TL;DR:
- add to the tactical overlay a representation of ships' speed in the form of speed vectors (a segment originating from the ships of length proportional to speed) well visible at any level of zoom.
- This feature should be an option of the esc menu: de-select to save on client cpu, remove cluttering, ...
- The overview should have a new filter to decide what ships show the speed vector (out of fleet, reds, dramiels only
...) and the segment would be of the same colour as the top corresponding overview colour (fleet/same militia/same corp/etc)
>Original thread in the old forums< - 5 pages of basically thumbs-ups!
When doing a 1v1, I usually 'look at' my target to see what he's doing and anticipate the reaction time. When the numbers grow, I switch the look at between the various enemies, but it becomes impossible after a little number of targets.
Resorting only to the excel style overview, with its lagged and sporadic changes, is not enough, and also the overview is hard to follow when there's more than a handful of ships in the encounter. A graphic overview - in addition to the table - is needed.
Solution: ships show a vector that points in the direction where they're going, of length proportional to the ship's speed: a speed vector. Zoom level does not affect the vector length. This permits, at a glance, to see where everybody's moving to, even if zoomed out. A shortcut key to turn on and off the tactical overlay would be welcome.
Note that in every SCI-FI movie, anime or comic there always is a 3d tactical overview that shows the battle inside the battle deck/command area etc. How is it possible to not have something that cool!?
Possible variants: - smoke trails. The problem is that smoke trails disappear zooming out, I want this to be visible at large zoom levels to help small gang warfare. The two don't exclude each other anyway! Also, a vector causes much less performance issues.
Possible problems: - lag -- server side lag: none. The vector is a client only thing, the client builds it based on info it already gets, no new server coding is needed -- client side lag: possible. To avoid it completely, add an option under graphics in the esc menu to remove the speed vectors.
- crowded overview: possible. The overview filter should accommodate a new option to extend filters done for the overview to the speed vectors. You could then show or not the speed vectors based on the friendly/unfriendly/in fleet/... status of the ships.
Please support me! I am for small gangs warfare! |

Supported. It's really sad that brackets in EVE don't give any kind of indication of direction and speed. |

Supported.
The existing overview, and the whole O/V-based UI, is clunky, laggy, buggy, primitive, and just bad...really, really bad.
(Oh, I might add, the fact that it takes up so much screen real-estate is also grating, not to mention immersion-breaking--I wanna see space, and **** flying in space, not squint through a bunch of nested Access tables to kinda see it )

If you go on Sisi right now, engine trails indicate this fairly well. |

I just want a tactical overlay overhaul to make it well... useful. The few additions coming in Crucible are nice (i.e. seeing what the blast radius will be fore a bomb) but it doesn't provide much useful, if any, information in battle, except weapons range but even this may require you to reposition to camera a lot making the overview more useful. |

Support overview changes! Overview must not only be in a table but also in a 3D view! Maybe we can have an option to display some numbers under brackets (distance or other parameters at choice). Additionally please let us open several overview windows with different settings and make D-Scan setting independent from current overview settings. Please display current D-Scan range on solar system overview. Please implement text highlighting in overview table, when some parameters go out of bounds: for example when radial speed is greater than current weapon tracking (or somthing). Display on 3D tactical view ships that webbify, scramble, neut, attack you (make all this as options to display or not). What else? |

Wondering if this new feature would consume a lot of server or client resources. I mean, asking for a new feature is easy if you don't know whether it'll set their War Against Lag back a year.
Otherwise, yes. Overview needs some sprucing up. It functions. It works. But...it's ugly and in the way most of the time. I find I can't watch all the pretty stuff they've put in the game because I'm too busy staring at the overview list. I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs. |

Server - nothing new required, all that I propose is calculated from what info the client already has. This proposal should therefore not have any consequence on the servers. Client - I have a slow machine myself and that is why I asked to make all of this optional. It can all be filtered and in case of a sudden heavy load situation (grid loading after jump or undock, etc) you can always disable the tactical display.

Great Idea. I prob wouldn't use it because I prefer the scalar quantities already available in overview, but then again, I have never had the option of vectors

I wish I could get brackets for user-created bookmarks.
