one thing i have allways admired about eve online is the quality of the graphics, this is what drew me to the game in the first place. But this was 3/4 years ago the game will run happily on a p3 and geforce 2 gpu.the thing is now with out amd 64 x2's and nvidia 7800's, i think the game/graphic engine has become a bit dated. What i mean by this is that we could have have ship models with more polygons and/or some of the older ships re modeled and retextured. and oh yeah those texture maps could be improved with much higher resolution maps / paralax / specularity and bump maps some of the later ships arn't bad but some of the earlier ships aka the moa well lol. and what about shadows?. the user interface is o.k. but the engine in my opinion needs work. what about models that change depending on damage, hull plates fall off, fire bellowing from inside the ship that make it look really damaged. and maybe an alert kind of sound effect coming from the ship and sounds of twisting and stressed deck plated and sounds of internal explosions. all the interior lights failing just before explosion. man i could go on 4 eva and eva and eva and eva. but i need to go to work now let me have some feedback please on this :)

CCP need to ensure tho that older PC graphics cards can run the game - hence they go to the minimal probably 3 year min machine. UPgrade it as the 3 year trailing system averages come online. If they ugprade it to much and loose a lot of customers who cant play it wont be good for business.
But yes slightly ebtter graphics would be god

you noticed the newer ships, such as battlecruisers and destroyers have more detail than battleships and cruisers? I think they need to upgrade the models of the older ships to keep it looking sweet. We don't need a change of engin, this one does a great job. -----------------

nonsense - what are graphics options for? older users can just switch the new stuff off.
Its seems a waste that all the new eye-candy available today isn't being utilised fully in Eve.
Maybe even downloading a new texture pack for high-end systems might help.

To be honest I think the graphics in game are stunning, it looks amazing on my computer And It Looks even Nicer on My Laptop (DAMN 17inch Widescreen)
The Taranis looks great under the right conditions it shines and reflects in all the right places.
As for bits blowing off, Im sure theres a good reason for it, probably something to do with the server having to track bits flying off or sommint. Thats for the tech heads to sort out. |

I think the graphics are already stunning (yes graphics can always be better), but I would much prefer CCP to focus their efforts on the upcoming Kali release and adding additional features which helps to enrich the actual game play rather then worry about improving already stunning graphics.
Just my thoughts

i have read that they are improving the trinity engine, and i think with the release of the kali patch there will be a certain freshness to the game, i hope they include the planet thing because that would be the cherry on the cake 4 me, but as for the gfx i think newer shaders/textures and models would bring a fresh visual impact. especially if the special effects of battle damage and weopon fire which at the moment is all in my head. and i think added sound effects of ship on alert and stuff would be cool to

Did i miss the shadow option, anisotropic, antialiasing, shaders, textures and lod ?
Damn, look like they need to integrete some personal graphic configuration before upgrading to "the lastest richest guy computer" __ BP n bugs Got a new idea ? (Last updated 5 Sept 05) |

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but EVE only looks great in 400x400px screenshots.
When you see the actual game you are left wondering what all the praise is about.

Edited by: Aaron Sylasta on 02/03/2006 03:49:14 Edited by: Aaron Sylasta on 02/03/2006 03:47:58 Dated? Heh. EVE still looks better than any other MMO I've played.
So you want better textures, higher polycounts, OK, I won't argue with that, I'm not too picky about graphics myself (who's up for some Doom 2 deathmatch!), but some people are. But bump maps, normal maps, PARALLAX MAPS?! Those would go to complete waste on everything but your own ship, unless you really spend that much time staring at stations, asteroids, and enemies, in which case you probably shouldn't.
Shadows...ok, what out in space will be casting that many shadows on you, and when whatever it is does cast a shadow on you, will you be watching close enough to even notice? I'd rather see some varied lighting added instead so that, say, everything on the dark side of the moon just isn't as brightly lit for example. I could really care less though myself.
Damage effects and dynamics could be cool too, but that would be a LOT of work to code in and overhaul all the already existing models. All of this would be a lot of work, and there's already a ton of broken, unbalanced, bugged, or other stuff in the game worth fixing rather than spicing up the eye candy for people who are irked that the game doesn't look as good as UT2007
On another note, while 7800GTXs and AMD64 X2's are "out," they certainly aren't mainstream, and the large majority of EVE players, let alone PC gamers, don't own equivalent technology.

Would be cool with smoke from damaged ships since its easy to implement (missiles already use smoke effect when fired).
But i think content should still be king.

The graphics are awesome... but really, it's only the static backdrop shots of an artists rendition of deep space.
Much of the mesh work, isn't all that more impressive. Take much of the T1 rendered objects, Quake III like. Other games have to render a lot more than just the ships and some projectiles. UT2004 has to render the landscape, atmosphere, obsticles and even foilage.
Becuase it seems that EVE does considerably less rendering than most other environmentally encompassing games, I feel they should really boost the quality of what is rendered. Bump mapping in this environment, including the awesome backdrops, would blow the socks off anyone (think Doom 3 like rendering). I'd be excited to see hi res textures and more polygons per object. The polygon thing might be tricky though, becuase there are finite limitations to total number of triangles your card can render, realtime, at once. But, the beauty of bump mapping is that it generates the appearance of 3D on a 2D plane. So, some areas of a ship can lose polygons while exponentially gaining detail via bump mapping.

While I personally would love to see X3 style graphics in EVE - it simply isnt feasible at this time...
I mean imagine the lag of a fleet battle with 300 players PLUS drones all duking it out in X3 style glory.... ouch then petitions boom by 100% because people lost their ship to lag.
Boosted textures seem the way forward - Look at the damn Exequror, it makes the baby jesus cry with its fugliness.

I'd like a greater sense of scale. Add those polys into making things look big!

I love the graphics of Eve, but yes, there are things that could be improved to match todays graphics capabilities. Minmatar stations especially.
Having said that I would not want those upgrades to be anywhere near as intensive as the latest X3 Reunion game. The X3 demo ground my machine to a halt and in a recent Custom PC Magazine test even SLI or ATI's CrossFire couldn't make playable framerates.
A halfway house with more graphics options would be good though

i'd personally like to see things like, explosions on ships not being directly in the centre of all time, and shots that actually miss your ship visually. Graphical sliders so i can choose stuff like draw distances (when ships become little dots of light when far away, when it renders the trails on engins from zero, to 1 pership, to 1 per engin). -----------------

the new graphics engine should not cause anymore lag than you currently get just because it has a lot more detail on the ships. The bulk of the graphical changes would be handled client side only. Player ships: no change to current, all models, textures and animation would be client side Damage effects: could probably be done with no extra bandwidth requirements. When the client gets a notice that you have been hit for 140pts of damage, the client can pick an appropriate graphical effect to apply that is suitable for that much damage based on the level of your shields, armor, etc.
For floating debris, wreckage, etc, unless players are able to interact with it, then it can be handled client side and not require extra bandwidth to be applied. If I see two bits of wreckage fall off your ship when my missile hits and you only see one, it has no effect on the game play, so it doesn't matter.
Sure, you're PC might run a little slower due to the extra graphical requirements, but you can turn off excessive effects to suit your play style.
