I have a small question/debate here regarding the ingame Corp chat channel ?
Now a while ago now I recieved a nice bit of mail from CCP about using abusive language in a public channel Im normally pretty polite but I must have been drunk so o well. But one thing concerns me..... Corp Chat!
Now I dont know about you guys but our corp chat channel is a never ending torrent of hate-filled abuse between certain members lol. Now some of the players mean what theyre saying, some are just having a laugh and its done in good humour. But atm we must have upset some noobs or something because theres a vast increase of Spying, corp theft of petty items (who the hell steals frigates... I mean come on ) etc etc
If someone within our corp was to petition what was being said in the channel where would the members stand exactly ?
Should we be putting a warning on corp bio, disclaimer of some kind lol Or is corp chat not considered a public channel ? I mean if someone genuinly doesn't like whats being said they can leave....
Because if your not allowed to speak in Corp the way you want to (and every corp ive ever been in has been abusive as hell) whats to stop someone getting an alt into a war targets corp and petitioning the member EVERY SINGLE time they say something abusive ?
hehe if corp chat doesn't class as public and you can say what I want I wrote an essay for nothing Joy

1. Every converstaion can be petitioned 2. You've been in the wrong corporation 3. You can shoot people in your own corporation freely (PC corp).. use this to your advantage. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

The corp is your family, it is not anyone elses job to councel you through disputes. Corp chat is a public channel, by the definition that a private channel is one that is only accessible through directly opened contact between two or more individuals. This could be for example gang chat. Solve the conflicts in your corp, don't do the laundry on a public forum, especially if you're not looking for a resolve.

But this is my point, How many Corp/Alliance channels are abuse free ? Id bet VERY few.
Whats to stop me creating an alt account filling in details of me being 8years old. train for a month, join Alliance of choice.... And start getting all the members banned

Most alliances chats are far more civil than you immagine.. it goes back to being able to shoot people for being a pain in the ass. It does, of course, depend on the alliance. Not suprisingly a certain type of alliance attracts a certain type of player. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

If this is an opinion you believe in, you might be crazy and sociopathic. It is the other way around. Only a few consists of people who hate eachother, just as it is with any group of friends or a work place. People might have disputes, but they never resolve to verbal abuse unless they are socially incompetent.

hmm.
id hardly call SNRA abuse free, but then we dont smacktalk nebba because we acturally mean it, we do it because we love to make him look bad
of course, there is a cultural difference, i have pretty much always insulted my corp mates in a humorous manner expecting them to return the favor.
corp chat pales in comparison with teamspeak sometimes though, get Bazzy or Jaabaa drunk and you will learn some new curses, every time. _____________________________ Ex-Coretech, We still shoot people. |

All the corp chats i have been in have been fairly drama free, Altho i do tend to prefer mature corps. Direct insults and such are not tolerated, but banter is fine. Just have to know where to draw the line.
Although i would say if you get to the point where you have to petition, you might as well just leave the corp.

Aye but meant in jest or not if its on screen in text for all to see apparently it can be petitioned So my idea of using an alt to get corp members repeatadly warned/banned is perfectly feasible. Most players who play drunk/stoned on a friday sat night will be the first to go lol
And to the guy above... seriously run along. Ok not all players hate each, very few do. But id say a vast amount of players occasionly even if not meaning it in a nasty way throw an explietive(sp) into corp chat. Congratz that can be petitioned by Mr Alt.

QFT I really can't understand abuse in corp chat, unless in jest, which won't be petitioned. If you're worried about that, you might wanna stop abusing people. hint hint ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

IN JEST
As I clearly have stated above it doesn't matter if its in jest or not, If you say something abusive an alt of a war target etc can have you petitioned. And you will recieve a warning. And under no event will you be informed who was the member that petitioned you so they are free to keep doing so.

Every corp that I have been in - and several in game channels I am on - is generally full of good natured abuse, posting of pics of members superimposed on top of models in latex nurse's uniforms (I have to confess to enjoying the research for raw materials), etc. Sometimes people overstep the line but generally its good slightly-obscene/weird fun.
In my old corp, we used to warn new members about the style of corp chat ("slightly insane drivel and abuse" was how we described it). We did have a younger member and I suspect we all moderated our language when he was on - at least we moderated the topics of conversation.
People fall out, of course, but the corp pretty much self-regulated the channel when someone was acting out of order.
I think that, while its officialy a public channel, it'd be a rare day indeed that someone petitioned what went on in corp chat as its seen as a bit more of a private channel by the people on it.

Or maybe you should all just grow up and start using sensible language.
Yes, corp chat can be petitioned and characters can be warned, or even gagged, for what they say. I know whereof I speak. ________________________________________________

The rules say 'no abusive language, at all'. As I understand it though, in order for anything to happen, someone has to object to a GM.
To my mind, whilst I tend to avoid it, I don't object to 'strong language' in a 'not really public channel' (e.g. corp chat, 'corp friends' channel). Alliance chat is slightly different, since there's quite a few people who can read it. Beyond a certain size it stops being a close knit group, and so becomes hard to handle the cameraderie necessary to get away with it.
I draw the line at 'directed abuse' at someone else in the channel though. e.g. I just got shot by $group, they're a bunch of $offensive_word I don't mind especially, and won't petition.
However, even a disclaimer doesn't _protect_ you. It does mean you're less likely to get petitions, simply because there's only a few who'll do so when they were warned in advance. But as in all other walks in life, there are people who will do so simply because it'll hurt others.

I don't think corp chat should be petitionable and they shouldn't count as public channels. I mean we take the **** out of each other in corp chat for a laugh a lot of the time and it's all in good humour.
As you said it would be easy for a war target to petition people in corp chat all the time and get people banned for part of a war.

The point is if those are the rules then they're silly. Membership to a corp is voluntary and both the potential member and the corp (via the recruiter) agree to it, so it should be considered a private forum. (Except NPC corps of course).

And as you seem to have not quoted he was saying he would like it changed to freedom of speech within corp chat
Game rules are a fine line, TeamSpeak / Ventrilo ... technicly theyre out of game aids are they not While theyre not an offense they could easily be seen as one.

If you don't like the way people talk in corp chat, you have choices. You can leave the corp and find one that suits you better, or you can kick people from the corp depending on your position in the corp. What is acceptable and what isn't is defined by the consensus of people in the corp. If you have twenty people that like calling each other names for a laugh, and you are the 21st member of the corp who is a sensitive soul and can't cope with a bit of bad language and banter, then just leave the corp. No need to petition or anything because you have a choice. You choose which corp to be in. You choose who you associate with. You choose what is acceptable in corp chat.
Public channels are a different matter entirely because people don't consent to having to listen to abusive language. We all get Local whether we want it or not. Bottom line there is don't use abusive language and show some respect. You will be petitioned and ultimately banned otherwise.

our corp chat is usually highly obscene but noone is out to insult someone it's just that we're sick people. on an other note.. you might want to review your recruitment policy. the quantity over quality approach yields good numbers and blobpower but you get lots of unwanted material like spies, thieves and people with bad character. it's not advisable for a pirate corp imo because many ****ed off victims will try to get into it and cause damage.

Not that we're prone to making ridiculously over-the-top pronouncements in THIS forum, gods no...
Originally by: Grimwalius d'Antan Only a few consists of people who hate eachother, just as it is with any group of friends or a work place. People might have disputes, but they never resolve to verbal abuse unless they are socially incompetent.
That's very simplistic. You assume that people who're abusive to each other hate each other - at least, that's how I read what you wrote here. But amiable abuse is often a relatively everyday part of working relationships. I don't say it always occurs - it depends on the personalities involved. But contrary to what the strictly politically-correct lobby might say, it can actually serve a useful purpose, if tensions can be released through good-natured ribbing and banter, rather than everybody having to be on best, eggshells behaviour all the time. And there's a lot of different kinds of dispute. Where it's a heated, angry dispute, yes, you're right it's better to tackle it as civilly as possible, and those who're UNABLE to do so are open to criticism for being socially inept. But where it's a mild dispute between good friends or established colleagues, there're a lot of ways it might be approached.
As far as corp chat is concerned, what you've stated above is no less your opinion ("It is the other way around") than Alliaanna's statement that you responded to. Maybe some day CCP will produce statistics for this (here's hoping they don't bother), but until then we've all of us only got our own experience, and therefore our own opinion, to go on.
So is abuse in corp chat right? Sometimes it's okay, sometimes it's not. Like so many things in law, it depends on the intent behind it. If the intent is clearly to hurt or offend, then it's not right and should be dealt with by the corp, or petitioned if they won't. If someone doesn't like abusive language then a small corp should be able to discuss the problem and come to a compromise. A large corp should be responsible enough to automatically take account of the fact that some of its members might be sensitive to this sort of thing. |

Lol no im not his alt
Im training Sp, doesn't that make me a main
urr yeah but anyway I think everyones missing the point, I dont care if you think its right or wrong to speak to fellow corpies in an abusive mannor or not. Each to their own....
But as the system stands now it would be Oh so easy for a spy/alt to get many players into trouble.
Lets take a Friday night, most of us over the age of 16 (I know legal age is 18... but I also know how old those little brats are down my local! ) are down the pub. Then a lot like me probably jump onto Eve for some drunken . How many repeat warning would you need to get banned from game ?
* the number by the amount of times playing eve drunk and thats my calculation for how long you'd stay in the game
If you want to annoy an enemy this is a sure fire way of doing it.

What a bunch of crap. I agree that obscenities in generally unmoderated public channels like 'local' should be petitionable and get handled by GMs. But alliance chat? Or corp chat for that matter? Christ, if someone is really bothered by another member's behavior they should address their superiors who can discipline these people or simply remove them from their corp. If the superiors chose to ignore your request then I say you either put up, block the guy or simply leave the corp/alliance.. not get the damn GMs with their ban sticks involved. This is like calling the cops to come beat up your friends who are having a heated argument.

I judge things by intention, not what it looks like out of context. If someone is using bad language directed at you with the intention to insult you, it is abuse in my opinion. If someone is using bad language towards you as part of a joke (that can be defended and identified as a joke), I don't consider it to be abuse.

No. It isn't. Obscene language and abuse are ILLEGAL here. It's more like calling the cops because your friends are knifing each other in the street - something you'd be legally and morally *obliged* to do.
If your friends don't like it, they should learn to follow the game rules. Simple enough. ________________________________________________
