It has been a big weekend for Eve online. The 100,000th subscriber signed up for Eve, and over 23,000 players logged on to Tranquility on Sunday. As Hellmar stated in his Dev Blog, the current server hardware is starting to show its age.
But, there's no need to fear! The new Yaaardware is here! Well, maybe not here in the office, but on its way to the data center in London. Tranquility will go live with the new hardware later this month after extensive testing.

Excelent. Just don't do it before the 26th. Every time I set a skill going that takes as long as 30 days you guys do patches and extended downtimes forcing me to switch the skill to something temporary.
Other than that you get 5 thumbs up. Left and right hand.

2 things I've just thought of.. first off can we get an up to date mirror on the auth server for sisi sometime BEFORE the new yaaarrrrdware arrives and secondly, what does that mean if anything for the patch that was slated for mid-Feb (a weeks time) that was going to be rolled out at the same time as the yaaarrrdware?

I don't think it's secret, and I'm pretty sure that they have mentioned before that the kit is located at Telehouse in Docklands. I only remember this because a lot of my company's servers are there too.

Oh, and I think we can look forward to some pretty heavy stress-testing when the hardware goes live - an awful lot of people have held back a bit on their pvping activities due to the lag.

Someone posted about talk being cheap, and it may well be...but CCP have put their money where their mouth is, and half a ton of new equipment must've set them back quite a bit, so I highly doubt that it's hype at all.

what does this mean as far as the status of the patch that was planned early in the year to introduce the new bloodlines and fix some of the more obvious bugs left from RMR?
I love my absolution but losing ~40% dps because the RoF bonus is being applied in reverse is something that would be nice to see fixed.

Will new players be able to log on an test the new hardware when it goes up? From what I read somewhere the database for characters on singularity are usually from an older dataset, or at least the most current one for singularity is.

Nice. On the subject. I was looking over some of the older posts. It seems to me that some of this problem comes from BM's being copied. Again it's the same old. bm's vs anti bm's argument. I heard that Sinq had a feature of warp to 0m on the gates. How did that turn out? I take it wasn't as sucess full or we whould see it ingame allready. Just wondering the state of that.

The new clusters does look very good
But the thing that creates alot of the frustration atm, is that even though you say that the old cluster are not up to the challenge, u still run HUGE ad campains, this generates alot of new players, but makes this game even worse for your old paying customers. I suggest that you hold of your ads until you can deliver a superior products.
The product you are delivering us have become poor because of lag, a screwed up economical system(plz release more T2 bpos) and poor clustersupport in 0,0. (your concept, graphics ++ still rule)

cute but upon reading "The new 64 bit blades have now been delivered, assembled, firmware upgraded, tuned, tweaked and verified. At 11:00 yesterday morning (6 Feb), the shipment was picked up and is now en route to London and scheduled to be released from customs at the end of this week." I cant but help feel that you have put alot of faith in IBM given:
1) How do you update firmware when you aint had it delivered
2) How do you verify something when you dont actualy have it yet
3) verification is something you do to confirm and not assume.
I sooo strongly suggest you (and sure you will) have the following on your check list when delivered:
1) Update/check updates on all firmware/drivers including any scsi cards and network cards etc, factoring in that whilst you may have XX blade servers some might actualy be different at hardware level dispite being same model numbers. Ie revised NIC card or the like (it happens).
2) Let the kit sit in comp room for 24 hours then install and dont forget to be wary of lose/shaken lose hardware, quick visual inspection of kit with top of will do this to curcumvent transit issues and also allow kit to climatise to the operation room. Hardware is like carpets, works more reliably once setteled in.
3) Account at local 24/7 urger bar and coffee shop.
4) Few laptops with all the patch's on and a cross over cable to allow quick updates and checks.
5) Double check the BTU's and power rec's and dont forget to load balance new kit across the three phases to reduce power costs and also induce more stability. Nothing worse than nice new kit telling you that your deployment room isn't going to work as even on paper it fitted fine and the old kit fitted fine but combined they generate too much heat or trip the power .
6) More coffee.
7) Somebody with a good nose, when you plug new kit in you can tell if its going to die. As failing kit can and often does give of a smell of dieing resistars. Daft I know but actualy been able to predict many kit failures well in advance of it failing. Generaly fans dieing and then having knock on effect. You will have somebody there who knows what the score is. But with blades a few spare replacement fans always handy and sure IBM will send few gratis.
8) Have contact numbers and know exactly how long it would take to swap out a peace of kit aheead of install failure. (see rule 9)
9) Above all plan for the worst and Murphy's law will dicate it in the opposite direction; Thereby it will go great :o).
10) Coffee.

I'm assuming what they meant was that the Dev team have had a look at and a check up of the new stuff, and it's now on its way to London to be intalled where the server will actually end up operating. It's unclear though, I'm not saying your're wrong, just that was how it sounded to me.

I can't but help feel that you have put alot of faith in assumption given:
1) The Devs are in Iceland.
2) The Datacenter is in London.
3) ALL the equipment was sent to Iceland first.
In Iceland at CCP's offices the devs assembled it all, set up and configured the hardware and whatnot and made sure it all works. Then they packed it up and shipped it to the datacenter in London where it'll all be reassembled and retested and finished up.

Not too mention that they will probably have a team of IBM server techs on hand with replacement blades, should any of them go poof on startup. They did this for the last major hardware upgrade and this one is even bigger so I would imagine they would do the same here. Plus they are testing the whole cluster as the Sisi server before porting over to Tranq, so I think they've got things covered there testing wise, something will likely happen as it always does, but once she's up and running properly I think we're going to see an amazing improvement in performance.

hehe SCSI ... I think fibre channel at 4Gb for that RAMSAN, most likely 2Gb to storage ... actually I dont think I ever heard what main storage they use? most likely a jbod ..
Hope they got some decent switches and not some of those cheap Cisco 9q20's or the like
In this cold weather they will need to acclimitize but in a proper data centre like Telehouse and Global Switch next door the airflow will bring them up to room temp in 6 hours..
With IBM helping that server cluster will be up and running in a day or two ... if the cluster was already tested and works with the application it shouldnt take too long .. of course Murphys law will kick in somewhere, go out for a breath of fresh air .. go around to the Italian place beside/back of Lighterman house and get a nice coffee and get back and FINISH THE DAMN JOB after that you can go to pub

Current rate of player expansion you will reach the edge of WIntel technology very soon, even with your new hardware.
Had any thoughts on other platforms instead (and all the recompiling/coding)?

Last I heard there was like 130 servers in use on Tranquility, so we're talking about a whopping two racks if that's the case. Doesn't sound that bad to setup

TBH this is one of my major concerns it wasn't that long ago that the cluster was upgraded, and ya know how long that lasted. hehe
Hardware alone isn't gonna be the b all and end all of the problem there's many things on a gameplay design wise level that needs addressing, many of which are just as critical as the hardware.
Far more resources are gonna have to be pumped into developement and most of all testing this ongoing beta situation has gone on way too long.
There's always going to be bugs, that's a given but every patch day shouldn't end up being a total nightmare for both parties.

i think... we should be conservative about the new hardware.
CCP promised a faster EVE with the new RMR code which in fact resulted in a worse environment then it was already..
Now we can only hope that the same code works a bit faster on the new hardware..
But especially when something is new you will have a lot of child deceases..
so do the math

Update: Half a ton of kit just cleared through UK customs and has been delivered to our hosting facility. Froggy and Major Gormur just flew out to London, to being installation tomorrow (1 day ahead of schedule actually).

Isn't it funny to hear people talk about enterprise class hardware like its some build your own white box?
Update the drivers hehehe. When new drivers are available for the Blades and IBM has cleared them, they will schedule for a tech to come out and drop them in during a down time.
Any number of companies can provide you with hardware like this. You pick the one that has the service contract you like. In fact I'm sure the service contract cost as much or more than the hardware. If CCP even owns the hardware, leasing is common with this stuff.

Could it speed up the eve client and/or server?

mee sees over 1 day downtime, and then a week of buggs, lagg and crashes so you probally need a long skill.
but the hardware needs to brought up quick because I see people quiting the game since it became unplayable let alone think of defending or taking a system.

I think that theoretically the downtime shouldn't be more than the standard hour. If they've done their testing right etc, and it's been running on Sisi for a while etc, then simply updating the stuff on it/that it points to etc shouldn't be a major, and I'd be disappointed (although open to an explanation) if it pushed downtime out for more than 3-4 hours.
But of course we'd rather that that it taking 2 hours and then a week of total crapness

I belive its not about hardware. EVE had 22k ppl online before rmr, and everything worked just fine.
