My two isk here as a less than month old player.
I've been playing pvp mmpogs since they first sort of raised their head with games like trade wars on my 1200 baud modem on BBS's. I have a lot of experiance with these kind of games, plus I've always enjoyed 'space' as a theme and have played all the games such as homeworld to death.
As such the PvE aspect of eve is mindnumblingly easy. Eve does have a steep learning curve but its not THAT steep, and after a few weeks, you should know what you are doing if you read the forums and check out the guides. With less than a million sps I'm able to do every level III I've tried so far, and many don't even dent the shields. Money isn't difficult, and I haven't had any help with ships or cash to speak of that made a big difference. That part is just dull.
What I love about EvE though is the PVP aspect and the concept of player controlled empires etc. Thats masterfuly done, and thats the game I want to play. This is also where I get a little disapointed in what I can do. No matter what my personal skills are in playing, my character skills will always be lacking to anyone who focused on combat before me. There is really no way for me to 'catch up'. Now yes sooner or later I'll be able to beat vets who have more skill points because my player skills and such will be enough to overcome that gap, but any vet who is close to me in pvp skills will wipe the floor with me due to sp's.
What this leaves me with is zerg tactics. More cannon fodder in t1 frigs to bodly die so the main forces can do the damage.
More starting skills really don't matter that much, if I started with more guns, missles, whatever it would save a few weeks maybe of skill points. (plus its a good way to learn the game if you start with so little) What has me looking at the cold hard facts is when someone says they have 6 million skill points in guns, and I'm looking at 5-6 months to get there, and that doesn't include the fact they have BS5, T2 drones, and adv this and that, so even if my guns were equal my mounting and damages would still be way off.
There comes a point where people need to 'max out' and perhaps eve's max point is whats set too high. You could argue that you can get close with level 4's etc prety easy and you would be correct, but things like 10% that, 5% this, 3% that all add up to 100% better and you in your pod.
So for now I'm in the zerg, and I'd expect to be, being so new to the game, but the question is when can you leave the zerg and not loose to someone by default who has been watching their skillpoint ticker flash longer.
I can understand some who have 30 million sps not wanting to give up any of that advantage, but as a game like this matures some concessions need to be made. If you have that many skill points you will always be able to do 'more' than a newer player, but at some point the games gotta give and say 'ok you guys are equal if you are both in this set up' and let your playing skills and organization be the difference.
Maybe in 6 months I'll have a different opinion on this, but thats how it appears to me now.
