Once again EVE continues to break milestones despite being well into its third year. May EVE show continued excellence for many years to come.

Back when EVE was released, I remember that CCP said EVE was designed to have a maximum of 100000 subscribers and 20000 concurrent players online. I think that was meant both in terms of limitations of the hardware and programming language as in population density of the universe.
At this point it is pretty obvious that 20000 concurrent players is not the end of it. I wonder what CCP at this moment would consider to be the ceiling for tranquility (with the new 64bit cluster) both in terms of hardware and population density.

bring on that new hardware!
I'de love to know which Datacentre you chose, as we're going through the same (smaller scale) process ourselves right now. Would be interesting if we chose the same one.

Yup, the completely arbitary transition from 9999 accounts to 100000 is surely something CCP can be proud of! \o/ ___

Nice, now what's the next milestone ?
1000 players in a single zone without crash nor lag ?
Seriously, I'd be curious to know how the devs will plan to change the game should it become bigger - like 40K players online. Imagine all lag and congestion problems solved, just focus on game play changes due to the increased population: will we have new systems, or we'll just pack more people in the current areas, will we have more routes, more bpos, more asteroids and market npc orders or we'll have to fight more for the current resources ...
The beauty of all this ... you know, that feeling of walking a frontier line and seeing both the known and the unknown, like the first UO months, something that no mmogs made me feel since then. I just love it !

well CCP were talkoing about a 60000 concurrent online given the acurrent amount of nodes tho with the jove expansion in 2007 maybe it looks like it could go as high as 80-90k without serious issues (of course jita will probably start to lag at 1200 if the ice fields npc sllers and agents remain. Wont take long to fill it.

Nice work CCP! :)
I still consider myself a new player (3.5mil skillpoints), and I can remember when they were celebrating 70k. Staggering growth for sure . But, provided that they get enough hardware to stop the lag, I'm enjoying the amount of people on. Space is big and all, but if humans had colonized that many systems I'd imagine there'd be a tad more pod-pilots than I can see now ;) .

Thanks everyone!
To answer a couple of questions:
The new hardware is likely to support 50k concurrent users/250.000 subs. It's hard to know exactly before it's actually up and running (we're breaking new ground here - what we have are good estimates).
And about the staff-question - Yes we do (make more money) and yes we are (hiring more support people) - The ads have been out a while already
