They help OLD players gain an even bigger advantage on NEW players.
When the adv learnings came out, the old players already had tons of skills, some of em even lamented that "Theres nothing really interesting that I want to train." So when the adv learning came out, all the 2 year old players got them right away, to be able to train more quickly any new skills that come out later (like Dreads and Titans.)
When new players come in, they neither have the time or the money to be training up Adv Learning. They start out having LOUSY SP generation, after a week of training the basic learnings to 4, they will have about %75 of the SP generation of the Veteran players, but UNLESS they then sacrifice 2 months of training, they are FALLING BEHIND in SP generation to the players who have BEEN HERE for 3 years.
So the players who already HAVE 30 mil+ SP are getting the most SP generation with no sacrifice, while the youngest players who need SP the most desperately start out with the worst SP generation and have to sacrifice 2 months of training just to have the same SP generation rate as everybody else.
If you think SP isnt really necessary, go start an alt, don't transfer any money or skillbooks, see how it feels to spend 4 hours on the lame new tutorial, and go try to compete with all the macrominers to make some money.
The game is downright HOSTILE to noobs, from the 3 year old pirates camping lowsec, to the stupid advanced learning system, to the macrominers, to the way the market is saturated with ships and modules from players with umber material effciency BPO's which they have been researching nonstop for years.
In our day they didnt have anything bigger than a Cruiser, and you did the learnings for 1 week and you were done. You could actually fly a indy into 0.0 without instas and make it about %50 of the time.
Back when I first started you could actually make a LIVING out of mining Veld. I used to sell Trit at 3 isk each, financed my first Cruiser like that, it was an Osprey.
Now you can't do NONE of that. Most of the starting sectors are mined out. Trit is being dumped on the market by chinese guys with 5 large barge, I petition them daily and CCP don't do schit about it.
We got %80 of the population sitting in %20 of the map packed like sardines with the sharks in .4 waiting for someone to stick a toe in the water.
Good luck if you're making a Scientist or Production character, you're gonna have to compete with people with skills so high they can build a battleship with 0 wasted minerals. Yeah good luck competing on the market kid.
Advanced Learning isn't even the major issue, the real injuries are the general noob-unfriendliness of the game, Advanced Learning is just the Bukkake of humiliation on top of it all.
Not only do you start broke and clueless, but you're gonna have to spend 2 months just to merge onto the skillpoint superhighway in your 1972 Pinto with bald tires.
I noticed the same thing, and that's why out of 10 people from my Planetside outfit that jumped on the trial program to try this game out, only 2 of us actually made it the full 14 days and subbed. Everyone else got ganked and/or frustrated at the idea of spending almost 2 months training Learning skills to be able to even get the SP generation to actually get anywhere fast.
You are absolutely right in all your assessments above, and it's sad because without new blood, the game will stagnate fast.
Maybe a new server is needed where EVERYONE can start over if they wish?
I salute you :)
