I sure hope they will do something about the lack of FPS in windowed mode, until then I will still have to reboot into windows for EVE Don't want to play with crappy performance with this flashy videocard. No, not even when it concerns linux

Edited by: rig0r on 03/04/2006 15:34:03 Sounds fishy. According to WineHQ appdb they have only recently (last couple of days) made some progress with wine CVS. It runs, but still has crash issues. Progress is being made though.

Is there a way to enable V-Sync ? I know I have this option in EVE under windows, but can't find it in EVE under cedega. Maybe I can hack something in the .ini files ?

I found it. 2 issues remain:
- poor FPS in fullscreenmode, I don't get more than 30FPS in space. I have an Nvidia 7800GTX card, running the latest Nvidia drivers. - if I run EVE, then quit (ctrl-q) and start it again, it shows the splash screen for about 10 seconds, then it dies. I have to actually logout and login to be able to play again. There are no remaining processes or tempfiles and EVE seems to exit normally.
I'm running a 2.6.16 kernel at the moment with SMP and preemptive settings.
What kind of kernels are you guys running ?

Originally by: Anun Hen Hello rigor,
cool to see another Linux user out there. FYI, using 2.6.16.9 on slackware with cedega 5.1 and engine 5.1.3 with a Geforce4 128MB, 1.5Gig of RAM, the latest nvidia proprietary drivers on fullscreen 1280x1024, HDD properly configured with Hdparm everything works like a charm (good FPS, no loading problems etc) .
Appart from some small issues (408 years, weird colors for security status on the map) works as well as under windows.
Can you give more information about your setup so we can help? what version of cedega are you using? are you sure it is installed properly? did you use a package or did it manually? how much ram have you got (EVE is a HOG for RAM)?
have you changed kernel recently? did you try going back to your old kernel? does it make any difference?
- point 1: don't see whay it would be kernel related. try playing around with the cedega/wine settings and eve settings (color, resolution etc). Is your HDD properly configured (hdparm)? this might explain long load times and stutter. - point 2 seems really weird, sounds like a problem with wine/cedega not Eve. Nothing to do with the kernel I would say. Check you properly installed cedega/wine
I'm running cedega 5.1.3, have 1GB of ram. I installed cedega using the .tgz file. Kernel version change didn't have any impact on my FPS. The scheduler kernel settings do have impact on FPS btw, try it sometime :P I am running fullscreen in 1600x1200, I also have a second 1280x1024 monitor connected. My hd params are not the issue I think, the loading times are OK, it's just the FPS that's low. I don't see much disk activity when ingame.
I'll try reinstalling cedega and see if that helps. Thanks, and will let you know the results

Well, I reinstalled Cedega to see if that would solve my performance issues and the funny 'run-EVE-once-then-need-to-re-login-to-play-again' problem.
Unfortunately it didn't help :( Any more ideas ?

So I finally found out what caused the problem where I could run EVE once, then had to logout and in again to be able to play again. It is caused by the Xinerama extension. When I disable this or switch to Twinview the problem goes away
So I figured I'd use Twinview, but, I run into an old problem when I do that. I have one 1600x1200 LCD and a 1280x1024 LCD. I want EVE on fullscreen on the 1600 with the 1280 still active. Problem is EVE/Cedega now only lists 2880x1200 as a possible resolution
Relevant xorg.conf section:
Quote:
Section "Device" Identifier "nv0" Driver "nvidia" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Screen 0
VideoRam 524288
Option "TwinView" Option "MetaModes" "1600x1200,1280x1024" Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP-0,DFP-1" Option "RenderAccel" "true" Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" Option "NoLogo" "1" EndSection
Running nvidia 8762 drivers on a Geforce 7800GTX.

Fixed
Quote:
Section "Device" Identifier "nv0" Driver "nvidia" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Screen 0
VideoRam 524288
Option "TwinView" Option "MetaModes" "1600x1200,1280x1024; 1600x1200,NULL; NULL,1280x1024" Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP-0,DFP-1" Option "RenderAccel" "true" Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" Option "NoLogo" "1" EndSection
So now I have EVE running perfectly on a dualhead setup. All I can say is a fast CPU makes a LOT of difference. The game runs at very decent FPS rates right now (30-60 in space, 70-120 in station). I will do some more tests and add some screenies soon.

Fyi, I do not have this problem after upgrading to 5.2.2. Twinview still works like a charm and I can still access my 2nd screen (as in my sig screenshot).

Small update.
I upgraded to Xorg 7. Using NVidia's twinview, running EVE fullscreen on screen 1 while still having screen 2 accessible doesn't work anymore. Screen 2 is being disabled no matter what I try. So I switched to running EVE in windowed mode and was surprised to find out the FPS is actually very good. I get 30-70FPS in space, and 70-100 in station. I set EVE in cedega to Desktop mode in 1400x1050, and EVE at fullscreen at the same resolution. I also enabled the 2 new video settings Severus mentioned in his post (Dynamic VBO and Index VBO), seems to work fine.
One problem that remains is that I am unable to copy things from EVE to my desktop and vice-versa. E.g. 'Copy URL' or 'Copy text' from EVE to Firefox doesn't work. I take it you lot have the same problem ?
Sig screenie updated btw.

I personallly use a 24" WS Acer, so that is all 'off' over here. Running EVE FS normally, and I have my hotkeys for desktop switching set to alt+number so moving around is a snap.
Gentoo indeed =) I was really suprised with the FPS, ofcourse it's not as fast as running fullscreen 1600x1200, but the difference is only 10FPS or so.

Originally by: Taevin Well, I just gave EVE and Cedega another go on my Gentoo installation today. Everything seems to be working great (well except for the silly things like corporation membership length :D)!
A significant, although not show-stopping, problem I'm having is that the character screen is extremely laggy. Actually it's so slow that lag may not be the proper term for it :) Coupled with the mouse bug (which, because of the extreme sluggishness, is too hard to fix at the character screen), it can easily take a minute or two to actually select my character. Then, when I finally do select it, it can take about 2-5 minutes to log in.
Everything else seems pretty solid and I'm getting good framerates (about 100-120 in station and 70-90 in space). Any ideas about this character screen problem or is it another widespread and unresolved problem that everyone has?
Also, sorry if someone else has already had this problem and I missed the post about it in this thread. I read through it all again but 20 pages is a lot and I could have overlooked something.
I have that when I have EVE set in Desktop mode in a resolution different from what I have selected in EVE. So this only is a problem when I am fiddling around with settings and stuff. Maybe it has something to do with that.
Apart from that I have no issues at all running in Gentoo. Well the mousefocus thingy, but that's just a matter of tapping alt-enter twice on the logon screen. And the date/timer bug is still there. Gotten used to it already ... I am even running 2 windowed EVE clients on my system now, one on each monitor, with no FPS penalty at all. Looking at CPU usage, I see that each EVE client is running on a different core (AMD64 4800+). Truly amazing ! You need 2 seperate EVE installs in cedega for this to work btw.

So the 8/22 date for us who DID upgrade to other solutions..........means a seriously long skill train.
Of course Kieron hinted so smugly after E3 that we linux and mac types would have good news coming...........I can't imagine that THIS is what he was referring to? -sigh.

This means even if we're "down" after the update.....it won't be very long until things get back ta "NIX-normal".
Thus endeth the linux news update.....more as we get it.

Hmm I'm still a bit sceptical tbh. Seeing is believing, as promises have been made before. I still have an XP laptop I can use, but I might as well just take a break from the game until it is fixed.
On the other hand, reading the general discussion thread, I was suprised how many already play EVE on linux. This number can only grow and cannot be ignored by CCP.
Perhaps we should all file support request at transgaming ? But I am not sure how and where to do that.

Tried .925 with Elfe's latest diff last night.
Some issues:
- d3dx warning/error at startup - station: when rotating the ship, the light that falls on the icons in ship/item view causes the icons to go completely white with a certain rotation - station: icons get drawn on the bottomleft of the screen briefly before being drawn on the correct spot (in items/ships view on the right) - poor FPS (about half of what cedega produced with RMR)
I am very pleased that Elfe got Revelations to work with wine tho, where Cedega until today fails to produce a decent patch. Makes me want to ditch Cedega completely... The low FPS with wine is a showstopper for me tho. Elfe, do you have any idea what could possibly cause this FPS drop ?

Gave 0.9.31 a go, what a difference ! Finally, FPS rates with wine have reached an acceptable level. I run about 70-80fps in station and 25 - 60 in space. This is with wine running a virtual desktop of 1400x1050 and eve running fullscreen inside that.
The only issues I have atm are:
- double mousecursor - few graphical glitches - unable to run 2 clients at the same time, the moment the second launches its login screen, the first client dies
Very nice to see Elfe's patches finally made it in.
Keep up the good stuff Elfe

I'm not sure about all the cedega settings. I can say however if I have the affinity set to win2k or winxp it happens both times. As for the GDDB profile there isn't one for eve on cedega or at least not one supported by transgaming unless I've missed something.
There is a GDDB profile actually, I suggest you try that. If you don't see it, your cedega install may be borked.

Cool, will try that when it comes. BTW, I noticed that two clients with wine consume less CPU than 2 clients with cedega. Cedega always maxes out to 100% usage per CPU core per client. Looks like wine does something a bit smarter than cedega does

Sounds like you need to reinstall gcc. I don't know Ubuntu tho, I take it there is some sort of package manager.
So I tried Cedega and Wine (.39) + patch git today, for the first time I can say that Wine's FPS rate is higher than Cedega's FPS rate. The difference is about 10FPS. Also, the double mousecursor bug was fixed.
/me gets ready to boot Cedega for good

No problems with Alsa here (0.9.39 on Gentoo).

Wine .44 works fine as well and is getting better and better. I canceled my transgaming subscription some time ago as I don't really need it anymore.

Gave sisi patch a go with wine-git, get splash, EULA and logon screen but it crashes the moment I put focus on the username field. Same without sound disabled.

Tried wine-git on trinity engine. Stuff I found:
- sometimes a short UI lockup when closing dialogboxes (about 1-2sec) - running a second eve client is almost impossible because of FPS lag, had no issues with this before (I could even run 3 clients at the same time). My cores do not hit 100% but about 80-90% each. This is no different from before.
Keep up the good stuff \o/

Ok, it seems taskset is mandatory with the new engine, I didn't need this before. Anyway, binding each client to a core works pretty well ! I do not see the FPS drop Sevarus is seeing, actually I get about 20FPS more than before !
about 80-100FPS in station (was about 60-80) about 40-60FPS in space (was 20-40)
GeForce 7800GTX.

Interesting. At what point exactly do you disable and re-enable your nic to get the client going in wine-git ? I'll give this a go tonight, the cedega client is pretty much unusable due to random crashing and well wine is better anyways

I had similar result with the NIC flip, I'll try the premium download too.
In the meantime, instead of flipping your NIC, try renaming your /etc/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf.whatever prior to start, and rename it back when the loginscreen shows. That gave me similar results to the NIC flip but is a lot less drastic

Found it. I am running Apache on my box, so EVE didn't hang on eve-online http access this time but on localhost http access I stopped Apache for now. I think it is safe to say the wine bug is somewhere in the http fetch part, not in the nameresolving part.
Done a few jumps, no FPS drop. I did notice some weird scheduling behaviour tho when running 2 clients. The focused client always runs at full FPS, the unfocused client runs at about half FPS. When you move your mouse over the unfocused client, FPS goes up :P When you stop moving your mouse, it drops again. As this only happens on the unfocused client it's not that much of a problem. Taskset doesn't help in this case.
In comparison to the cedega client:
- FPS is much higher (about 20-40FPS) - ship icons show properly - client doesn't get stuck after ctrl-q (my cedega client wouldn't exit properly and leave a black wine screen) - client doesn't crash randomly - minimap (f11) still doesn't work

Ok after doing some more tests it seems there still is a drop in FPS after a session change, I noticed it after jumping or docking in a station.

regedit and poke around the software/wine/Direct3D area for the the offscreenrendering setting, if it's pbuffer set to fbo that fixed the hooge frame drop for me.
Did you test this in empire? even with fbo buffer i had the frame drops there.
Initially I didn't have fbo set and had a serious drop in FPS with every jump. Enabled fbo, did around 6 jumps with no drop. When I docked up however, FPS dropped from 100 to 20 and stayed that way (after undocking as well).

Stick it in your wine-git directory and run
# patch -p1 < trinity.diff
Then recompile wine.

Originally by: Veskya Try adding "87.237.39.200 localhost" to your hosts file. EVE downloads data for the billboards from a webserver, that is one of the IP's, im not sure yet if there are others. Once blocked there are no more slowdowns ^^
This seems to work for me as well. Just did 6 jumps back and forth on a route that gave me the FPS drop, no problems now. Odd, why would it fetch webdata before actually looking at the billboard (read news button)

Right. Didn't realize they were downloaded through http. How about character portraits then
Anyway, no more FPS drop \o/
Also tried wine git 0.9.51 but didnt notice any difference. Premium content still does not work very well for me, don't see my own ships, lots of gfx errors.

Those who have premium running, do you have problems with rendering as well ? For me, larger objects like my thanatos and station exteriors do not render properly. Also the planet at the login screen (EVE logo) has a lot of flickering going on around the edges.
Is this something that can be fixed by tweaking registry settings ? If so, please share

Originally by: Suki Kamir This is all good news but, I don't suppose anyone knows a sane way to install wine-git so that it doesn't destroy the cedega version of wine?
Unfortunately I can't find the Cedega .dat file so if I screw something up with Wine, I have to download the whole damn thing again from transgaming, which resulted in over 6GB of downloads last weekend.
Is there a prefix we can pass to configure to that it installs wine-git into a different location to where cedega installs it's version of wine?
Thanks
Suki
I install wine-git in $HOME/apps/wine so it doesn't conflict with the 'stable' wine that comes from Gentoo portage.
Just run
# configure --prefix=$HOME/apps/wine
in your wine git directory. Your $HOME/.wine dir will still be shared between your distro's wine installation and wine git though, but this hasn't been a problem for me.

Originally by: Suki Kamir OK I built wine on 64bit Ubuntu Gutsy today but when I try and install the Premium Content client I get a dialogue box saying it needs Admin access to install (a windows dialogue box).
I can't seem to get past this problem, has anyone tried to install the Premium Client as opposed to installing the classic client and then updating it with premium content?
If so, how did you get past this Admin access issue?
Thanks
Suki
Had the same problem. Didn't find a fix and installed classic + premium upgrade.
