On page 9 of EON magazine issue #2, there is an article about "CCP's intention to release a mobile edition of EVE". It says they already have a prototype client running on GSM phones.
Can we get an update on the progress of this project? and maybe when, if ever, this client/phone is going to be released? Before I get a new phone, I would like to know if this product will become available within the next six months.
At the very least it will cool to be able to change skills when you aren't at your computer. I want wireless EVE, do you? Peace!

If you read the article it says you will be able to do everything that can be done in-station, including chat. That's good enough reason for me to want one.

Returning to the OP's comment, I saw a presentation about Eve Mobile at the GDC in San Jose, last week, given by one of the Eve devs.
The bottom line is that it's a definite plan for them, still at the research stage now (i.e. very early in the development process), but it is moving forward. Given where the presentation took place, in the Microsoft mobile area, I think it will be safe to say that the target platform is something in the line of Windows CE. Symbian/Palm probably won't happen, at least not in a first go round. They may never happen at all.

At this stage they have not made a formal statement regarding release date, which makes perfect sense this early on in the project. If you're still researching something, it's close to impossible to tie down a schedule, since you have not yet locked down the specifications.

Just wanted to clear up the minimal specs at this point in time:
EVE Mobile currently targets Windows Mobile 5.0 on a Pocket PC.
These two devices are our current reference models: http://www.hataekni.is/vorur/Lofatolvur/pnr/293 and http://extranet.ejs.is/extranet/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=HC906
...Yada yada... subject to change ...yada yada... don't blame me if you buy one of these and EVE Mobile doesn't ship or doesn't support it ...yada yada...
Smartphones and Symbian are not currently slated.
EVE Mobile is a research project at this point, so I'm not going to give you guys anything juicy to hold me to. It could all change by tomorrow. I will however say that space flight is not included. Think in-station. Pretty much anything you can find in the station services or neocom bar that makes sense. We're also planning some pretty ebil phone integration features, mostly targeting corp and alliance needs.
Hope that was vague enough, but I'll probably regret this posting one way or the other .

Ah go on, write a simple Symbian client so I can Veld mine, while on a bus. My phone would love you!

I could see EVE on a mobile phone or pda and allow certain features
obviously you wont be able to do very much piloting missions or mining while on your phone/pda/whatever
but I would like to be able to browse market / trade / change and learn skills / organize manufacturing and research all remotely
I acutally have to plan my skill learning around how long Im going to be gone during the day at college / work / out wherever ... and if the skill job takes less time than the time than im out then I loose valuable skill learning time

Hi ... please forgive my ignorance, but I have an HP PDA running windows CE 3.0. Would that be compatable or would I somehow have to upgrade the windows?
Thanks for the time.

Alas, Windows CE upgrades will not happen. The new versions of the OS are tied into the devices so much that the OEMs will just not bother with the resources for upgrading an older device. It's pretty much along the lines of "if you want Windows Mobile 5, buy a device that supports it".
If I remember correctly, HP/Compaq messed around with upgrading some of the Compaq Aeros from CE 2.11 to 3.x, but the results convinced them not try and do to that again. .

I really like this idea! Wow! Now I can keep EVE close to me where ever I go! I can sit next to wierd people on the bus and say:
"Hi, I'm Zydakkahan Bullycunewcaca. I am from the planet orbiting the star you call Alpha Centauri. I am here to impregnate your cattle with our offspring. Don't believe me? Here's my ship. It's sitting in Carirgnottin. The system right next to yours. Yeah, those are DNA rupture hybrid blasters capable of destroying every living creature on the planet that isn't a bulvine. Why am I telling you this? Because that guy sitting two seats in front of us? He's Amarrian. He wants to do the same thing but only keep the 3-legged horn billed rattle tick alive. That man is sick! But I think I can take him if you help me and if you do, I can give you amensty and you can help us tend to the cattle. Have you ever made love to a cow? Who am I asking? Of course you have! That's why I love you Icelanders."
Well, just a thought any way.

To confirm that, all OS upgrades are pretty much in the domain of the telco according to the Microsoft Windows Mobile folk. They wished it weren't so, but the Telco's got them by the balls there. That means you'll probably have to buy a new phone every time a security hole is discovered

Its a damned shame this isn't being developed as either a web based thing or multi-platform. I've tried a WM based phone and it was buggy as hell, switched to a Palm Treo and its heaven in comparison. Please please consider the future of the mobile scene where MS certainly won't the monopoly it enjoys in PC scene.

Well check out www.ipaqchoice.com , upgrades for the hx2000 series and the hx4700 from PPC2003SE to WM 5.0. So it can be done, the devices just need to be compatible from when they were made.

I was just thinking to myself that there should be a mobile Eve client! Trust CCP to be doing it already. :)
I agree that a web-based approach would be good for compatibility. Not sure if they could get it looking sexy enough though.
I thought there should be an Eve client for the Nintendo DS. It's a popular gaming mobile device with wireless internet access. Sounds like the perfect target market. The DS Lite is looking very nice and selling well. Something to consider!
