Ok, I have tried and tried and I am still a little lost. I am kinda new to the game and can't seem to find any helpful information on trade routes.
How does one do a trade route?
I was told to buy low and sell high. When I can find an trade good that is sold at a profitable price I can't seem to find enough of that trade good to make the trip worth it.
When I can find a lot of a trade good I can't find a place to sell it for anywhere near the price I payed for it.
Any ideas? Helpful hints? Links to guides? or shall I check the market for a clue for myself and call it a day?

Trading has sucked for several days. It looks like CCP has stopped the daily seeding of the trade routes, or maybe moved to a more irregular schedule. I haven't checked today though.
In general, I can say that you have to compare prices in several regions. Don't expect to be able to sell in the same region as you buy. As an exercise, pick 2-3 types of trade goods, for example Quafe, Silicon, and Water, and travel along the highway systems (for example: Hek-Pator-Yulai-Tourier) and write down prices for these goods. You should be able to find some deals.

Thanx Barbicane that is a step in the right direction.
Where do you typically start from?
What I had been doing is using my account in one regon and warping my room mate to another and trying to find the best deals.
Typically I will find something with a good profit that I can afford and it turns out there is only 1 maybe 2 of that item available.
Is it worth making the runs with loads of stuff with very low buy prices and slightly higher sell prices? I would think simply mining or hunting would be a better investment of time.

Some goods are better to trade than others but I'm not revealing which . That's something you need to find out for yourself.
It may be profitable to trade low-profit goods if they are low price and low volume so you can afford to fill up your cargo hold and get a lot of them in there. Quafe is not too bad that respect.

Edited by: Barbicane on 02/09/2003 19:23:56 Here is a concrete trading tip for all budding traders:
1) Go to New Caldari, planet IV - moon 1, Chief Executive Panel Bureau. 2) Buy Mexallon for 15 isk/unit. (I'm selling ) 3) Check the demand in the same region. At this writing there are 3 systems buying more than 100k at 16 isk/unit. Go there and sell.
If the demand is gone when you're reading this, move 1 jump to Malkalen (Lonetrek), Muvolailen (Citadel), or Yulai (Genesis), and check the demand there.
Note: Don't travel through Aunenen system if you go into Lonetrek. Lot's of pirate activity there.

the best item to trade afaik is robotics, but you have to really want to do it to make the money because of the "downtime traders" who make large buy orders just before downtime taking advantage of the 'restocking' of the market. they get the robotics cheap and make around 666 isk per item. i managed to get a few runs in one time, and made a tidy profit. nothing massive.
For the 'lower end' goods, ie items giving 10 isk / unit you really need the capital to buy enuf to fill your cargo and make the max profit / run.
I've tried to get the hang of this trading buisness, but it seems to not reap the same profits mining/hunting does. although i have heard of people making millions.
One day I shall... but they'll prolly change it by then :'-(

Can any players confirm this alleged stealth change? How about you, CCP? |

It is true that ever since CCP "came back from vacation" there has been a change in the placement of goods and the priceing of different goods.
I am sure they will claim they make changes all the time and perhaps this is true. However, in the time period I mentioned they have made significant ones.
The simplest proof I have is that I now make more isk from non robotics than from robotics and I can trade for longer after the downtime than I have ever been able to. Supply points have changed for various items and more significantly this is forceing travel through more .4 and lower security systems.
The best advice I can give you Occtavya is to tell you that locateing routes is work. Dont think about tradeing anything for the next couple of times you log in. Just start looking at prices of goods in various regions.
I would also like to echo the advice above about mineral tradeing. It is a cheap easy way to make some isk. On a per m3 basis it is tough to beat minerals. A fast ship frigate can trade alot of minerals fairly cheaply and the other benefit is you get to look around at the market in other regions. Mex and Iso are the best for it although Nox can be at times.
Good luck.
