You know, with all these 'little' patches, I'm starting to feel like I'm back at SOE's somewhat mediochre game based on a certain set of 'space conflict' movies.
This said, at least here the developers still know what they're doing with the game...
... I hope.

24? What have you been smoking
More like 23/6 you mean, because it all runs on an OS that can't even go for a single day without being rebooted.

Sigh, when you try to connect there is a little box on the lower right side on the client. Try read what it says there!

Originally by: Mylinn Funi The server is down for emergency reboot. They sent out an in-game note, and a minute later the server connection was lost.
"Emergency" reboot?
Next time give us five minutes to get our drones back into the bay and our ships docked please!
I lost three drones, not expensive ones, but they are hard to get where I'm now.
Besides, I agree with the opinion "please accumulate patches and don't shoot the server down every two weeks".
This behaviour is REALLY annoying. The upgrade to the new servers could have been done two weeks later as well and then in conjunction with this blood patch.
Again:
I AM annoyed by this.

...which is something I also don't understand (I mean the downtime). It's standard for almost 20 years now that one does not have to shutdown a database backend for backups.
And the other stuff can be done using so called "transactions".

Perhaps you are not getting the emergency part?
Perhaps you were not reading WHY this reboot was "necessary"? ;)
Edit: It apparently has something to do with some bugs in the character generation. Also not so "urgent" that it is an excuse for annoying people.

Originally by: Rodinmatar I have the same problem about that "Unable to connect to 87.237.38.200 on port 26000" message. CCP should always put a clear message on their site front page or some kind of server status like in most online games. Wouldn't be easier for everyone to know it is not our machine?
Second the motion, of having a server status (live update) link on the main Eve-Online Website.

Come on people. The downtime in eve is less than in most other. Look at eq and wow.
The reason for the shutdown was most likely not to annoye people, or what?

doesnt bother me that they had to take server down for emergency repairs, what ****ed me off is they didnt give me anytime to get to a safe spot, was in the middle of battle with npc, webbed scrammed and a battleship npc peckin on my hull, get the reboot warning and poof server goes down.........
that IMHO is bullsh!t give a man at least 5 min...... and of coarse if i loose my ship i am screwed......... THANKS CCP!
is it to much of a problem to give the players a little more warning than 60 seconds ? Do you guys even care?? ( probly not ) im just a paying customer, my opinon isnt worth crap.

I just want to take a moment to say, "All your base are belong to us" Seeing how I just enjoy reading forums and not ever taking part in one, I thought today would be a good day to lose my inhibitions. Before I go, i just want to tell all those people crying about downtime and skills, "All your base are belong to us" and i hope to move zig soon.

Originally by: OberFuhrer I would rather the money I pay them to go toward actually striving toward a goal of keeping the game up and online 24/7. I don't think that's asking a whole lot. After all, how many thousands of businesses across this entire planet rely on such availability?
At jobsite I worked 8 years ago, the company contracted out spare processor usage on their mainframes to other companies. In other words, this company charged X dollars/month to allow another company to load data onto their systems to be processed. If this company's network connection or internal systems went offline, it meant they lost a lot of money quickly.
But, CCP is charging me a steady fee regardless of the amount of downtime. Yes I suppose the old argument "I can go play somewhere else if I don't like it" comes into effect here, but if they are not told this is substandard quality of service, they will continue to operate in this manner.
I reiterate my previous post: make a list of enhancements or changes you want to do and roll them out perhaps once every couple months, not every other week!
I wouldn't call it "substandard qos", but I'd say "suboptimal use of available technology".
1. Concurring database access is NO PROBLEM with any of todays available database backends, even MS Access can do that.
2. You can even perform full database backups (although theres a performance hit, but that could be minimized when planning the agents to a time of day when there is only a small number of subscribers online).
3. Database operations can be encapsulated in so called "transactions" - and they don't interfere with each other (by definition - this is one of the reasons they were introduced in the 1970's!).
Only problem would be server sided software changes or maintenance of things that happen in memory tables, but as far as I understand the technology, there is nothing critical that can't be accomplished while the game is up and running.

Well, this would be much easier if there was a clock with the current gmt on the login screen. Would be nice to know when / how far 20:00 gmtis, from now.
That should be the least CCP could improve. |

Don't you dare compare the great EvE to that umentionable wannabe space MMO from that unmentionable wannabe MMO company. I suffered for 2 years playing that game, and EvE is far and above what "that other game" was. Patches that broke more than they fixed, patches that unbalanced things horribly, patches that added pitiful content, etc, etc, etc! With EvE's one shard setup, bugs and delays hurt more, but its what makes EvE worth playing. I would much rather have a little more downtime to fix the last bit of bugs than to suffer though bugs that break whole professions, and then take another week to patch the patch.
EvE has a LONG way to fall before it gets even CLOSE to the mess that SWG was. ___________________________________________________ "I'm an engineer, not a miracle worker!" - Scotty, Star Trek: The Original Series |

the people at CCP seem to do an awefull lot of work trying to keep us happy. Let them do their work!
@ ccp, what are you thinking?
1. shortly after a MASSIVE server park upgrade which wasn't really perfect yet.. it was waiting for trouble. 2. Check the concurrent online player stats for a minute and give the massive playerbase which seem to center arround EU primetime a brake for once. I'd love to see an update from 2 am till after regular downtime.
Created one of those cheap extra accounts just when we got the chance... and already lost a day of playtime :(
