorts to chucking plates at him like a girl lol.
some of my favourites: The bar / indoor fight in Crouching Tiger where the big dudes all attack her and end up wrecking the place and come back later with big red bruises and broken arms and stuff. The orange leaves sword fight in Hero. The street shootout in Heat. Bar fight in From Dusk Till Dawn. sadly enough I also liked the one in the house in Mr & Mrs Smith.
if you mean kicky / punchy fights: One of the ones in Raging Bull is great - a while since i have seen it but the one with the lightbulb flashes in it. Biker fight in Goodfellas. Fight Club is hard to beat as well. Bar fight with Bob DeNiro and Harvey Keitel in Mean Streets.
Best one in the Matrix series is probably where Trinity fights the coppers, and I agree that the Matrix should get at least a mention - the first film was unbeleivably good, whereas the other two just overbaked the same idea and created rather contrived action films.

Ong-Bak - i particulary love the fact he can defy gravity by jumping into the air doing triple knees seemingly float there for a second before finally landing. Kickboxing FTW
Jet Li has got to be one of my all time favourites, the wee bugger is so quick.
Bruce Lee obviously, however i only wish he was around long enough to do movies with some decent coreography.
rl fighter, the russian heavy weight in UFC can't for the life of me remember his name, he decimated everyone ive seen him fight. Quite a young guy i think (quite hairy lol)

I'm a fan of historical swordsmanship, so I really enjoyed the fight scene between Liam Neeson and David Roth at the end of "Rob Roy": No background music, no jumping on tables, no candles getting cut in half. It just seemed far more intense than most other Hollywood offerings.

The forest scene in House of the Flying Daggers was beautifully shot, and very well executed, utilizing similar flying technique to that seen previous in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I was very impressed by this scene, and the co-ordination of the bamboo fights which accompanied it including the bamboo prison generated within.

I can tell what is terrible in any fight scene a completely ruins it for me. Thats the strange inclusion of weak hits -think the classic 'guy holding you from behind crushing you whatever and you raise your arm to hit him with the back of your clenched fist' You guys know what i mean - i hate anything like this in any fight movies its so unrealistic especially when they howl and stagger back :(
remember Manny 'the man' from Brotherhood of the Wolf he just booted everyone in the sternum and they went flying, it worked cos i really looked like he had just put alot of force behind it.
I like to feel the hits, and believe that yeah that would not only work but hurt like hell.
The only exception to this is the complex coreography with eastern martial arts films were its more a dance than fight. watching the leg movements and the incredibly control is breathtaking.
Backhanding someone aint :)

The best fight is in the german agent's home in Bourne Supremacy, hands down. The dramatic use of window blinds is what makes this scene a winner. It is so cool leveled, you don't ever think "wow, cool stuntwork" when you see it.
Best shootout is the last desperate attempt at the money in The Way of the Gun. The gunplay is cleverly coordinated and logical, has an awesomely slow pace and believable outcome. It is stomach churning, exciting and very very compelling. Every serious drama where guns are fired (perhaps a drama about cops?) should seek inspiration in this film.
Anyone thinking Matrix is exceptional for anything but pioneering "bullet time" deserves to be shot in the face with a bean bag. Really, the only thing that makes Matrix what it is is the technological breakthroughs (Bullet time and virtual cinematography). Back when the first film was new, I really thought the lobby shootout was awesome because it was unlike anything I had seen in motion, but now when I rewatch it I can't help but to think "this is the scene where the franchise ended, they killed the story and made it a no brainer with crappy action and pathetic dialogue". The "kung fu" scenes are poor wire work crap, except for the Dojo showdown scene which is soaked with style and good camerawork. The Reloaded fight against the clones is very inventive and visually pleasing too.

The scene in "Hero" When the guy with the spear fights. Theres the music from the player and the drops of water that just seem to make it an even more impressive fight scene.
Something about how that guy handled the spear and made its elacity usefull in combat was amazing to me as well. --- And im here again in the rain, alone and cold. Liquid rebirth of the world, destroyer of souls.
