If you've ever wondered how it would work on a crappy box, here it is:
Works just fine here (I get about 20-30 fps in space at 1152x864@24bit). I can pvp/npc np as long as I stay away from fleets, but then again it's hardly any diff in Windows, I lag (client fps lag) like crazy anyways.
Specs: OC'd AMD 1800XP 768 RAM GeForce 4 MX440 64Megs

~eve via latest cedega = 20-30 fps in station, 10-20 in space (not really playable)
~ eve + XP = 70-90 fps in stations, 40-50 fps in space
i've noticed my glxgears score is only about 3,300 so i checked out that SBA and fastewrites were on for my gfx card, they are and i'm using AGPgart + nvidia drivers
any further ideas on improving performance? (xorg.conf settings, krenel module settings, driver versions etc)
cheers and cAKe in advance
If you're using the kernel's agpgart then try using nvidia's via Option "NvAGP" "1" in the Device section of xorg.conf, or if you feel brave enough, get rid of AGP in kernel and it will default to nvidia's AGP. You can read more about it in README in the Appendix D. X Config Options.
I have never used AGPgart, always have it disabled and it's working perfectly on an ancient box, even playable in fleets.
As a reference, it's an AMD 1800+ XP (slightly OC'd), GeForce 4 MX, and I run it at 1152 x 864 @ 24bit and glxgears come up with 1.8k on a good day. I get about 20-35fps in space, easy playable, even works great in say 20-30 vs 20-30 fights, and a nice little lagfest in larger fleets. I play the game fullscreen at same res as desktop with all effects disabled and no sound.
There's also one thing, I have no idea which xorg vesion Ubuntu ships with, but there are some problems with 7.1 and lastest drivers. Some people report that it doesnt work at all and get lockups, but in my case it's just some font issues. 7.0 on the other hand should have no problems.

Btw, has anyone tried running it on a laptop with ATI card? I have no experiences with ATI cards under Linux since I've always had an nvidia card.
I've been looking at some laptops and it's really hard to find something with nvidia card and about 15" 1400x1050 LCD. There are a few ATI options, so I was wondering if anyone has any experiences and if it's even worth looking into, or should I continue looking for a nvidia based laptop.

Originally by: death2nite ok so i see you have the same slight jagged edge thing goin on that i do. i guess i have things as good as they will get which basically sucks cuz i shelled out alot of money for this video card a year ago, but i guess linux has a way to go before it can utilize graphics in games like windows can, for a free os that actaully works i guess its a small price to pay
I'm guessing linux and nvidia's driver have nothing to do with here. It's prolly the fact that you're using Cedega to run a native windows game. Try one of the games with native linux client (NWN, Quake, ...) and if it's still "screwed" up, I stand corrected ;).

Originally by: Sevarus James Well, unless something happens between Transgaming or CCP, all of us linux users are going to be in serious trouble....as in "set a LONG skill training" kind of trouble.
below highlighted in bold is the reason:
From the latest EVE news: <snip>
Unless wine's new patches come to the rescue, or transgaming gets out a good update, this will kill linux playability. Having attempted to install and run the Dragon test code for the last couple weeks, I can say that Cedega will NOT run with this.
There was mention in this thread earlier about wine getting very close to being able to run EVE, but nothing since.
JUST a heads up and warning for those following this thread.
Yup, nuked my windows partition few weeks ago and it seems like I'll be taking a long break from EVE when the Dragon client comes on TQ. Unless of course I get pleasantly surprised and Transgaming comes up with a fix.
Oh well, there's plenty of skills to max out I've been putting off ;)

Hopefully very soon the ATI owners will have performance that will rival exceed even the nvidia side...another reason I say this is that AMD who recently bought ATI are actually considering open sourcing large portions of the current "binaries" for the ATI card. This will almost CERTAINLY improve and improve DRASTICALLY this card's viability as a gaming card for linux.
<snip>
Any idea when? Are we talking it might happen this year?

Yeah, same here. Performance in deadspace is really bad, used to be better. It's ok in normal space flying about, deadspace is just nasty. Slideshow 4tl, but then again my box is maybe a bit better than a slide projector, so cant really complain ;)

Yup, just like sisi patches, dump file and kaboom. Oh well, guess it's time to take another break from EVE while they sort the stuff out. Hopefully it wont take too long because I have ships to blow up.

Seems like everyone's installing Windows, heh, I'm still stuck with 1 hour logins to change skills and I aint giving up. One of these days/weeks/months Transgaming gonna fix it, but if anyone wants to do something about Wine's support for EVE lemme know and I'll do all I can to help out.

I have an ancient box, so ok, I can deal with slow logins, the session change aint that bad, but the funny part is, if I switch to no-UI mode (Ctrl+Tab) the FPS aint really bad, it's bit worse than before but it would be playable. But as soon as I switch channels, open market or play with overview or whatever that pops up a window then it just freezes for ages.

Just did a quick test with Sisi patch 4562 and lemme tell you, it's working just fine, same as before all this hell broke loose.
Now all I can do is hope CCP gonna put it on TQ before I lose my mind ;)

I have a 24" acer ws display, so I do use all of it. 7600GT pci-e x2 dual core 3800 rig.
Well I guess it ain't that bad, I got used to it. It's a crappy box (Geforce 4 MX, XP1800+) and I do get color banding and bit choppy edges at 1152x864 on a ancient 17" CRT. And after I get hit few times with torps, the torp explosion effects just go nuts and display some random stuff.
And since the Dragon client I've had major issues with deadspace, it's literally 1-2 fps on a good day, usually a powerpoint slideshow, so I have to play with no effects ingame, no antialiasing and all those fancy features. But I got used to it, can't really complain, I'm happy I can play on Linux.
Small scale pvp works fine at about 10-15 fps and I don't really have the time to pay attention to details, and I do missions half asleep anyways ;)

Doubt they're gonna do it tomorrow, so my bet is on next Tuesday, unless they decide to break their Tuesday=patchday tradition.

It would be very nice, but I doubt it's ever gonna happen. They will continue to support Transgaming and that's about all I'm hoping for. I just wish they'd put the damn 4562 patch on TQ already so I could play again.
Though on the other hand, I'd be satisfied with a stripped down linux client with nothing but chat windows, neocom and overview. ;)

As soon as char selection pops up and it needs to show portraits it crashes.
Does anybody know what _might_ be wrong, or what info I need to supply you guys with in order to try and get that fixed? I want to get rid of windows.
No idea if it's an ATI issue or current client borkage. But dont even think about ditching windows partition coz I can guarantee you there will be issues in the future and you might end up w/o EVE for ages like I am now.

Originally by: farfrael Eve 4561 + Cedega 5.2.6 not working ATM as noted by everybody else Been like that for 2 weeks ... getting really annoying
The problems caused by Dragon got fixed in 48 hours, why is it taking so long this time? The problem seems to be known, where's the solution?
A quick workaround may be to stop forcing Linux users to use winXP mode. Who cares if you run XP or 95 compatibility mode or am I mising something obvious?
Anyone has an idea regarding what we can do to get CCP/Transgaming to work on it?
The problem is within in EVE client itself. It has been pointed out by Transgaming staff and has been fixed already on Sisi. It's just that CCP doesn't wanna release the fix for it for TQ just yet. If not sooner, once Kali hits Sisi, we're gonna get the patch with all the fixes they're working on atm for TQ, and that's when I'm realistically expecting to get EVE working with Cedega again.

So, apparently kali may hit Sisi in about 2 weeks. And then I'm thinking they might release a patch for Dragon they've been messing around all this time. Anyone got any concrete info if we're gonna get the patch to finally fix this issue before Kali hits TQ?

Edited by: Yaevep on 21/11/2006 00:00:37 Just tried the sisi patch (27483) with wine .9.25 + Elfe's patch. And I'll be ****ed, it works ;) Havent tested much, just tried to do some belt ratting and apart from some graphics glitches it works nicely. Performance is about the same I get with Cedega on TQ, so no change there. (Crappy box, we're talking single diget fps here in a belt ;))

If you have eve voice enabled, then disable it in prefs.ini with voiceenabled=0, that fixed it for me.
