They don't seem to pay much as compared to mining, so why should players consider investing their time in doing missions?

Look at it as an investment. Might not pay so good now but will in the future. Doing missions for a good lvl3 agent pays from 70k to 190k per mission, some can be finnished instantanious by having the requested stuff at hand, others require a 10 jump roundtrip or so.
Besides the monetary gain you get services from the agents. Thoose can be very powerful. My personal favourites are the ability to pay for a security rating boost and tha ability to get the location of pilots from my agents.
Whan higher levels of agents are introduced you can expect more gain, more complex missions and more powerful services from them. _________________________________________________________

I agree with J. - sec status healing combined with location services are a deadly combination.
Equip yourself with a disposable ship equipped with standard market weapons, etc. and you can make a highly effective suicide assassination squad capable of eliminating people who mine, follow regular trade routes or hunt NPCs with ease.

Also there are item rewards for agent missions which you cannot aquire elsewhere (currently not many on Tranquility but more are coming in soon).
Also most implants and boosters (which make your character better) will be a reward for agent missions or available through the black market system deployed by agents exclusively. Some of the implants will make it in with the next big patch.

Anyone know how you go about getting a better or different agent? Is it simply a case of waiting until you are recommended to a new one by a well-established agent, or can you just swan up to one in a space station

As far as I can gather it is the amount of % your standings increase towards that agents corporation and faction (Amarr/Caldari/The Syndicate etc) every time you complete a mission.

i dont mind the agent missions not paying as much as mining...and granted special items like boosters are nice, but my main concern is the utter tedium of them. I have tried 3 different corporate agents and they all offer the same missions. So not only are the missions non-agent specific, they also repeat themselves. I don't mind doing a whole lot of missions to obtain a special service/item. But when those missions are super-boring (dare I say more boring than mining??), then for me they are not worth doing. Will there be some way to "skip ahead" to the higher level agents? The way it seems to be now I fear that many of the long-time players will be effectively barred from doing agent stuff because they simply don¦t want to do 100+ missions for next to no pay (when mining or hunting in their BS will yield over a million per hour).
How about (when the "new" agents are introduced) for some one-time agent gains based on the players current 1) skillpoints or 2) networth (i.e. combined worth of ships+gear+cash)?

Of course I realise that it¦s not possible to just give high level agents to everyone, but the way it stands now many people never did agent missions because quite simply they were broken at the time when it would have paid to do them (i.e. bugged frequently, lower rewards than other occupations etc.). For players starting out now this is not a problem because agents offer similar isk/time than mining or hunting, but for the players who did not do agent missions because at the time because it was simply not possible it will be tough, because now they are at a different level, while their agent missions are not.
Agents incidentally are the only thing that one can not get into at any level - You can do trading and especially hunting at any level it pleases you (and that you have the gear for), but agent missions always start at level zero (i.e. fetch me two units of toilet paper for my ailing grandmother). Someone flying a battleship isn¦t even going to consider that.
And from an RP point of view it¦s not realistic that an agent is going to ask a battleship pilot to fetch him a few rounds of small ammo for some silly cause. Here¦s five mill, buy youself all the ammo you want and a few ships to further your cause, but refer me to your best agent buddy immediately.
So how about some productive input? (deep breaths, Booky)
What could be a solution would be to split the agent system, giving an isk reward level based on the current ship of the player (you go to your agent in a battleship, you get missions fit for a battleship) and a service / equipment / referral reward based on the number of missions the player has already done.
That way those who have done plenty of agent missions will have access to the good gear and services long before everyone else, and the higher-level players just getting started won¦t have to sit throgh dozens of hours of no-pay tedium.

Lot's of higher level players have been doing no-pay agent missions, because they want the rewards, now as it is, you can join them, or you can buy inplants or whatever from people who can be bothered to do the work.
With the current system, you can progress faster with agents if you have already got good state standings from NPC hunting, as this increases the effective quality of your agents.
As for RP, it's trust that you have to build up with your agents, so regardless of your ship the agent won't trust you with VIP rescues or data runs untill your've proved your worth.

Actually I like the system as it is. I am in a BS now and have been mining since day one. I am one helluva miner now, but I suck bigtime when it comes to doing missions.
But that is my choice, and not the fault of someone else. I am in a big and good Corp and therefore dont have to do missions (unless I want to). I can afford to specialize in just one area, in away that I guess would be impossible if you are solo?
The way missions work now, you are forced to put immence amounts of time into the mission flying. While I get my isks from selling minerals, you get better agents when doing missions. If you could just buy your way to the top then noone would do the time consuming first missions. As it is now, the mission specialists have the opportunity to have access to some high class equip (well granted not now, but in theory and future patches... =) and thereby be in a position to make lots of isk that way.
In short, I for one say keep the sys as it is. It is good to make people specialize. Makes the game more fun.
Just my 2...

"And from an RP point of view it¦s not realistic that an agent is going to ask a battleship pilot to fetch him a few rounds of small ammo for some silly cause"
The ship does not make the man, so to speak.
Just because you are in a battleship and have a multi-million ISK wallet doesn't mean you are worth trusting, from a corporate perspective.
Since it takes a piddly amount of time to work up a level 1 agent into a level 3 (about 100 missions total if you're ugly and have no social skill) - a few days at best, I honestly don't see any compelling reason to change the system.
Once docking agents are fixed, people can pick up corp agents when and where they want for the most part - it might take some work tho if you have a specific corp in mind.
Then you have to spend a few days working the agent to get access to higher level agents and the higher level rewards.
While some were out getting agents, and getting a pittance of pay out of them, you were out mining or chaining rats or whatever for substantially more ISK.
It was a tradeoff then, it is a tradeoff now, and it should remain a tradeoff.
Besides. Hop in a frigate, and run some lowbie missions. It isn't that bad.

Some people are mysteriously transformed to upper class snobs afraid of getting their hands dirty the moment they get a bs. Strange.
This would be a good time to realise that isk is not the sole purpose of the game. I never did a mission for the isk, I earn money doing other stuff.
On the other hand, if you got a lot of isk, you can buy good standing from many agents, in effect skip missions. |

There should be no way that people can buy their way to decent agents - I've done agent missions since the very start, didn't want to mine! Yes, there were lots of problems in the early days, yes, I've petitioned regarding lots of problems, yes the agent accepting on dock isn't working, yes some of the rewards are about a useful as a slap in the face with a large damp salmon - BUT, isn't it obvious with a game so big as this that the agent system was going to be an intergral part of the world?
Not wanting to sound like a party ****er, but some many people have just gone into the game thinking how much money do I need to get a battle ship, then I'll PvP and that's the game.
Nope, sorry, your mistake, I've been playing since Retail and don't have huge amounts of cash, or massive mining commissions or the ability to make anything, but I do have a good standing with my npc corporation.... anyone can mine and refine, but only a few 'worthy' people will make it up into the higher levels of Eve politics and make the mega bucks Hopefully one of those people will be me!
Anyway, just my 2 penneth worth...

This is the worst idea I have ever heard. What about the lot of us who have been tolerating the bugged missions since day one when we could be mining or chain spawning pirates. Should we get battleships real cheap now because we didn't want to mine? And you'll get high level agents cause you didn't want to do missions?
Take a minute and think about what you are asking.

Do agents give similar isk/time as mining does? Where are those agents? Afk mining in a indy with a single miner I is more profitable then missions from a level 3 agent.

Sitting through dozens of hours of no-pay tedium is no more fun in a frigate then it is in a battleship. We have all had to do it so why shouldn't you? I have done over 300 no-pay tedium missions. In that time I could have been mining and then I would have a battleship. But I chose to do missions and now I don't have a battleship but I have good agents.

I didn¦t realise that agent missions were such a sore spot with those who did them.
Just to get this perfectly clear: I am not advocating a "good agents for everyone, lets cheat those stupid suckers who¦ve been doing missions for 100+ hours out of their meager rewards" kind of fix. And please no more "I had to do 1500 boring no-pay agent missions and so should you". FYI: I have done plenty of agent missions, so I know wha¦t it¦s like and what it gains you. And since I¦ve been playing since retail - had to do the agent missions fairly late in the game, so yes, no pay, no fun, no tangible rewards.
Lets try and forget our various characters for a while and focus on the gameplay issues here:
Agent missions were to be a big part of this game, that¦s what they were intended to be like (check your box, i think it says something along those lines there). For a newbie player agent missions do offer similar isk/time as mining or hunting - now that they finally work as they should.
For advanced players they don¦t do that, and since most players want to see an isk reward in what they do (lets face it, most of this game revolves around isk), or a comparable service, agent missions will have to be boosted in some respects. The afk Miner you mentioned makes more than he could doing agent missions, so why should he bother?
If you look at how people spend their time in EVE agent missions are (for the fact that they should be an integral part of the game, not the least for the fact that they are a great tool for involving players in the plot) somewhere far down on the list. I simply think that that¦s not the way it should be. As for people "buying ahead" on the agent ladder - a dual system with isk reward and item/service reward would fix that. I think that something like that will be needed to get people involved with the agents, and to give agents the status that they deserve.
And Rot Animal, yes, you could have been mining, but it would be fairer if you would have gotten (or would get) a similar reward for doing agent missions. I don¦t see why someone doing agent missions gets stuck with good standing and a few not-so-great perks while the miners get the battleships. With a dual reward system that could be fixed without much pain - cruiser and above pilots could start making about the same isk doing agent missions while slowly upgrading their standings while those who have already done the missions get their implant/service/whatever rewards right away, giving them an edge (or isk, if they choose to sell it).
The point of having such a diverse world is that people can reach their goals with different approaches - Mining, Hunting, Trading, Agent Missions. That¦s the way it should be. And yes, Agent missions for gangs are definitely a great idea.
Agents employ your services. It¦s customary to offer an adequate financial (or equivalent) reward for such an employment, now don¦t tell me that it¦s supposed to be the way that you make next to nothing doing missions.

The agent missions aren't just about the ISK. They are about building up contacts in the EVE universe. You are working your way up for hopes of future gains, not instant ISK. We have been told (and will finally see come next patch) the fruit of our hard work. Our hours of boring, no pay, slave work is finally paying off and I'd hate to see those who have been playing the game with only isk in their minds get the same rewards right away as we will.
I understand what you are saying about splitting the missions where one half pays well to battleship pilots and the other half gives us the benefits we have worked for. I don't see that happening though. The only way that could be implemented would be to create new agents that give much more money, have harder missions but offer no services. That would mean adding hundreds of new agents and rebuilding the whole system. I also can not see how that would be implemented. Would they have to make new corporations with agents that offer no services? Or would those agents be in the old corps and give you standings like regular agents so eventually you'd get the same agents we have? The latter option would never be fair to us and the first option would never be fair to you and I doubt that any battleship pirates would bother doing missions while they could be mining for the same ISK. Cause let me tell you something: Those missions really aren't that entertaining (not now anyways)

It is also customary for corps to do security and background checks, personality profiling, and a host of other things. This is what the level 1/2 agents are doing.
Sure, you can have a good sec status, but you won't have any Corporate faction. Just because you are rich and famous doesn't mean you are competant to do the kind of legwork a corp like the Republic Security Services or Federation Navy needs done.
