I normally name 'em along the lines of "thanks for the ship sucker!" ------------------------------------------- *sig space for hire, the fee is merely your soul and a buttload of pain*
*warning, this sigspace is fitted with T2 antihijack technology* |

Well I am not planning to leave the ship logged in when I am not around! However, say I log in quickly and log out, how long will the ship take to disappear completely? It sems instantaneous (I won't be getting an aggro counter with a hauler!!) so I pressume it'll be safe?

leaving ships at safespots and logging out at safespots are different things.
if you log out, your ship will warp 1million km from your location, then dissappear after one minute (or 15 depending on the PvP timer).
Leaving a ship at a safespot consists on ejecting from your ship and warping away from it, allowing you to return to collect your ship at any time. Ships left liks this never dissappear (except if stolen or destroyed). It is under these circumstances that your ship will likely be probed down and repossessed.

I left two shuttles in space once. They lasted about 3 months before some ***** pirate killed them. Good thing I have them fully insured, but I emailed him and demanded reimbursement. He never replied. :( --------

Well someone has to ask the noob question at some point in time so can i just ask what these "probes" are? Are they actually items that one uses to scann for long distance, or are we just talking about the ingame scanner function?

More than a year ago I left a geddon fitted with errrr miners up in Vale of the silent. I went on a 1 week hollyday and when I returned it was gone.
Served me right for carebearing. Well deserved.

You're a pretty dumb person. Sorry, somebody had to tell you. It's like telling a person they have some food in their teeth. But instead of food, it's you being stupid. --------

There's a hi-slot item you can fit called a scan probe launcher. Using it you can launch probes that can scan space anthing up to 192au away and give you a rough location on any particular type of thing you want to find. Once you have a rough location you can start using narrower range probes that are more accurate and so on till you can pinpoint the grid the target type is on and warp to it. Said probes cost money, take a fair ammount of skills and the scanning takes time.

At one point ships DID wander off. This was countered by anchoring a secure can next to them.
I have no idea if this still happens.

And another noob question: I assume you steal the target ship by ejecting from your own, boarding the target, and piloting it away (meaning you need all the skills)? And then you need to come back for your own ship?

If I'm in the system you bet. Billions of shuttles, too many frigates, quite a few cruisers and a mining barge (spit) all given new homes.
Never leave a ship within scanning distance of a celestial object, it just screams, come get me.

To steal it you need to have the appropriate skills to fly it. Whenever I go in search of free ships and find them, I make a BM of their location and then go back in a shuttle. Depending on whether the newly liberated ship is armed or not I either destroy the shuttle or set it's self destruct going. I've no idea whether people get notification of their ships being "found", but I'd rather that they didn't know it was me :)

I got a free Bestower (with Astrogeology and Mining Barge skillbooks in the back seat $$) from a not terribly bright macrominer who left his abandoned hauler parked within visual range of the belt where he was mining. I'd call that an "unsafe spot."
I had to go spend 38 minutes skilling up Amarr Industrial 1 in order to fly it...came back in a shuttle and neither miner or hauler had moved. Got in and flew away.

Found a Iteron IV and a Bestower both filled with torps, must have been someones ammo dump for the near by complex. I only took them because the ships belonged to a pirate. Not a major find but it was fun.
