Actually some smack talk can be fun to read.
When some acne infected teenager types 'YOU ***********GOT HOMO *****ES' in local then its not that fun though.
But when someone talks smack 'ultimate ownage style' it can be fun.

Oh ho! I have defeated your INKREDABLE LOGIK TRAP.
Human interaction doesn't equal "being a jerk 24/7". Some level of discourse is necessary, and smacktalk is below it.

No mate. Very often smacktalk is abuse. and at the very best I've seen is just on the border, you might be different, but I've never seen "nice" smacktalk. it just has an internet name. Or you might say smacktalk is a slightly watered down version of abuse...
abuse is also there to get people angry so they make mistakes / goaded into attacking someone in real life so the "defender" can say he beat the stuffing out of someone in selfdefence. Its still not nice.

Ah, Smack talk. Isn't it funny how people justify putting down other people? It is often seen as an immature response to a undesriable outcome. Social psychologists often explain smack talk as a means of lashing out in an attempt to assuage one's own ego. With teenagers, it is often the first line of defense. No surprise there since talking is on the high priority list of new experiences as budding young adults are finding their voice (i.e. independence). With adults, its the last line of defense unless they've never matured beyond name-calling.
Of course, to teenagers this is completely acceptable behavior--that and fighting it out. Why is that? Because that is where they are in their maturity level. There is no trying to get around it. Adults will regress to that line of behavior if all other acceptable behaviors have been attempted or not able to be executed.
Ultimately, putting down another individual is a social taboo. In almost all societies it is seen as an overt act of aggression if a person smacktalks after successfully winning a confrontation. Contrary, smacktalk after an unsuccessful confrontation as seen as an attempt to restore a shattered ego by trying to make the victor seem less than admirable ("So sitting 200Km off a gate and shooting people make you feel like a man, princess?") or justify the victory with conditions that seem hardly acceptable ("Let me see you try that when Im in a Raven and not my Indy").
In answer to the question, It is looked down upon because it is assumed that the player is an adult. Adults are not expected to handle confrontation with smacktalk (or fighting for that matter). They are expected to handle the situation within the confines of social accepted behavior. If the confrontation was unprovoked, the victim should be able to call the police and let justice prevail. If someone was out done in a fair mutually consented confrontation, he should admit defeat and move on--at least that's the way social constructs paint the picture. In reality however, we justify our behaviors with mental scripts (or schemas) that have been rehearsed since our teenage years. Since this is a game prone to violence to begin with, we all come into the game expecting to win any confrontation (naturally so, aside for the manic-depressives, who plays a game to lose?) When a confrontation is lost, the player who gloats obviously needs to assuage his own ego ("Look at me. I kick butt! My mommy says I can color in the lines and everything!") The player who looses assauges his ego by justifying the victory since he can't call the police and have him arrested (as we do in RL but then again there is Concord).

What is smacktalk?
Sometimes smack is the last form of offense used by people that cant accomplish their goals by any other means.
Sometimes its a verbal expression of an immature playstyle.
Sometimes smacktalk is a legitimate form of psychological warfare, though very, very, few people in this game employ this form well (IMO).
No matter what a smacktalker intends it to be, it is almost always lame.
I prefer hate eve mails, personally, they make me and my corp m8's laugh.

Yet very little about this game is socially acceptable.
From killing people, to stealing from them, there are few aspects about this game which 'in the real world' would be acceptable.
So making judgements based around whats socially acceptable, is kind of a moot point.

Care to point that out in the rules?
There's a limit to what you can say in-game. If it qualifies as harassment, such as saying "I am going to find out where you live, come to your house and cut out your <bleep>ing eyes." or repeating "FKING QUIT THE GAME YOU U+FKING LOSER", it's against the rules and can net you a ban if you repeatedly do it.
But you're absolutely right that there is a subtle tactical use of "smacktalk" in enraging an enemy to make them think less than rationally. You have to b really careful not to cross the boundary into harassing and insulting, though. In that case, it only loosely fits the term smacktalk, if at all.

I think there's one point people are missing. Smacktalk is also sometimes a stress relief valve.
Honestly, it's easy to smack talk in an impersonal forum like this or the game. To someone playing, thereÆs really no face behind the avatar.
Work in any kind of sales, telemarketing field, or even at a restaurant and youÆll see similar behavior crop up from unhappy customers.
I donÆt mind a certain level of smack talk. Heck, with my friends we talk smack to one another every day thatÆd probably get us banned from most gaming forums if we were to do it there. ItÆs more of a friendly competition than anything else.
Overall, if you donÆt like smack talk, donÆt engage in it. If you donÆt want to read it, simply minimize local. If you need to communicate with people without reading smack talk thatÆs going in local, make a new chat window.

well im not going to say that smacktalk is mature, but damn is it funny as hell sometimes. telling someone in local "wow youre a month old and you still suck this bad." is not really as funny, youre just degrading them, although i can see the psycological effect. but when theres 2 teams of ganksquads trying to get at each other in some 0.0 region, its fun and amusing. btw ive heard w0rmy on ts and hes a nice mature british man, hes just trying to say that smacktalk isnt always psychos or 15 year olds speaking in leet.

Your homework, child, is to distinguish between "etiquette" and "law". No smacktalk is a rule of etiquette, just like table manners. There's no statute telling you to eat with a fork instead of stuffing your face like a pig, it's just the way civilized people conduct themselves, and you'll only look like an idiot by telling people "If you don't like it, look away".

Nobody needs to TELL you to eat with a fork instead of stuffing your face like a pig, it's just the way things are, and you'll only look like an idiot by telling people "If you don't like it, look away".
Same thing with trash talking in Local.

You can argue that not blowing stuff up or holding ppl at gunpoint for ransom is also a rule of etiquette :D

My friends, from one human to another, smack talk isn't about mutual enjoyment. It's selfish and shallow, some of you would argue "well, that's life", and so it is. Then consider trying to balance yourself to a point that you do not become affected by it, easier said than done and it's a hell of a lot harder than fighting fire with fire. The difference is, however, that it actually leads somewhere, it takes you outside that circle of repetition so you can get on with your own life.
Wars have been started for less and smacktalk is a sign that one's emotional investment has gone far too deep. This game, while it represents another reality is not where you are at the moment so please take responsibility for how you think and keep in mind that all of this is sport, why not be sporting about it?
I'm not going to talk about virtue as it'd deserve more than a simple reply like this but consider the concept of honour (yes, brit spelling) and how it can make the game more enjoyable for you whilst keeping your head out of the sand at the same time.
Stay balanced people.

Edited by: Rowgue on 15/02/2006 23:58:32 I've seen these types of debates in every online game forum I've ever been on.
It amazes me that people still think posting a topic like this for debate will elicit intelligent and coherent dialouge.
When there's an issue such as this with two clearly defined "sides" it always boils down to the same things repeated over and over since the beggining of online games. The side that doesn't like it will try to point out how said tactic/behavior is not right in their eyes. And the side that engages in said tactics/behavior will defend it by saying the other side is carebears.
Bottom line is that it's a fruitless topic and will only serve to breed animosity and disgust in the community. Everyone who's played a fair amount of online games knows that eventually they all get to the point where debate over issues like this gets to the point of absurdity and often times ends up changing game mechanics for the worse to keep it from going any further. |

Good smackfests are a lot of fun (particularly when its a blob war or station camp and both sides are bored), the only problem is half the time people start going on and on about age and/or sexual identity which gets very old very fast. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 16/02/2006 01:02:17 Edited by: Snake Jankins on 16/02/2006 00:59:01 In rare situations answering to smack talk can be fun, e.g. if someone said something and you have that funny response in your head that 'must' be said. But usually smack lets you look stupid or even weak. If you play the game with the means that are meant to be used and neither have to smack when your are winning, nor when you have lost, it shows some strength and maturity. If a gang mate is smack talking to an enemy, then I'm rating that smack too by asking subcontiously questions like: 'What if he said that to me ?', 'How well does it fit to the situation ?' 'Is it funny ?' etc. And then I notice, how silly most smacktalk is and I think that keeps me from smacktalking myself. *edit* I don't like, if mates are smack talking in a stupid not funny way, since it let's me look stupid, too. So I'm usually for a no smack policy, except someone has something really funny/cool to say. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

There are certainly different levels of 'smacktalk'. There is the good old in character goading. In Starfleet Command you even had smacktalking hot keys. You'd hit the key and your opponent would hear (in my case) a Klingon commander announce:
"Amazing, you must have studied hard to become so incompetent"
or
"I love the glow of a ravaged ship against the stars"
Plus a few others. Nothing offensive, just a bit of colour to the game. Even a simple "Hello Matari" in local can add something to a scrap (you know who you are ) although I wouldn't even class that as goading, a distraction at most. All good fun.
When it gets insulting in an OOC way then I reckon it has gone too far. Swearing and RL threats are banned from local for good reason. Some folks let their kids play Eve with them and when keeping an eye on local they don't want to hear your opinions on somebodies mothers mating habits.
Personally I avoid smacktalk (okay, except macro miners - I'm not perfect) but IC goading done well can add something special to a game. The sad part is that one turns very quickly into the other so in Eve I don't bother with it. Just a 'gf' and if the smack starts up a quick right click - block.

Try to lighten up! At the end of the day if you are too serious about life, you are heading for a mid-life crisis - peroxide hair doesn't go well with wrinkles. A bit of smack talk never hurt anyone. Losing a ship is far more annoying than being called names.
Its always the serious ones whining about people being stupid and immature. I call it roleplaying, and I'm only playing this game so i can behave like a jackass half the time.
I mean perhaps the ones so serious about a game perhaps don't have enough serious activity in their real life? I mean when i come home from work and being nice to imbeciles on the phone and in emails out of professional courtesy, the last hing i want to do is be polite to some insecure numpti camping on a gate with 10 buddies of like-mind. Usually i never get caught but that doesnt stop me from hurling insults and taunts at the anal retentive gatecamping sorts.
I have a real life for being clever and mature, and I have computer games to escape all that. Its not like i just hurl insults at anything that moves, but if i fell like insulting someone I damn well will.
All these people live out in low sec space, fighting huge wars over territory, ganking sniping spying and all the other nasty tactics eve introduces, and you want a nice clean chat window. Seems rediculous to me, seems like a serious anachronism is contained within that point of view. The same kind of anachronism of putting swear filters on a game like counterstrike where the sole purpose is to shoot people in the head.
Perhaps if my smack talk and that of others is so offensive to you, you should consider a nice civilised game of yahoo chess instead. Or to be ultra safe, and in keeping with the Sci-Fi theme I would recommend a nice single player game like space invaders. However if you want to play with other people, within reason you are gonna have to accept they might choose to use nasty words in your presence, or even be downright insulting. You calling their behaviour stupid and immature just makes me thing you are a young soul yourself; or if not you take life and the game too seriously for your own good.

You pay your sub same as me. If Eve is your way of blowing off steam at complete stangers over the net because your boss gave you a hard time for stacking shopping trollys wrong thats your call.
I think I speak for most parents here when I ask you to keep it clean in local. If I don't want to hear your insults I'll block you. I will refuse convo requests from you and all the rest. If you start hurling insults in local then it's straight to the F12 key.
Witty banter, in character jibes, harmless goading. All these things are fine but when you stoop to hurling personal insults in a public channel you have gone too far. Gatecampers are a part of Eve and they are playing the game. Trolls mouthing off in local about peoples heritage and / or sexual preferences are way down the food chain from them.

Telemicus I think you misunderstand:
I am not blowing off frustration at strangers. Its not about me having a bad day at work. Often I am at my most offensive when i come home from work in a great mood, and just dont feel like talking to anyone if i'm in a foul mood.
The fact of the matter is people are willing to grief and deal with taboo subjects when presented in particular forms, and yet totally unwilling to be on the receiving end when it is in the form of a personal insult or swear word. Get a little perspective perhaps?
Nothing makes my day like hearing a grown man ***** and whine about he's 'gonna tell the GMs (daddy)' on me cos I happened to break his e-bubble of online self satisfaction with a lame insult. Like i said, if you can't handle the more offensive side of people's personality then maybe pacman is a better game for you. If you have to run crying to the GMs everytime you see a naughty word, and yet see no problem with obliterating months of people's hard work within that same game then perhaps you need to take a reality check.
Don't you see the anachronism in sitting around on a gate or hunting someone who has nothing to do with you and wants nothing to do with you, yet complaining the first time you see a swear word. why do people hunt or pirate or pvp in general? For the thrill of the kill. Griefing without words is OK to almost any degree. Yet utter a swear word and your in trouble? Nothing wrong with pirate fleet (as it was beuatifully described in another thread) "picking the wings of flies for amusement", but call the wrong person a ****yhead and thats it the rattle is well and truly out of the pram. Rediculous.
So its ok 'to kill' but its not ok to swear. You can handle battle tactics and all the deep implications of attrocity and bloodshed that go hand in hand with such military ideas, but you can't handle a few cuss words. Utterly rediculous.
I mean as if people fighting in deep space wouldnt swear and cuss at each other? Thats in-character for you. A personal insult is the least of your worries with 10 torpedoes bearing down on you.
So if i feel like it i will continue to be grossly offensive to anyone I choose until the day I am banned for it, which will never ever happen. If it offends you that much maybe you should just grow a pair.
If people can't handle a bit of smack talk they should play a game that doesn't have such a heavy emphasis on 'killing' other players and groups of players, if they don't want to sound like unbalanced pedantic tossers when bringing up issues about swearing and personal insults.

'killing' somebodies Knight in a game of chess, cornering the market in a game of Monotony or blowing up somebodies ship in a 'puter game. That's just a game. Streaming off foul insults in a public chat channel for all and sundry to read is wrong, it's also against the rules of Eve. If you have a problem with that perhaps you should go back to being the big man in GTA.
This is a game, a hobby. One I like to share with those close to me. I don't want them subjected to the purile excuse for abuse that you seem to think makes you a man. "Ok to kill but not to swear", it's a game troll. Nobody is really dying. Get some perspective. Eve is a PvP game if you can't handle that and need to spout off the abuse when you get pwned perhaps you need to take a break, eat your spinach and grow a pair. Sound familiar?
"Don't you see the anachronism in sitting around on a gate or hunting someone who has nothing to do with you and wants nothing to do with you, yet complaining the first time you see a swear word." PvP, hunting other players, thats all part of the game. There are no atrocities here. You may as well put everyone at your local Magic tournament up for war crimes with that childish logic. If you want to swear, or threaten folks with RL stuff you will be petitioned. You see, this is a game. It has rules.
I can handle more verbal abuse than your feeble mind can come up with. I am not always the only person viewing this screen. Keeping your abuse out of local seems like a fair request. If by some quirk of fate you find a woman drunk or unconcious enough to bear you children and you don't run straight for the hills you may one day, maybe, understand.
As it stands you are just a troll, go back under your bridge.

These whingers are often massive hypocrites, it usually doesn't take long for it all to shine through.
Telemicus, what has all your whinging changed? Absolutely nothing that you would want.
If anything you are now more a target for this sort of behavious than ever before.
Having kids does not justify your position or make you mature. As council estates and trailer parks prove without doubt, you don't need brains to have kids or maturity. In fact even dogs can have offsrping or anything else upon which the sun rises. They don't necesasrily lead to some form of growth as a person, as many pram wielding maniacs seem to think.
Furthermore, it is your responsibility to keep your brats away from offensive content not mine, so petition all you like it wont change a damn thing. Why don't you take them outside and play in the park with them if you are so worried about it all? Instead of whining to me that your kids can see you my rude comments.
A truly mature and sensible person would understand that forum arguments rarely solve this kind of problem, and engaging in this debate really doesnt server your purposes whatsoever, unless of course you are arguing for argument's sake: which would just be your hypocrisy showing through again. I dont claim to be truly mature and sensible, whereas you have alluded that you are. You honestly can't win this argument because by your own standards you shouldnt even be here.
As for my 'childish' logic - you don't need actual bloodshed or attrocity for certain destructive ideas to be formed. People who get all het up about swear words really need to learn how to ignore people they don't like - which after all is the mature christian thing to do. The whole idea of ganging up and using overwhelming force on an opponent is rather unsporting and unwarranted.
I would far rather my child had a pottymouth than was constantly scheming how he could 'win' or 'destroy' in an unsporting and dishonourable way (as many people in eve constantly like to do). One has far deeper implications than the other. However cartoonised the principles of war may be in EVE, the underlying sentiment remains. Whether you see it or not it is there, and it is worse sentiment to constantly carry in your head than a few words which only have a meaning when gauged against other people's reaction to them.
Are you the kind of guy who won't let his kids watch termionator because of the swearing, or is it the routine and casual violence that bothers you? Is it the sentiment that other people are 100% expendable to achieve your own ends that offends you or some arbitrary combination of letters?
Honestly look deep my man.

There are many different kinds of smack. Some of them are acceptable, most aren't.
For instance, when we fought a war with PIE, they used to smack us all the time. But they did it IN CHARACTER. That means they'd call me a minmater dog and stuff like that. It was funny, and it was in character, and I loved it.
But the typical smacker has no style and the smack is usually directed towards out of game content which is no fun.
I have a strick no-smack policy in my corp. The onlything that is allowed is a brief rebuttal to smack. It IS only a game, but holding yourself or your corp members to a higher standard than the general eve population will make your corp more respected and it will probably improve the enjoyment you receive from the game.
Besides, nobody likes smack. I treat EVE like I would any sport. The best atheletes always relay on performance to do the talking for them, the ones that try to rely on smack are lame.

So you get to judge what is 'in-character' and what is 'out-of-character' for other people do you? How do you know what their character is supposed to be? What a load of nonsense. Either accept smack or don't which you clearly don't, but don't try and give it legitimacy in some forms and not others.
My point still stands that if people don't want to be called names, or want some sanitised reality in which they can escape to, then they should probably play a game which doesn't involve other human beings.
I think any insult i choose to wield could be considered in-character. ANd people who basically say smack talk is ok until it reaches a point where it offends me.... Well you can't have your cake and eat it. Either go against smack or go with it, but there's nothing worse than a yellow-bellied fence-sitter.
Nothing anyone could write in an eve chat channel could seriously offend me. I am an example to you all.

Ali was a great boxer and he was also very well versed in the smacktalk.

No, they don't. The only purpose threads like this serve is to bait some of the more purile smack talkers out into the open. Once there they can be added to block lists before they get the chance to threaten people with sexual assault or slate peoples race, parentage etc in game. Call it a pre-emptive smack attack.
If you get so worked up about losing a ship in a game perhaps you need help seperating reality from fantasy. Eve is a very social game where teamwork is rewarded. Healthy competition is a good thing.
Getting so upset about a lost ship in a game is not healthy. Letting it get to the point you need to hurl abuse at people and pour all manner of imiprications on them because they bested you is not cool. Excuses about it being IC for you to say the things you do are just that, excuses.
If you can honestly look in the mirror and not see that perhaps you should speak to a professional counsellor. This is a game, fleet battles are not much different to a game of Rugby. Pirates and Bounty Hunters, what you never played Cops and Robbers as a kid?
This really goes for a lot of the carebears in Eve. If you get so worked up over a game it's time to step back and get some perspective. Nobody in Eve deserves the kind of insults I see coming from you guys when you get popped by a pirate. The IC baiting you see from the likes of CVA and the other RP groups out there is cool, it adds to the game. Screaming names at people in local does not.
For the record I am not a pirate. In fact I used to hunt them but due to whining / abusive / crying posts and tirades in local from their prey and in general a good natured sportsman like approach from pirates I decided to leave both sides to it.
Equating violence against people in movies to violence against ships in Eve is silly. You might as well argue that Space Invaders promotes violence.
All I'm saying is keep local clean. Bait and goad all you want their but if you just want to call somebody a **** do it in a private channel. Really I don't need to say it as the rules are quite clear and support my position fully. I'd bet you'll cry a lot more when you get hit with the heavy end of a ban stick than you have about losing your ship to pirates.

smacktalk is great aslong as it's funny, witty, non-insulting and doesn't go down the road of "my p3n1s is sooo much bigger than yours"
I consider it homourous stress relief after battle. Ofcourse some people see it as a ways to vent angre over losing, an attempt to get rid of all the vengeful feeling they've been harboring ever since you blew them up that one time, the perfect oppertunity to vent some RL issues by filling someones hide with insults, ego patch etc etc.
But seriously, if someone can't bare to see a little witty back and forth smack then they need to grab a tissue and cry about it. Or maybe go give a speech on political correctness in MMO's... cry me another one pweaze! |
