What would be considered a good number of maximum locked targets, beyond which additional locks aren't really all that useful.
For example, you can lock two targets in the beginning. This is obviously too few since you often want to attack more than two ships at the same time, mine more than two asteroids at the same time, or don't want to have to target new stuff *immediately* after you blow up that one ship. So I'm thinking of increasing it to 4 or 5.
But beyond that, how useful are additional locks? What would you need them for? |

You will know when you know?
Honestly this is a tough one to answer. I spent over a year content with 4 or 5 since most frigates cant target more than that. I know logi pilots love having 9+ to keep folk prelocked.
Pve in bigger ships like more targets since it takes so frigging long to target the next one.
what ship class are you flying today and what are you doing with it? Might be able to give more advice with that info. |

Currently I'm just flying frigates and destroyers, and am slowly training up the skills I need to fly cruisers for L2 missions.
It's not so much that I'm curious about more targets in my personal situation, though. I mainly want to know what the use is for other people - in whatever situation they may find them useful. Pre-locking for logistics and bigger ships with slow targeting sound like good reasons. :) |

pretty much what L'ouris said. As I fly logistics I like my 10 locked targets. Apart from that, more is better so it's worth training if you need to.
If, for example, you spend all your time mining, additional targets aren't going to be that useful. In any sort of combat situation, more is better. That said, you have to strike a balance between what is useful now and the training time you could more usefully spend better elsewhere.
If you are looking to fly logistics in the near future it's definately something you should prioritise. |

Since your looking for reasons:
another one off the top of my head is to target drones in addition to your primary target
I sometimes use it to target objects I want to keep at a certain range so I don't have to keep searching my overview during a fight without giving up manual control.
I have used as many targets as possible when flying support against bomber gangs with inties and other fast lockers. Not to actually do much beyond try and prevent them from cloaking back up
Hope this helps |

As said. It really depends on what you do.
Logi pilot...As much as possible. So you can keep the FC, tackle, other logi pre-locked and still have room for the broadcasting people.
PvP DPS Grunt...maybe 4 tops, as you will concentrate fire on the primairy and lock up the secondary and tertiary. This leaves room for one more target for for instance Ewar modules.
PvE...what ever you desire but more isnt bad. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

Everyone has different styles. I tend not to lock things until I have to, or think I might have to. Might delay me a few seconds now and then, but it keeps my focus on the ships I have to care about. Same deal regarding watch lists, I don't really set on up unless I'm a logistic pilot, which means more of my attention is freed up to look around and watch my surroundings.
Other people tend to like as much information as possible, and thus tend to lock and watchlist everyone. If you're just looking for a number usually 4 or 5 tends to be a reasonable number. This has never really been an issue for me ingame, though, and you shouldn't have problems with it either. Glory |

As a marauder pilot that locks up all 10 regularly anything else doesn't feel like enough xD
Hell even the 10 doesnt seem like enough when I one shot 4 frigs at once with my tachyons.
BAM, there goes 40% of the targets I just had, in one more cycle 80% is gone and I need to get locking.
Point being that it more depends on on you and your ship. The Drake is a Lie |

7 for most ships. 11 for logi pilots, other ships require other numbers.
I would get 10, as the training time between 7 and 10 is miniscule. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. The difference between an enemy and a friend is that you stab your enemies in the front. |

Once you go up to 6 (Targeting 4), it should be enough for most ships BC and down, apart from Logistics. If you do decide to go for targeting 5 though, consider getting multitasking 3 as well since level 1-3 takes no time. |

I tend towards 8.
If you mission with a few others, locked targets can vanish pretty rapidly, and if you're working on frigates, its nice to have 3/4 locked at a time to offset the long lock time.
If you're solo then 4/5 is fine, but you need more in a group to make sure you're never waiting on locks.
If you're asking for pvp, no idea, sorry. |

I won't repeat what others before me have said, but I will add this: the highest number of targets you'll be able to lock based on the hard-set limit in the ships themselves is 10 (or it might be 11... can't remember off the top of my head). Generally, getting Targeting to V and Advanced Targeting to III will put you at the max targets any ships can actually handle. Ransoms are accepted in Isk, Ships, Mods, and Dolls. |

Fit a couple of Auto Targeting System II on a marauder and you could lock up to 31 targets. Of course, nobody does that as your skills will limit you to 12 targets or less. However, it is not unheard of to fit one ATS on a Logistic ship to allow 12 targets. |

Get targeting to 4, and then ignore it in favor of other skills until you find yourself thinking, "Hey, I wish I could lock some more targets," at which point you can take a few days to train it to 5 and pick up advanced targeting to at least 3 (quick train) or 4 (still pretty fast). |

I often fit an automated targeting unit for extra targets. It doesn't even have to be activated to get more targets.
I just prefer locking-up a lot of targets, especially when locking is slow.
I think I'd aim for 10. I don't think I've used more than that. |

And as we are talking about automated targeting systems in the New Citizens forum:
The number of targets you can actually lock will be the minimum of what you and your ship can handle. How many targets you (the pilot) can handle depends on your skills (2+targeting+advanced targeting). How many targets your ship can handle depends on the hull and can be increased with automated targeting systems.
Freighters cannot lock anything, other than that the number of targets a ship can handle goes from 2 (for Industrials) to 10 (Logistics, Marauders) with 6 being the most common number.
As an automated targeting system only increases the number of targets your ship can handle, it only makes sense to fit one if your skills allow you to handle more targets than your hull does. |

Automated Targeting Systems are a very, very niche module. Forget they exist unless you get into PVP Logistics and are flying in a 12-13 person gang.
Whilst it may be true that 6 is the most common number of locks, 7 is common enough (all or almost all t1 battleships) that you should train for 7 in short order. Then the next three are used enough to merit thesingle day of training they take to get. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. 12 targets s barely enough for a max-skilled Noctis pilot. 10 targets is nice for Incursion logistics. 5 isn't enough for missions. Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |

5 is optimal for almost everything. Many ships can't even lock more than 5 targets. So if you're not going to often fly ships able to lock more - 5 targets is good.
About noktis: in any dangerous (at least a bit) area you don't need more than 4 targets to loot wrecks, because you will be always aligned to a safe spot or pos while pulling 4 targets with 4 tractor beams and salvaging them with 4 salvagers in the process, on the move.
In pvp, grunts also don't need more than 6 targets locked, it's just pointless.
Conclusion: don't rush for maximum targets, you can spend your time for much more useful skills - always. It's stupid like learning Salvaging to 5 on a character which is not a dedicated looter-alt (because rewards of that 4-5 lvl change are not worth the time for main characters).
p.s. if you need more than 6 targets for ratting or pvping (as a soldier) - most likely you're stupid and just can't effectively manage your targets: even 20 won't look enough for you. I would say 5 to start out and 8 would be a good baseline. If you are a Noctis pilot, with the new portable fitting array, you'll be able to fit 8 tractors and pull everything in, then fit 8 salvagers and loot it all. It really all depends how much time you want to invest. This message brought to you by Experience(tm). When common sense fails you, experience will come to the rescue. If you're looting in a dangerous place you won't be able to refit and salvage your loot, because you'll be moving all the time aligned to a safe spot or POS. And you won't really need to lock more than 6 targets, ever. If you're looting in highsec you'll be able to use the new tractor structure to pull the wrecks and use your 8 highslots for salvagers - so your maximal need for locked targets will be 8 (and only if you live in highsec). Unless you want to fly logistics frain targetting to 4 and then revisit it in the future if you feel the need. As mentioned above there are much more important skills to get to V before targetting. |
