Reason it does poor in the US is simple.
A. No advertising really.
B. We Americans tend to play faster shooter based games based more on personal skill than luck and character abilities. I unfortunately can't stop laughing at how stupid characters look when they move around (such as strafing or moving while crouched) in a FPS. As a rule, you see more children playing RPG's nowadays in the states, as the teens and adults regularly havent the patience for them. EVE, no matter how powerful you think you are in it, is based entirely on your character as opposed to you, being an FPS, and it removes any real reason to smack, it was all your set up and skills, aint like you just demolished someone at street fighter. We Americans love our smack. (well.. most do.)
I.E. If I slam you with a Mossy in P.S. while you're in a friggin' sky guard, or rip you to shreds in a Catapult when you're off totin' some Mad Cat Mk.II in MechWarrior, the smack is worth it. If you're anti-battle ship interceptor defeats my anti-cruiser/battleship battle ship, you just happened to come across the right line up of modules.
On a side note, I have never seen a japanese player, which really downs the playability of the game for me. Heard rumors of how good they were at video games. Didn't believe those rumors.. but that view has been altered lately after actually watching how they play.
As for US vs UK, I'll be fitting my PS2 for internet use soon, if any of you Europeans want to try me at Armored Core I'd be happy to oblige. It is unfortunately the only on-line player-skill based game I have at the moment.
EVE is fun, don't get me wrong, but it's not what's currently 'in' with the US Market, although we do have a large MMOG base, and I think if advertised, many of them would move to EVE. I did take a glance at Planet Side and WoW briefly before joining EVE but chose this for it's potential fleet battles... but there is no actual glory in this game, and there is even less honor in it's players.
Then again if more of us 'yanks' joined you'd probably have a pirate population boost faster than a (insert any given interceptor here and 'with afterburners on' to sound even more like the dork I am for spending time enhancing a fictional character instead of having my own life. Yay me and my geekdom) , so much for that honor theory. -_-;
Thusly. EVE will never do well in the US. Not with out serious advertising and something to draw us away from our ever precious shooters. Aaaand that's my rambling for today. ------------------------------------------------------- |
