It's not classy, it makes you look bad as a pirate or a bad sport if a victim. I got blown up last night by Ginger Magician and was nothing but polite.

No mate. Very often smacktalk is abuse. and at the very best I've seen is just on the border, you might be different, but I've never seen "nice" smacktalk. it just has an internet name. Or you might say smacktalk is a slightly watered down version of abuse...
abuse is also there to get people angry so they make mistakes / goaded into attacking someone in real life so the "defender" can say he beat the stuffing out of someone in selfdefence. Its still not nice.

Ah, Smack talk. Isn't it funny how people justify putting down other people? It is often seen as an immature response to a undesriable outcome. Social psychologists often explain smack talk as a means of lashing out in an attempt to assuage one's own ego. With teenagers, it is often the first line of defense. No surprise there since talking is on the high priority list of new experiences as budding young adults are finding their voice (i.e. independence). With adults, its the last line of defense unless they've never matured beyond name-calling.
Of course, to teenagers this is completely acceptable behavior--that and fighting it out. Why is that? Because that is where they are in their maturity level. There is no trying to get around it. Adults will regress to that line of behavior if all other acceptable behaviors have been attempted or not able to be executed.
Ultimately, putting down another individual is a social taboo. In almost all societies it is seen as an overt act of aggression if a person smacktalks after successfully winning a confrontation. Contrary, smacktalk after an unsuccessful confrontation as seen as an attempt to restore a shattered ego by trying to make the victor seem less than admirable ("So sitting 200Km off a gate and shooting people make you feel like a man, princess?") or justify the victory with conditions that seem hardly acceptable ("Let me see you try that when Im in a Raven and not my Indy").
In answer to the question, It is looked down upon because it is assumed that the player is an adult. Adults are not expected to handle confrontation with smacktalk (or fighting for that matter). They are expected to handle the situation within the confines of social accepted behavior. If the confrontation was unprovoked, the victim should be able to call the police and let justice prevail. If someone was out done in a fair mutually consented confrontation, he should admit defeat and move on--at least that's the way social constructs paint the picture. In reality however, we justify our behaviors with mental scripts (or schemas) that have been rehearsed since our teenage years. Since this is a game prone to violence to begin with, we all come into the game expecting to win any confrontation (naturally so, aside for the manic-depressives, who plays a game to lose?) When a confrontation is lost, the player who gloats obviously needs to assuage his own ego ("Look at me. I kick butt! My mommy says I can color in the lines and everything!") The player who looses assauges his ego by justifying the victory since he can't call the police and have him arrested (as we do in RL but then again there is Concord).
