Freighter pilots should be able to turn off colision detection and pwn smaller ships that are dumb enough to get in the way, 500m wide, 2km long.... yea hitting an intercepter bumping you should be like a Mazda Miata meeting a tractor trailer...

And even still, you are talking high sec, so frigates. It would take hours, if not days. And the npcs wouldn't have scramblers in 0.5, so the player could log off.
At least 1 gm has a different opinion on that; At least, his reply said that when i petitioned for it...

I saw a powerpoint presentation back when freighters came out. (bored ppl at work ftw)
The maths came to about 15 ships to kill a freighter. It looked pretty feasible assuming the gankers dont get target jammed.
It was pre - RmR so my gank bs could output 1,200dps with ease. 15 bs opening up after launching drones would have got a good few vollies off before Concord put the donuts down to start targeting.
We actually got together to do it a few times but the freighters were a bit rare back then and we never realised they never dropped no cans At one stage just before our gang formed up we scanned a freighter with 5.5 bill ISK worth of zyd in its hold.
If we'd have found a target with a ful gang I reckon we'd have killed it

id say ravens t1 kitted are your best bet.
4 dmg mod in low, warp desrupters/tank in mids.
20 ravens imo would do the trick, each one salvos for 5k nearly so should be an instapop. 10 ravens might be able to do it assumeing that they get 3 shots in each.
but we are talking high sp pilots.
average it out to 15 t1 kitted ravens, thats about 500mil isk. most freighters are uninsured so the pilot would loose more even if his cargo is empty.

However, they could be carrying something valuable enough to lose your BS's just to destroy. I know of many people who have frieghter alts in an NPC corp. And often the only way to destroy them is to suicide them. And if it hurts your enemy more then it does you, then go for it.

well if its a war target then by all means. i was talking about just ganking a random freighter isnt worth it. hard part is finding out who has alts.

infact if your BS insurace is about to run out anyway, and since insurance pays out more than the BS can be bought for currently. and if u fit t1 only, it could cost you NOTHING in real terms.
and corps tend to insure ships in one go, thus its likely that u could have 15BS with 5days insurace remaining.
in a case like that, it is infact almost no loss inflicted on yourselfs and large loss on the freighter pilot corp/allaince.
if u buy, insure, and pop on the same day u loose roughly 20mils per tier 2 BS. if insurance is about to go anyway, then u loose near enough nothing per ship

Out of all the scenarios described i'm thinking this is the most likely one. If you gank something in high sec space about 4-5 Concord battleships spawn + support X 40... O.o
Imagine the petitions from people warping to gate and waiting for the screen to load for abotu 30 minutes |

As you pointed out , its certainly feasable to gank a freighter. And indeed it may cost you nothing 'in real terms' ... but then why bother ? Theres no real motivation to go after a freighter unless its an alt of a war target or something similar. And you don't even really get the guarentee of killing it with less than 20 ships. Then no loot.
Its pointless.

This almost sounds like a joke
i can imagine someone going up and asking
"how many suicide kessies does it take to gank a freighter?"
insert silly response here ---------------------

if one could get 500 kestrels togather at one time i can think of better targets. such as a Dread or a Titan that has just spent its doomsday device. mind you 500 kestrel zerg would be a lag monster when all of them fire their missles or rockets(imagine the system load of tracking 2000 missles/rockets per volley in a small area).

But its not a joke.
It's evil being creative. As I said, if you dont get target jammed you could prolly do it.
It may be pointless but guess what? It's a game! A fact often overlooked.
