So here I am as a new blood who somehow got lured from your typical MMORPG to the prospects of the EVE universe, and after cruising a bit with the EVE Online reviews I noticed something about the ''total'' subscribers numbers.... The news said that EVE online broke the 500k+ sub but when I login to play, it says tranquility along with 20-30k players depending on the time of the day... Am I missing something here or is tranquility the server for people with trial accounts so that they don't bother the real subscribing people? (mine is one by the by). If it's not, where are the numbers coming from? I am very interested in this MMO game but after seeing the news of OMG 500K subs and then loggin in to see a mere peanut gallery of 20-30k people is headscratch worthy.
Thanks a lot in advance. |

You're failing to differentiate between the number of active subscriptions and the number of people who are currently logged in.
When it says that TQ has 40K people, that means that 40K people are currently logged in. |

There is a pretty big community, but it's also a rather niche game -- you won't find numbers like WoW has.
At the same time, EvE's playerbase tends to be older, on average, than most MMO's players, so you also deal with people who are at work, college, or are spending time with their families. The most active times for these sorts will be in the evenings (their time) and on the weekends. |

Possibly, but remember that everyone shares the same game universe in Eve, you could potentially interact with any one of the 36k (at the moment) people online. Most mmo's have a few thousand players per version (server/shard) of the world.
Also for a always on PVP game with items drop on death it has a large subscriber base. |

This is semi related to the discussion in your other thread.
Most people play games to relax, have some fun for a few hours and simply..forget about real life. EVE does not really allow this, which is a curse and a blessing depending on who you ask.
First off EVE caters to (in my experience) older player base. People who have patience, who has time to devote them self to a game that wont just take up a couple of hours every weekend, but a game that often feels more like a second job depending on where you end up. This alone is enough to chase a way a lot of potential gamers.
You also need to consider the skill system. Again more patience is needed. You cant just grind for XP for a week and have a "maxed" character. Actually, there is no such thing as a "maxed" character in EVE (not counting CCP characters) so you can never really reach that "I want to be the best" goal that is much more easily obtained in other games.
And of course..this is spaceships! This genre alone caters to less people then say WOW with the more...classic fantasy setting. Its also a very male dominated environment which means that even if there is a lot of female gamers out there, few would be interested in something like EVE.
The numbers of people online might seem low compared to what your used to in other games, but as others mentioned, these are all people that you are sharing the "world" with, not people spread out on random servers. This makes sure that you can easily find people around at all times, but at the same time the universe is so large that if you prefer to be "alone" you can find very private and secluded areas.
In my own opinion its currently well balanced, small enough that individual players means something, everyone has a chance to get "known" or "compete" in certain fields, but its large enough that there is no lack of social interaction and/or competition. Current standards being WoW? You hit the nail on the head with quantity/quality. A lot of people find EVE too difficult to get into, or not their cup of tea because its so player driven and doesn't have "end game" content.
If you wanted to compare in some manner, look how many "typical" MMO servers would be active if you took EVE's playerbase and divided them up among different servers. 8? 10? 12? All those would be fairly decent considering most MMOs end up consolidating after release due to the hype influx and subsequent people leaving. That was true until a few years ago. Then CCP made a few not so popular decisions, they stopped releasing subscriber numbers (one wonders why), and a few months later announced they were sacking 20% of their employees (one wonders why).

And well, if everyone of the 500k subscribers is playing one hour a day, you should see an average of 20k people online. Which seems to be the case.

Holy crap you guys have flown off topic.
Herzov wrote:I was just wondering since this game has gotten quite a bit of coverage and I was expecting a huge community playing at all times of the day. If that's the case, where the hell did the subs go? are people here alt-alholics? The reason you don't see close to 500k people online is due to...
- timezones: you generally have 4 different time blocs; European... Americas... Asian/Austrialian... and Russian. With an average of 25 to 30k people online at all times (and peaks of 50k on weekends) that accounts for 100 to 120 people right there (with peaks of 200k on weekends).
- alts: there are quite a few alts out there. The statistic I remember from a year or two ago was ~2 for each player (bear in mind this was the average... there are lots of people with only single accounts and a few players with lots of accounts).
- Bittervets/Vacations/Busy life/Etc: These guys just can't bear the thought of unsubscribing but are either too busy and/or burned out to actually play. So they just train skills.... hoping one day that fire in the depth of their soul will return them to the meat grinder that is EVE.

Subs have been steadily increasing since that debacle.
Also, I found this: EVE Online Passes 500k subscribers Worldwide
I think the key word there is "world wide." Since we can't access the Serenity Server (see: China) I guess you can say we have ~450k active accounts right now. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

My personal average time spent online since I began playing is about 1 hour per day (actually, a bit less than that), with a total of 2,754 logged-in hours and 6,009 log-ins. Then again, I had a much, much higher average in the first couple of years. The average EVE player actually has a slightly higher average, somewhere in between 1.5 to 2 hours per day (or, to keep it more realistic, translating this to 45-60 hours per month). So, on average, for every person you see online at an average time of the day, there's between 12 and 16 subscribers (let's call it 14 for now).
Last time I checked, ~35*~14=~490k, which is pretty darn close to the expected 500k subscriber count (less than a 2% difference). Mathematically, makes perfect sense. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T Build your own EVE PC http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=1559734 |

Actually it means 40k characters logged in. This would be 40k people if there was only one character per person, which as we all know is far from true.
Number of subscriptions is meaningless. Someone makes an account trying out the game, doesn't like it, he leaves after the free trial - his account is still a "subscription".
As for the actual number of players, no one knows it. Not even CCP can know it, unless they run some really heavy duty heuristic tools that match accounts with IP ranges and log-in timers.
Not even the "currently logged in" is accurate; again, because of the widespread use of alts, you can safely cut that number by at least 1/3 to get the actual number of logged individual people. |

If there are 500,000 subscribers and 25,000 online you can conclude the average user logged on 1 hour 20 mins. Which sounds about right to me.
Also last time I loaded up Call of Duty on the PS3 there was 150,000 online, so CCP is doing pretty damn fine to get 25,000 |

There has been a drop-off in the number of people logging on recently. This has been attributed to number of reasons including summer holidays and the release of Grand Theft Auto V on consoles. It did seem to line up with the release of GTA V but it may be for other reasons. I don't know to be sure.
At 'peak time' of 6pm GMT the numbers always used to get into the high fiftys daily and maybe a little more at the weekends but not its topping out a little over forty. Other aspects of the in-game economy are worrying but I won't expand any further on the issue. At least one other thread on the issue of falling player numbers has been closed by the ISD for supposed 'trolling'.
Best idea is to wait until Rubicon is launched in November. If numbers don't pick up after then we will be saying 'Houston........we have a problem'. |

Note that the 500k subscriber figure is I believe the number of paid for accounts. And given the nature of the game (Plex!) it very possible for the richer players (especially the economy players) to be running multiple accounts to support their activities. This inflated the subscriber figure a bit/a lot depending on how heavy you think this practice happens. |

You should have in mind that the space is so huge in this game that sometimes even with 50k characters logged the space looks empty, also maybe you are in a less populated area, some regions of the game are more populated than others. It's different from other games because in most MMOs you have like 3 or 4 maps for each "level" but in EVE there is no such levels like you should already know and than people tend to look for less populated systems where they can run their business with less competition.
You can always go to Jita and there I'm sure you'll find lots of players. |

This inflated the subscriber figure a bit/a lot depending on how heavy you think this practice happens. A paid account is a paid account, doesn't really matter who paid for it... PLEX don't (usually) pop out of thin air, somebody had to pay cash to make them appear in the first place. And the last time they gave any sort-of-official figures, between 20% and 25% of paid accounts were paid for with PLEX.
P.S. If you mean "number of people playing" vs "number of paid accounts", that's a bit more difficult to ascertain (for a number of reasons I won't delve into unless you insist). And yes, it's fairly obvious there's far more paid accounts than actual people playing (the occasional account sharings notwithstanding). Gut guesstimate? I'd say about 1.5 accounts per real-life person on average. With a lot of people having just one, a decent number having 2, a few 3 or more, and very few entire armies of accounts. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T Build your own EVE PC http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=1559734 |

There have been a lot of good responses already but I figured I'd address this bit specifically:

The 500,000 subscription number refers to the total number of subscribers. Just like how WoW is said to have had over 10 million accounts at one time. When WoW had 10 million accounts it didn't have 10 million people playing at any given time.
If there are 500,000 subscribers and 50,000 are online at peak time then 10% of the population is online. That isn't bad for a normal day and seems about right.
At the moment that I am writing this there are just under 44,000 players online.
If you consider that all of those players who are logged in are all on the same server that's pretty wild.
EVE Online continues to grow its player base which is an oddity in the MMO world since it is the only MMO to do so year after year since release. There was definitely a wobble in subscription numbers a couple of years ago but that has since been rectified.
If you are worried about EVE's population I wouldn't worry too much - it continues to grow and there are enough people online at any given time to run into players everywhere in Highsec and in most places in 0.0. |

Please elaborate..... Darian If you are genuinely interested about the server population of people logging into the game at any given time you can go here:
http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility
CCP makes the information easily accessible and that site tracks the number of players online.
According to some players EVE Online has been in "decline" since it opened.
Strangely, the overall population of the game has steadily increased year over year since release.
And yet there are constantly posts in the forums loudly proclaiming the impending "death" of EVE Online and how it is "dying."
And, Darian, the value of PLEX is whatever people are willing to pay for it. You may be willing to pay up to a maximum of 350 million ISK and that's great. Other people are clearly willing to pay more so the market will reflect that. If you want to discuss the merits of market forces I would suggest making use of the subforum dedicated to that topic: Market Discussions ( https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=253 ). |

500K sounds reasonable when you consider EVE is an international game covering all timezones and is played mostly by older gamers with jobs & families. That 500k figure would include have to include alt accounts, so id guess maybe 150-200K individuals at most. If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me. Now don't judge or question. Darian The value is what people are willing to pay, if PLEX are going at 600mil it means people are willing to pay the price, if for them it wasn't worth they wouldn't buy and price would go down.
The fact that for you is a ripoff doesn't mean that isn't the market value.
Also, we're going OT.
Also, I don't understand why is so important to know subscriptions and why people even raised WoW as a comparison, the games are completely different, being 2 MMOs doesn't mean they can be compared, the only MMO that remotely compared maybe was DAOC, which, if I recall correctly, might have done EVE's numbers at it's peak, but should be nowhere close now. |

For somewhat casual players with decent (not even that high) RL wages, a PLEX might be worth 1-2 hours of RL work but 20-30 hours of in-game work. For them, if thinking about buying PLEX with ISK, even 50 mil ISK might seem too much. Obviously, they'll usually be only selling PLEX for ISK.
For hardcore expert players with very low RL wages, a PLEX might be worth 12-24 hours of RL work but 2-3 hours of in-game work. For them, if thinking about selling PLEX for ISK, even 2 billion ISK might not seem enough. Obviously, they'll usually be only buying PLEX for ISK.
Also, not every player can get extra work hours in RL, but most can easily get more in-game work done, and not all regard in-game work as actual work, which further skews the balance point towards higher ISK values for a PLEX beyond what you'd expect otherwise. |

PLEX IS A RIPOFF PLAIN AND SIMPLE - DONT USE IT.
PLEX IS ONLY WORTH 300-350MIL ISK AND IS BEING SOLD FOR UPWARDS OF 500-600MIL.

How exactly does one determine how much PLEX is REALLY worth? It's an item on the open market. Its value is dictated by supply and demand. So if it's selling at 500-600 mil, guess what? That's what it's worth! |

EvE might not have millions subscribers, but what it does ave is nearly fanatic loyal player base. So fanatic in fact it makes headlines all over gaming industry news outlets when players go riots...
Were small but louder then anything else out there. Our market has set new standards how markets in mmo-¦s should work, etc... Heck other copy the model we allready have here...
Not bad for small Icelandic game development company focusing making the best space Sci-Fi mmo.
Last i heard eve has subscriber count that has surpassed population of Iceland. Just becouse there 30-50k people online, its just small part of that. But all those people share the same universe. Its not divided up into separate shards like other mmo-¦s do. When we have big fight, there's chance everyone will hear it.
So don't let it fool you that you only see 40k people online. We still make precedents on how mmo-¦s should work and EvE's players has been making headlines regularly with battles sizes you can only dream about in other games.. |
