Dakath	Posted - 2006.02.12 00:40:00 - [1] My favorite ship in need of a new look is the Iteron Mark V. It looks like they took 2 Iteron Mark IIIs and shoved one up the other's um, er, exhaust tubes. Also, some of the Minmatar ships are kind of unfinished. You can see hollow spaces where there should be none. What ships would you like to see have their looks improved? I, for one, welcome our new Jovian Overlords!

Culmen	Posted - 2006.02.12 02:15:00 - [11] The black bird its troubling to note that the entire ship looks like it was made by randomly hitting the exstrude command on a 3d modeler its not just assymetric, its just... random mabey thats why it's such an efficent ECMer it doesnt have to actually turn on the ECM it just needs to get a ship' sensors to actually try to make sense of the hull geometry
Turia	Posted - 2006.02.12 02:15:00 - [12] I like Minmatar ships. You can say what you want about the Caldari, but frankly, Minmatar ships look the most 'human'. Of course, I'd never fly a Minmatar ship unless drunk, so here's a rundown on the unquestioned strength-of-ugliness of the Amarr Navy: Frigates: Okay, they're frigates. Rah. Cruisers: The Omen and Arbitrator are the only passable cruisers. The Augoror obviously isn't finished being built yet, and the Maller is hands down the ugliest ship in the game - not even the vile profile of the Moa can top it. Battlecruiser: Cut the beak a bit and stretch it out, for it presently appears to be an obese pelican. Battleships: While the Apocalypse looks unfinished with a bunch of pointy whatevers sticking out of it randomly, the Armageddon is by far the coolest battleship in the game. It's a ship that warps onto a field of battle, shouts, "I'm a warship, raaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!" and proceeds to kick arse in style. In short, we can forgive the lackluster design of the Apoc, so don't waste your time here, see what you can do about the Cruiser-class ugliness.

The merlin hull is about the only one that survived the masacre. Like the Raven, almost looks cool, but one half is like smaller than the other, then you got those 2 square 'rooms' just sticking up. Moa, man lets not even go there, that things is just crazy, Kestrel, not too bad here, again though one side just intentionally messed with. Scorpion, omg don't get me started there, they just never even finished that ship apparently.

They went out of their way with every ship design to make it as ugly and 'unlikly' as possible so that no one would later come up and say "hey, that was my design in (insert date here) and I want to sue!" Some just happened to come out looking 1/2 assed decent.. the rest were 100% successes. Sorry.. but eve is not about ship design(but I REALLY wish they would do a total rehaul of ALL the damn designs in the game and let some REAL artists design the ships.. bring in a few physicists, and mathematicians, to make sure the designs would 'work' in zero gravity(or at least inside this 'fluid' space we have in eve) to make the realists (like me) a little happier. (IE: things like "That rocket there would cause that ship to spin uncontrollably, etc") Ah well.. do u think that CCP would actualy LISTEN to us though? we pay for our subscriptions..thats all they want from us.. move along now.. nothing to see here.. Jacinto Naysmith	Posted - 2006.02.12 03:41:00 - [19] The Heron and Kestrel are the best looking frigates in the game IMO, and the merlin is above avarage. The Raven has some good parts and bad parts, but the scorpion is just silly. The Ferox and Cormorant place a distant second behind the Brutix and Cyclone in the looks department IMO. Sadly all of the cruisers are horrible looking with the Caracal ranking at the top with "somewhat passable". Personally I think the Tempest and Typhoon are the best looking battleships in the game, and the Rupture is quite nice looking too.

You just can't compare the newer capital class ships, or the battlecruisers against them in terms of texture quality. Even the megathron, being one of the better looking old ships in the game, now looks a tad shoddy up close. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, the capital class ships use bump mapping to make the models look far more detailed than they actually are? Anyway, if last years fanfest was anything to go by, the devs are looking at bringing dx9 effects into the fray. Hopefully they'll look into providing an optional hi-res skin pack with it for those of us with remotely modern computers..

Given that Battleships were only in Beta for about a week before launch and during that time some obscenely small number of people managed to mine enough to buy them without resorting to the final day BS fest I would suspect that yes some of the launch ships got rushed out as CCP by this point had missed every launch date estimate they had given their then publisher. Some ships are clearly broken and do actually have some UV Mapping problems that would only take an afternoon to sort out. I'd like it if CCP just decided to fix these in one patch because tbh it isn't alot of work and if you sort out the small problems suddenly the pile of big problems doesn't seem quite as big. Housekeeping if you will. I discovered this truth in my work after I kept blowing off smaller bugs to fix the big ones. I was under way more stress because my ToDo list was huge and I never ever got to the bottom of it. Spend 1 day a week sorting out the half hour fixes and you should half your todo list and be able to concentrate on the big problems better. Some ships defy all reasonable logic. Like the Griffin. Sideways thrusters that clearly serve no purpose and above all look really dumb. I actually liked the ship in the hanger but when I took it outside the first time I was laughing so hard I fell off my chair. The same goes for the Slasher. Recent Minmattar ships like the Cyclone or Nag are lovely to look at and imo are more minmattar than the older frigates and cruisers. The slasher only has to hit 1 piece of space debris and it would just fly apart. Fortunately with all the hole sin it the odds of that happening are reduced. All the Amarr Frigs are brilliant. They have the best looking selection of Frigates of all the races. Although fix the floating wingtips of the Punisher please. The Megathron is too big for its texture and the guns were clearly added as an afterthought. The Gun placement comment goes for most of the Turret BS except the Tempest which actually has them making sense all lined up like that. The Raven is just... well there's Asymetrical and then there's just random. The Raven is the later. The Scorpion looks unfinished and is another ship that would benefit alot from a better texture even if it doesn't get a geometry overhaul. Minmattar BS I quite like in theory. The Phoon needs it's insides looking at and if you're gonna make a space Sailboat at least make it graceful and slightly smoother than the Tempest. Still great concepts though. The Bantam... just no. Cargo/mining ship and it should actually look like it's a cargo/mining ship. Which it doesn't. All the Caldari cruisers need some love. I like the concept behind the caracal if not the implementation. Same for the Blackbird. There are some very good ideas in there but the execution ruins them. I kinda like the Osprey and I think that is mostly down to the texture which is more matte black than gunmetal grey. I quite like the Gallente Cruisers and the Amarr cruisers are good. The Augoror is a great concept but needs a higher res texture and some love on it's belly. The Iteron and Badger range of Industrials are the most obvious haulers in game (in that they look how you expect a hauler to look). The Bestower is heavily outclassed by the newer sigil in looks. The Hoarder needs a better texture, with some more red in it to break up it's outline a bit. Overall I think I can get behind the concept for all the ships fully. But the older ships were clearly rushed out for launch while the newer ones have had more time and attention to detail. I think you can change the geometry of the ships without actually changing their appearance. Just rebuild them based on the same concept and overall profile and I think you'll get what most people imagine the ships to really look like. Oh and try to make sure every part of a ship has a justifiable purpose or else they do truly look random which is bad.

A good view of the ship (camera to the forward, left, looking back) hides this little thing and makes it look almost passable; but in actual practice, the ship looks incredibly off center. Defintely inspired by the x-wing fighters from Star Wars, and you gotta love the way it just floats in your hangar. I don't mind the Merlin, and the Amarr frigs are very nice looking. I absolutely love the Catalyst, and the Coercer is pretty sweet looking too. The best faction frigate is the Daredevil, with a nice combination of raw Minmatar design and smooth Gallente finish. As for the Battleships, the Apoc is butt ugly. I actually kinda like the Raven weirdly enough; it kinda grew on me. The Tempest is ugly, but appealing somehow. The Mega looks like a dustbuster, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Those things are awesome!

Sexiest ship of them all is the thron though. Looks mean, sleek, and powerful at the same time. I hope they continue on the bird-design for the amarr tier 2 bc's. Something like a SG:A wraith dart would be utterly cool.

It's the best looking ship in eve, and if you think the Megathron looks good, well, consider it's the size of five Titanics one after another and it still looks like a toaster. Actually, the update in ship design I would like is related to detail. Look at the newer hulls, like the destroyers - they have lots and lots of detail, detail that just isn't there on the older hulls. A Maller (which I kind of like) is just a simple shape with some simple textures. They should really get upgraded, maybe keep the basic shape but increase the level of detail. I mean, battleships do not look big exactly because they are plain shape with no detail and there's nothing to see there to understand how big they are. BCs, that are newer, are much better in that respect. So really, a ship look upgrade would be great - do not _modify_ them, just increase the level of detail and put nicer textures and make them look more real. Well, except Moa and Apocalypse (and Thorax btw) those please do modify. which, some might argue, it also is, toasting anything that comes close, but that's not the point.

Blob ships. Design: About as aerodynamic as a fridge from the sixties, largely very symmetrical, and tend to be built vertically. Ships: Velator, Maulus, Tristan, Vexor, Brutix, Dominix, Moros, and Erebus. Changes: While the Velator is dog-ugly, there needs be a reason to bugger out of that ship asap. The other ships are pretty decent with the exception of the Dominix. What the Dominix needs first and foremost is a skin change, preferably to the same colour theme as the Brutix. Other minor tweaks would be to loose the giant forehead which prevents the Dominix' length to show. The Mixed ships. Design: As aerodynamic as an cathedral organ, seldom very symmetric, and tend to be nearly equal horizontally and vertically. Ships: Imicus, Incursus, Exequrour, and Celestis Changes: All of these ships need to be redone. The Incursus is the least offender, but at the very least it's skin needs a change. It would break a lot of immersion for me to see some completely new model of the Blackbird with the same old description. However textures can be redone on some of those ships. Nothing radical just spiff them up a little. A lot of people hate the Raven? I think that ship and the Scorp for that matter are great! I guess the different opinions are what makes the world go 'round. My "that could of been done different" ships are: Moa Maller Celestis Dominix Typhoon Navitas Imicus Inquistitor Tormentor However, I really appreciate what CCP tried to do. They did not use the normal conventions of other Space games. They created thier own universe with their own designs. I like some of the ships that are not symetrical. In some ships I think it paid off. By the way Caldari have the best looking frigates in the game, imho.

Pirate faction vessels could also stand to lose national logos in favour of their own pirate logos. The Caldari ship models themselves are perfectly fine as is though. --------

It is sleek, it looks powerful and has a nice cruisery feeling to it. But if you zoom in on the err.. tip of it, you'll see that the windows up front are just messed up. The rest of it is ok. It just that last bit, that wasn't executed properly. I also think the omen has way more potential. It's multiple layers of armor look like they don't fit and the skins on the undersides of its engines are just offending. Mutant space turtles 4TW!......
