We all know that many people skoff at the idea of useing destroyers. Frigates are 50% cheaper, or more. Cruisers are more powerfull for double/tripple the cost.
But Most of the destoyers fit a nice niche in the game.
they are cheap, they can(usually) fit 8 weapons) not too fast, not too slow.
They may not be suitable for a newbie with no skills, due to the power/sheilds/armor limitations.
But are there any vets with 10's of millions of SP's, who find that with most skills at lvl 5 the Destoryer is suitable for small scale warefare?

I love them.
Though I won't fly them unless I'm in fleet. They're just too vulnerable for solo play, imo.

Vets normally use a stethescope? surely? and maybe a thermometer.
But yeah, I agree with above. They are spectacular at laying down ranged/sustained fire, but cannot take much damage themselves.

Dar har har.
Seriously though, I keep a Cormorant loaded with T2 125 rails in the hanger for fleet antifrig, and it can be quite gruesome, but I get scared ****less if I loose the escort.

What the lady said. They're great, but I probably wouldn't want to fly one without any backup. The Catalyst, for instance, is like glass. ;)

Love my thrasher, handles 2s and a couple of lvl 3 missions no problem. It is also great for handling the frigs and intereptors (and then moving up to the cruisers) of the complexes, and tougher missions, but it cannot tank. It has just enough defense to warp out, as long as I do it immediately, and don't wait around to see if I can kill the guys in time. If I draw more aggro than what I am shooting at, I am outta there.

I haven't yet trained up T2 rails (enjoying the blasters and drones much more), but I'd still like to kit out a Cormorant to lob Spike S out to some 60-90km, just for the "WTF?" factor.
As-is, 150mm Railgun 1s land a 27km optimal w/ Destroyers 5. Fun thing to fly into an Empire belt when you're bored. ----------------------------------

destroyers are pure sex
they could however use a few small tweaks to their surivability.
But they are very versatile and can pack some nice suprises!

Interdictors are the climax of frigate tech. And they are tech 2 destroyers.
An interdictor can scramble better than a squad of interceptors, is agile as a assault frig, and has more firepower than any of the frigs. You can mod it for speed, firepower, EW. All it cant do is tank, but then again, no frig can tank that well, it can just tank enough to not go pop with one volley-hits.
If i was to ever go the frig route, interdictors would be it.
So, yes, destroyers can be awesome, but only as tech 2. The tech 1 ones are pretty useless, scince there are so many ships that are good at anti-frigate combat like frigs, dests, cruisers,BCs, you can even setup a battleship to kill frigs with its smartbombs.

They are good ships but require teamwork.
They're expensive when fitted with t2 (When did small guns get so pricy), however if you fit for tech one and fly with a gaggle of friends you can easily be a cheap damage dealer.
There only real problem is a very slow warp speed, if it were bumped up to lik 5 AU/sec it wouldn't be so annoying ot bring them on a patrol.

IMHO Destroyers are good for escort work (when you know you aint gonna be primaried) and for portable damage, Cormorant and the thrasher make the best escorts (due to thier range and alpha strike) and the Catalyst and the coercer are best at portable damage (seriously 8 ion blasters aint nothing to sneeze at, and most of the time they'll focus on your friends in inties before you).

I never flown destroyers but now that i fly interdictors a lot i think destroyers could be damn useful in smaller gangs too. Solo i would never tough a destroyer. They die too fast. In a gang their firepower can be a nice addition though.

Nah, Destroyers are pretty useless. I'd rather use a T1 frig. They are just too weak and not worth it. No one should bother with them.
But uh just go ahead and leave them in the game, they are pretty...

Since I got destroyers 5 for dictors and started thinking about getting some ways down the minmatar path (have been amarr specializing but I want a little bit of versatility) and got small projo 5 I've been flying a thrasher now and then. It's a fun little ship to fly with 7 250mm artillery, a mwd, and a 400mm plate it's armor gets up to around 1400 and it still goes around 1500m/s. Can hit a fair ways out and/or do a nice bit of alpha strike damage. All in all very versatile little ship. So yes, vets do fly destroyers, but more as a cheap throw-away ship than as a main focus. ---------------------------------- "There's no +6 Sword of WTFPWN in Eve." - Er... Yeah, it's one of those ships that if you see someone targeting you, get out of dodge. Though if you don't equip them with T2, they are good cheap fun.

It looks like a fully trained Cormorant will make a curious sniper. Basic optimal range for T1 frig rails is 9-10 km (9 for plain-vanilla, 10 for named). The ship gives you +10%/skill range bonus, being a DD it gives you a +50% range bonus and let's say standard iron ammo gives you +60% bonus.
10 * 1.5 * 1.5 * 1.6 = 36 km optimal range.
Hmm...

Destroyers are totally sweet.
The downside is you might want to get a decoy if youre going to attack something bigger than a frigate.
When fitting 8 duals2's on a coercer I can seriously lay the hurt on someone.

While I do not have more then 2.4m skill points I'm a huge fan of the Coercer.
I assume more of a close range support roll for larger ships with slower tracking. I'm normally fitted with 5-6 Medium Pulse Laser tech2's, 2-3 nos', a tech 2 AB with a tech 2 armor repairer. (around 1100 armor)
I can solo in .1 as long as I am VERY carefull agasint spawns with 4 cruisers. Yeah, I can even take out 3 BC's (blood bishops) in my ship. Just have to pay attention.
They can fill a specific roll quite nicely and can even generate a "OMGWTF!1" when piloted by someone who knows how to use them.
In a nut shell it's all about what you want to use them for.

Hmm...
Best named 150mm has 14km base optimal and you forgot the skill which gives 5% per level so with iron you are looking at 55-65km optimal depending on how expensive guns you want to use. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They have to uses. A Thrasher with a T2 loadout is tons of fun. They are cheap, can fit 7-8 guns, and (at least in the Thrashers case) have good cap. I wouldn't take out out solo over a AF, but in a fleet, they fill pretty much the same role. Destroyers are cheap, and will blow if they are looked at the wrong way. AFs cost quite a bit more, but can take some damage.

Cormorant = anti-pod 7x 125mm, 1x cloak. (mixing lead and antimatter) 1x 20km scram, 1x web, 2x sensor booster Low's to suit.
Unless you're at a gate, if you're within 20km of a pod when the ship lows, you've got a guarenteed pod kill. Greatest fun in 0.0.
