I hope this is not too off topic. I've been going back and forth between destroyer and cruiser, when my cruiser get's killed in lvl 2 missions because I'm a newbie I'm back to my trusty destroyer, which I am going to stay in, through lvl 2 hopefully. I've laid off lvl 2 missions until I get more skill training to effectively use a cruiser.
Currently I run a destroyer in lvl 1 with high quality agents in low sec amassing isk.
7x 250mm 1x arbalest assault
2x regolith fs9 shield extender 1x shield booster
1x warp stab (which i have to offline and switch guns off/on when low sec) 1x shield relay
Now, please, I know this is amateurish and newbish, and I am 30 days into the game. But this setup lets me take damage and 99% of lvl 1s are a snap with this without having to 'go back.'
I have read this thread about 4 times (as well as the cruiser set up thread), and am going to read it a few more times. I am not using NOS, AB, gyro, etc probably because I'm a newbie and haven't figured out how to integrate it right. I guess I'm looking for better explanations on some of the setup's as my simple view of offense is big guns, and my simple view of defense is lots of shield HP's and being able to run away.
Any suggestions or a better thread, article, web site I should be reading, as I've learned the game the hard way by experimenting, and reading everything I can (all the player, guides, and am starting to go through fourm articles).

Only if you can web them. In general don't bother with the drones but go for the ship instead. I haven't seen my setup posted here but once you station jockey's get it right you can solo kill up to Sabre's with a thrasher.

7 X 280's in the high slot worked very well for me - I'm still trying to balance the medium and low slots. I chewed through 4 frigates in about 2 minutes without /any/ damage = cool.

If you have ISK to blow:
RIG: 2x Polycarbon Engine Housing I, 1x Auxiliary Thrusters I ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTE: I have killed 2 Sabre's and multitudes of inties with this setup. Primary problem is trying to engage AFs, I wouldn't suggest it. Unless you orbit at range and their tracking sux.

No.
I think at AWU IV you can fit the 280mm II's if you sacrifice a med slot module or two.

1x Salvager 2x Small Tractor Beam 5x 280mm Howitzer Arty II with Tremor
Med Slot:
1x Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters 1x Prototype I Sensor Booster with Targeting Range
Low Slot:
1x Reactor Control Unit I 1x Overdrive Injector System I
What you guys think ? With the sensor booster I'm shooting them from 42km away. I'm using it for missions(lvl 2) and salvaging, I made it yesterday and being able to make a good money out of it.
I'm training Energy Management 'till lvl 4 so I can use a Aux. Power Control and put a shield booster on the med slot, for emergencies and eletronics lvl 4 to have CPU for a Gyro II

Overdrive Injector System I Gyrostabilizer I
has plenty of grid and cpu left to fit all even with low skills, can fit another med shield extender instead of the booster, and can go t2 on the guns if desired -- ccp/isd, when is my portrait comming? |

Med: 1x Cap Recharger II(for the Microwarp) 1x 1MN Microwarp II, 1x Web
Low: 2x PDS II's(need the added shield recharge and cap bonus)
Sounds like a crappy build, but I find it to be in very good tradition of Minnie classical tactics; hit and run. I can get in fast, web, orbit at close range(close enough to where long-range weps are useless, and have at it. They throw drones out? Ok, target, pop, target, pop. There goes a few mill. My ammo loads consist of 4x AC's with EMP and 3x AC's with Phased Plasma. I seem to do fine, though any input is fine by me.

I'm really not clear on how people are gettig these insane ranges on weapons that in their info have less than 10KM optimal.
What support skills are you training to get a weapon wiht 10KM optimal to 30KM +? Sharpshooter by itself at 5 is only a 25% bomus to optimal range..or is there something I'm missing?

You're missing the destroyer's 50% optimal range bonus, the optimal range bonus of the ammunition used and the range bonuses from tracking enhancers and tracking computers.
280mm artillery base optimal range = 12 km Sharpshooter 4 = 20% Destroyer bonus = 50% Nuclear ammo = 40% One tracking enhancer = 15%
12 * 1.2 * 1.5 * 1.4 * 1.15 = 34.776 km
With tremor ammo (80% bonus):
12 * 1.2 * 1.5 * 1.8 * 1.15 = 44.712 km
With a second tracking enhancer on there you'll get above 50 km.

Disclaimer: i have a ton of isk and good skills so this setups is not for noobs. I've been using this for the last couple of months and have really enjoyed it.
PVE: High: 7 x 280 'Scout' Artillery 1 x 'Malkuth' Rocket Med: 1 x Pithi B-Type Shield Booster 2 x Shield Boost Amp I Lows: 1 x Gyro II 1 x Co-Pro II Rigs: 3 x CCC
First off, this setup is cap stable and can handle all damage from lvl 2's with no problems, though you may need to watch the distances involved with a few. Using Republic Fleet EMP S you can achieve over 1140 alpha and 140 dps. I find that an AB is more of a luxury than an necessity, and forgoing it allows higher damage potential and better tanking. I usually have RF EMP and RF Carbon Lead in my bay at all times. I can easily pop frigs from afar (30+ KM) then switch ammo and come in closer to finish off any cruisers. |
