Has anyone got eve to work. The issue is windows vista uses dirextx 10 and eve-online detects it as 9 and you get a pop up window telling you to install directx 9b 0r 9c. I do0wnloaded and tried to install but vista will not allow you to install the older version of directx.

Vista uses a totally different driver model to ye olde xp so you can't go back to the older versions. Diretx 10 should expose interfaces for 9 to avoid any backward compatibility problems, if you see what I mean. Eve probably looks at the current version and decides it isn't 9b or 9c, rather than checking for anything > 9.

Vista is supposed to have a newer version of DX9 that is actually a lighter version, rewritten to be a bit more effeceint and make use to the new DX 10 calls if needed. DX10 is not backwardly compatable because they wre-wrote it from the core up to fix the bugs that exist in DX9 and down. The result is supposed to be a very nice speed boost and easier coding for the programmers.

Indeed. They removed the fixed function pipeline - so everything uses shaders. I believe Eve next generation graphics core will take advantage of this. X3 and this fantastic piece of work show what is possible using current technology.

You'll have to open regedit for this.
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\
Add a key called "Fonts" Value of this is "C:\Windows\Fonts" or wherever you installed it.
Once you do this, the game will start properly.

DX10 is suppost to be wonderfull in that its going to have very strict standards in how much Nvidia and ATI can tweak for it. ie it will probally be the end of "Optimized for Nvidia/ATi" because finally directx drivers will be the same.

You are a star, thanks!
I had eve working on a dubious WinXP Home - Vista 5308 upgrade without the hack. I reinstalled Vista clean and it no longer worked. The reg hack solved the problem.
Thanks again

BTW - When you say 'Wherever you installed it.' what exactly is 'it'?... wherever you installed vista I'm assuming?

Edited by: Snakebloke on 11/06/2006 23:41:18 I couldnt work out what Luka Liki meant at first but heres a screenie to help.
- you create the new key (rightclick etc) - higlight that key in the sidebar - right click the "default" file within it - and set the "value" field as "C:\Windows\Fonts"
that should do it

Heya,
Just to point something out: if you look in your screenshots, in the Name column your key has (Default). As the fix posted in this thread says, you should call it 'Fonts'. You can only give a key a name when you're creating it, unlike setting a value which you can do as often as you like. |

Right, good catch Emma. However, the registry isn't allowing me to rename "Default" to "Fonts". Only the key folder. Thoughts?

What all is doing wrong is choosing "add key". Just in the Shell Folder, you choose "add string", name it Fonts and write C:\Windows\Fonts.
Solved my problem, thx for the guide :)

Lots of issues with this, in the latest build even if your account is a member of the administrator group programs (sensibly) don't execute with full administrator privelidges
1. Install Eve from scratch. It won't run from a folder. 2. Do the reg hack above. 3. Right click on the eve shortcut on the desktop. Go to the compatability tab, choose "run this program as an administrator" under privelidge level.
Then run it.
You can then copy back all your cache folders so you don't have to sort through 8000 bookmarks to put them in folders

This is the correct hack. Don't create a new key. Right-click in an empty area and create a new string.
EVE is running very nicely on my Vista test system (Athlon 2800+, 1 GB). Performance is a bit off, but I attribute this to the fact that Vista takes up so much more resources than XP.
