Howdy all.
If you were to design a 4-ship fighting fleet, what ships would you choose if you (and your three buddies) have the skills necessary to pilot them. The four of you will almost always be flying together in all kinds of PVP situations. The ships will rarely operate independently. We're good at teamwork. 2 of us are powergamers and are capable of finesse. The other two are competent, but do not like playing any overly-complex roles. None of us have any particular egos, but we want an effective fighting force.
Now, what ships would you choose and how would you outfit them? And, how expensive would your proposal be (in rough terms). Please explain your choices.
A little background: My buddies and I are currently in Iraq and will be returning home in 2-3 months. My cousin in the states is playing this game and some of us have decided to join too. Since we are already so far behind on skills and such, we've all created accounts now (while we are still in Iraq), and my cousin will powerlevel our characters for the upcoming two months. That puts us in the interesting position of paying a monthly subscription for a game we've never seen. We get to level up all our skills without ever having to worry about getting "bored" or not having a viable character for the first month or two while developing learning skills and other essentials first.

One interceptor pilot, one battlecruiser pilot, one covert ops pilot, and one a pure DPS cruiser who moves to battleships later to take over tank from the BC. Interceptor tackles, BC adds DPS and gang skills, cov pilot scouts and the cruiser/BS pilot tanks and provides DPS.
This thread is likely to get bogged down in racial choices for the roles, but thats the starting point I'd use.

Roaming/ganking? 4 Vagabonds
Instapopping BS? 4 tempests
Close range? 4 ravens or 4 domi or a mix, hopefully soon 4 blasterthrons (fingers crossed)
All around, fantastic, cruise around owning everything? 3 cruise ECM ravens, 1 vagabond

One of the best combinations for 4 ships on their own would be:
one tackler (interdictor?) one damage dealer (bs or HAC) one tanker (bs, HAC, BC) one ecm guy (lots of choice)

These are all 2-3 month old toons with zero game, so a lot of these suggestions are a touch long term goal/pie in the sky. See my original post...

dont think any small fleet can be as scary to meet as a fleet of recons.

Recon ship - EWAR Command ship - DMG/tank Interdictor - so the above ones can lock it before it warps away. Covert ops. - so you dont run into a 50-man blob all of a sudden.
Highly expensive fleet though, you can forget about magic insurance and cheap fits. ^_^ --------------- VIP member of the [23]

*edit* Arbis for EW support (take your pick, really. One with ecm, the other with tracking disruptors, mix and match, whatever.) Vigilant for damage malediction for tackling

4 ecm ravens > 4 recons, by a lot. Unless the rook gets some lucky jams on all 4 ravens.

against another 4 man fleet, i'd choose:
1x Scorpion 1x Raven 1x Taranis 1x Buzzard
Tactics: Use the Buzzard as a warp-in point. Taranis lock's one enemy down at a time, the Scorp keeps every enemy from locking (or tries to anyways), and the Raven dishes out the damage.
Don't worry, your sig is safe...wait...oops. --Jorauk |

I'm thinking roles to fit ships into would be more helpful than listing random ships that he might not be able to get yet or know their purpose in the team.
My suggestion would be
Two Tacklers One pure damage dealer One support(EW,Ranged Fire,Tanker Booster,Cap Booster) "Big guns and heavy armor what else is there?"

Edited by: Blodrin on 09/03/2006 23:15:51 Most of recommendations for an ideal 4-ship fleet fall along the lines of:
1 Tackler 1 Tank/DMG 1 EW 1 ??? (covert/tackler/EW/tank/DMG)
Covert is picked most often for the fourth guy, but some of you recommended doubling up on one of the other types of ships. (With 2 tank/dmg instead of one, most recommended that the ships be further specialized to differentiate two roles)
OR
4 Recon ships (recon = covert?)
OR
Instead of just 1 specialized EW ship, give some EW capability to 2, 3, or even all 4
I think that's the general gist. Three main strategies, but EVERYBODY has a preference for the best ships in each. There are a few favorites that keep popping up, but the variety speaks well of the devs.

Well if you're talking short term for new chars, maybe:
1 Rifter to tackle 1 Blackbird for EW support (or maybe a Celestis with sensor dampners?)
Then pick 2 from the following for some damage:
Rupture (with AC's and a gyro or two) Thorax (with blasters) Omen (in a gank setup, look at the sticky threads) Caracal (with heavies and bcu's) Vexor (with some med nos and an assortment of light and medium drones)
That'd be pretty effective I reckon and cheap compared to some suggestions so far. At a complete guess, maybe under 30 mil to buy them, insure them and fit them all, assuming you don't get exspensive named/T2 stuff. You don't mention what sort of targets you're after, but that gang would be able to handle most things. Going up against more than one BS might be a problem though.
