This is another one of those "what not to do" tutorials for those of you dumb enough to think of something like our bored corporation did.
First off, if you band up in a gang of 16 people and all leap into shuttles, grab about 100 units of tritanium and go out to a core Empire trading system and then upon a freighter warping to a gate, you ram the freighter from all sides and drop cans around it thus making it unable to really go anywhere, it's basicly stuck.
This works in 0.0 or lowsec systems if you are lucky to spot a bloody freighter in space and you want to keep it from getting to a gate or warping off until you get a party able to wreck the freighter.
HOWEVER, performing this act in highsec space or basicly in an empire prime trade route, it files into the category of "gate blocking", which, you are not allowed to do.
Our gang figured that out the hard way (which is partly why I'm posting this here).
It was lovely Valentine's Day, the sweet 14th of Febuary when our gang of bored nerds (me included) were all around Empire space trying to think of something to do. One of us, suggests we perform a "Shuttle Op". This, being new, we're all up for the idea. It involves messing with people (primarily macrominers or afk miners) in shuttles. Well, we quickly get bored of that. As we approuch the next gate, one of us spots a Freighter approuching the gate... It takes forever to get to the gate and jump out, mainly with all it's low agility. .....Evil ideas come to mind. So then, we wonder, as we watch a ship get caught up on a cargo can that maybe... A freighter... We all go and grab 100 units of tritanium and put it in our holds, we warp all to the gate in all our shuttles and wait. A freighter pops up. We engage, we all ram him but really just go "boink!" on it's hull, we can't seem to knock it about. 2nd step, we deployed cargo cans around it and continued to ram it as it tried to move around it. We open a private channel and ask for like... 0.10isk-1,000,000isk to support the Girl Scout "Nohauling" Act of 2006. Since the things were worth much more, costed much more, we weren't concered of the isk, we more were just laughing left and right for countless hours doing this. We did this to about 3 other freighters before we noticed one thing. It was about three hours later that our gang lead suddently disappeared from sight. He claimed he was slightly lagged and he claimed he found himself nearlly 20 jumps from where we were just then. A sudden warp to another system? Another one of us disappears... 2 of us disappear... 3... Only one thing could have caused such an event. I felt the sky above me thunder and as if God himself spoke the words, it dawned on us. I began yelling in local, "GM ATTACK!!! AAAAAUuuuuuugghhh!!! Run! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! THE GMs GOT US ALL, Nooooooo!!!!" By now, we all split, we all run but there is no hope... GM Swoosh was kind enough to let us know too. GM Sw00sh (on the local channel): "Don't run. I'll move you." Noooooooooooo.....*POP*
I appear in Pator, like, 23 jumps away. I got a nice little mail too from the event from Sw00sh stating that what we were doing was violating the rules and was considered "gate blocking". We didn't know this, we didn't expect any of that to happen, let alone interaction with a GM in local... Amazing. I was tempted to contact Sw00sh for giggles and laughs but... We weren't exactly sure if we were going to be banned for eternity or so from the event.
So please note, despite this story and the thought of petitons stating pirating shuttles in highsec space vs. freighters and winning is hilarious, the concept is wrong and noted by the other GMs for future use. So, future people performing it may not get off as easy as we did.
However... Hopefully we were dumb enough to be the first ones to try it, maybe put a new entry in the rulebook. We got lots of pictures off it too and even a few Fraps clips.
And it is a hilarious story... ___ _"Akkubai Angels" - Book 1 of My EVE Novel_ |

Lucky not to have been deposited at the far end of 0.0 in your shuttle.
This sort of pointless idiotic griefing is what has ruined many MMORPGs.
The GM did right; in fact IMHO it wasn't harsh enough.

Seems like if you cleaned up your cans after each freighter, and then did it again to the next one, it would be a valid tactic to ransom freighters in empire.
But if you just left a wall of cans out there, yeah, that would be a problem.
Is it just me or do frieghters have a big "COME MESS WITH ME" sign painted on them?
But realistically, you probably did this in a hub system, and anything goes to prevent lag, I guess. -- My drones are about as smart as a smartbomb. |

would this tactic be legal if you were in war with the targets corp ?
( should work better then warpscrambling :P )

Nice story, sounds pretty funny! Please post the fraps vids, I gotta see this.
I don't really understand why this is a violation that required GMs, however. It's just players having a bit of fun with the game mechanics. If it had been me in that frieghter, I think I would have been laughing so hard I would have paid you just for the comedy value...

That can spamming incedent was somewhat amusing, but it's been done before..
What it really amounts to is making it a pain in the ass for certain high sec highway pilots.. Which I guess was your goal. Which is fine by me, I could care less about that. What kind of sucks about it though, is that GM Swoosh had to go and play space janitor for a bit, when he/she could of been doing something more important. I think to only thing worse than this are people who petition spam (same people who act like internet lawyers :D)
Besides there are much more entertaining things to do, if you are really that bored, grab some cheap ships and go terrorize miners in lowsec.
My domi is pretty ugly It's tech II drones do the deed. And that thorax ramming me fits oh so snugly. I surely hope this poem made your ears bleed. |

Personally I don't see a problem with shaking down a freighter for ISK. They don't like it then they can use instas, or is that an exploit also? Anybody hear of escorts? Most folks with a freighter can afford friends. Pull the cans and rumble if you don't freaking like it.
Seems like anything you do in 0.5 and up is an exploit or grief if it someone doesn't like it. You can suicide gank people but not stop a freighter? jeez people.

Kill list on an alt account so what, Freighter pilot can War Dec anybody not in a noob corp, OP included. Noone in a freighter is a noob or broke, they don't need CCP to baby sit them through empire. If a bunch of tards want to hang up a freighter and ransom I say rock on. It takes alot more time, effort and team work then ganking miners in low sec.

Wouldn't this work as an odd way to hold someone in space? Do it in a 0.0 Zone with a Pirate.
When you have the Freighter "Held" ransom them. If they don't pay, have your pirate hit em and blow em.
If it's co-ordinated right, it could be a PvP tactic. Low risk as all you risk is a shuttle, and a Can of Trit. 10 Shuttles, and say a BS for damage.

To the OP:
Actually, imho the tactic you describe was an exploit, i.e. using game mechanics to advantage. If the target was really flying a freighter (with a mass of about a million tonnes and shields and armour better than a battleship) he would just keep going and bulldoze your cans and tin-can shuttles out of the way. Probably effortlessly destroying both in the process.
But because the game doesn't allow for collisions having any effect, you got away with it until another game mechanic (the GM using his godlike powers) did you in.
You were lucky not to get banned. Actions can and do have consequences. Deal with it.

DADDY ATTACK !!!
I thought it was a nice little story and prolly a right laugh on TS as well as you watch those Cearbear Bohemoths flownder around like beached whales
It reminds me of when there was the shieva patch a while ago and you could bump things for miles...Picture this...
Ring of Mining barges around 2-3 cans like a wild west wagon train to protect from ore thieves and then a shuttle casualy positions itself about 15-20 past them in line with a station. The Barges "close ranks" expecting a hauler to come and try and nick their ore and instead an Apoc warps in and skittles them MILES in all directions. HAHAHAHAHA We got a warning for that one too.
And as far as "In RL It would do so and so..." goes.....Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I personally found this quite hilarious. If you can't see the comedy in doing something like this, you either take EVE way too seriously, or desperately need a sense of humour. If I was in that Freighter I probably would have be laffing my a** off. And I would have given the "pirates" a bonus for doing something like that. It would have made my day.

heh, simply awesome really.
But it just makes me yearn for the day CCP makes size matter, so that when I'm MWDing in my keesy, going 2km/s, when I run into a CAN, it goes flying off instead of me bouncing off it like a tennis ball hitting a brick wall.
