What is smacktalk?
Sometimes smack is the last form of offense used by people that cant accomplish their goals by any other means.
Sometimes its a verbal expression of an immature playstyle.
Sometimes smacktalk is a legitimate form of psychological warfare, though very, very, few people in this game employ this form well (IMO).
No matter what a smacktalker intends it to be, it is almost always lame.
I prefer hate eve mails, personally, they make me and my corp m8's laugh.

Yet very little about this game is socially acceptable.
From killing people, to stealing from them, there are few aspects about this game which 'in the real world' would be acceptable.
So making judgements based around whats socially acceptable, is kind of a moot point.
As for defending my actions, im not trying to defend what I type in local to anyone, hell if you hadnt worked it out already by what I say to you in local, I realy dont care what you think of me.
What I was doing was trying to provide some of the brighter amongst us, an understanding of why I say what I say.

There's a limit to what you can say in-game. If it qualifies as harassment, such as saying "I am going to find out where you live, come to your house and cut out your <bleep>ing eyes." or repeating "FKING QUIT THE GAME YOU U+FKING LOSER", it's against the rules and can net you a ban if you repeatedly do it.
But you're absolutely right that there is a subtle tactical use of "smacktalk" in enraging an enemy to make them think less than rationally. You have to b really careful not to cross the boundary into harassing and insulting, though. In that case, it only loosely fits the term smacktalk, if at all.

I think there's one point people are missing. Smacktalk is also sometimes a stress relief valve.
Honestly, it's easy to smack talk in an impersonal forum like this or the game. To someone playing, thereÆs really no face behind the avatar.
Work in any kind of sales, telemarketing field, or even at a restaurant and youÆll see similar behavior crop up from unhappy customers.
I donÆt mind a certain level of smack talk. Heck, with my friends we talk smack to one another every day thatÆd probably get us banned from most gaming forums if we were to do it there. ItÆs more of a friendly competition than anything else.
Overall, if you donÆt like smack talk, donÆt engage in it. If you donÆt want to read it, simply minimize local. If you need to communicate with people without reading smack talk thatÆs going in local, make a new chat window.

Most people cannot dispense smack in a classy way and those who can will find the reciever not grasping what is being said.

well im not going to say that smacktalk is mature, but damn is it funny as hell sometimes. telling someone in local "wow youre a month old and you still suck this bad." is not really as funny, youre just degrading them, although i can see the psycological effect. but when theres 2 teams of ganksquads trying to get at each other in some 0.0 region, its fun and amusing. btw ive heard w0rmy on ts and hes a nice mature british man, hes just trying to say that smacktalk isnt always psychos or 15 year olds speaking in leet.
ps im engaged with RA atm, and im pretty sure most of them dont mind the "For Mother Russia!"s that are said in local when engaging.

Edited by: Evil Edna on 15/02/2006 23:27:06 personally i have no problem with smacktalk at all, either in giving it out or recieving it
it makes for stronger rivalrys which in turn makes the pvp more exciting.
killing/fighting random people is fun, but it is FAR more satisfying to win a fight against someone where there is a history of antagonism between the two of you.
and smacktalk done well can be very funny

Your homework, child, is to distinguish between "etiquette" and "law". No smacktalk is a rule of etiquette, just like table manners. There's no statute telling you to eat with a fork instead of stuffing your face like a pig, it's just the way civilized people conduct themselves, and you'll only look like an idiot by telling people "If you don't like it, look away".
Same thing with trash talking in Local.

Double standards much?
If you blow up a guy's ship, ofcourse he'll be mad. Now ofcourse there's a difference between "I'm gonna kill you you **** **** ***** ****er" and "That was my favorite ship you bastard" but it's no less civilized than armed warfare :)

You can argue that not blowing stuff up or holding ppl at gunpoint for ransom is also a rule of etiquette :D

My friends, from one human to another, smack talk isn't about mutual enjoyment. It's selfish and shallow, some of you would argue "well, that's life", and so it is. Then consider trying to balance yourself to a point that you do not become affected by it, easier said than done and it's a hell of a lot harder than fighting fire with fire. The difference is, however, that it actually leads somewhere, it takes you outside that circle of repetition so you can get on with your own life.
Wars have been started for less and smacktalk is a sign that one's emotional investment has gone far too deep. This game, while it represents another reality is not where you are at the moment so please take responsibility for how you think and keep in mind that all of this is sport, why not be sporting about it?
I'm not going to talk about virtue as it'd deserve more than a simple reply like this but consider the concept of honour (yes, brit spelling) and how it can make the game more enjoyable for you whilst keeping your head out of the sand at the same time.
Stay balanced people.

Edited by: Rowgue on 15/02/2006 23:58:32 I've seen these types of debates in every online game forum I've ever been on.
It amazes me that people still think posting a topic like this for debate will elicit intelligent and coherent dialouge.
When there's an issue such as this with two clearly defined "sides" it always boils down to the same things repeated over and over since the beggining of online games. The side that doesn't like it will try to point out how said tactic/behavior is not right in their eyes. And the side that engages in said tactics/behavior will defend it by saying the other side is carebears.
Bottom line is that it's a fruitless topic and will only serve to breed animosity and disgust in the community. Everyone who's played a fair amount of online games knows that eventually they all get to the point where debate over issues like this gets to the point of absurdity and often times ends up changing game mechanics for the worse to keep it from going any further. |

Smacktalking are done by stupid, immature, 12 year brats that are being bullied in real life, and finally got a place where they can use a foul language, and laugh at others without getting their *censored due to foul language* kicked
And yeah, such kids usually play pierats here... Not surprised CEO/Fleet Admiral Commander Hansen |

No, Im sorry, that wasn't fair I must admit. I have nothing against a pirate, as long as he can act respectable. I know, pirates wasnt the most respectable people around, but anyway. Smacking is childish

Good smackfests are a lot of fun (particularly when its a blob war or station camp and both sides are bored), the only problem is half the time people start going on and on about age and/or sexual identity which gets very old very fast. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 16/02/2006 01:02:17 Edited by: Snake Jankins on 16/02/2006 00:59:01 In rare situations answering to smack talk can be fun, e.g. if someone said something and you have that funny response in your head that 'must' be said. But usually smack lets you look stupid or even weak. If you play the game with the means that are meant to be used and neither have to smack when your are winning, nor when you have lost, it shows some strength and maturity. If a gang mate is smack talking to an enemy, then I'm rating that smack too by asking subcontiously questions like: 'What if he said that to me ?', 'How well does it fit to the situation ?' 'Is it funny ?' etc. And then I notice, how silly most smacktalk is and I think that keeps me from smacktalking myself. *edit* I don't like, if mates are smack talking in a stupid not funny way, since it let's me look stupid, too. So I'm usually for a no smack policy, except someone has something really funny/cool to say. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |
