Do they?
Also, what about the other races in the game? Some place names sound kinda Finnish, others sound Dutch. What's the story?
Also, can someone direct me to a website that details the recent history (i.e. the last 100 years) of the Eve world?

They do not. But the Gallente RPers who use french words merely mean to portray they are using Gallente expressions instead of the common language everyone uses.
In basic terms though, no earth language survived. _____________________________________

No, Gallente are just descendants of some people who colonized some place and they were descendants fron the french or something.
I feel I need to go read the background section again...

In all likelihood the Gallente view French the same way most Scots seem to view Gallic.
That is, a dead language spoken by a handful of strange old men who live in remote areas, as well as something the television spends way too much time on.

Don't you mean the Gaelic? Gauls were the ones in France, I thought Scots were descendants from the Gaels.

Scots are descendants from the Picts if I recall correctly .

It says everything that I'm not sure how to spell the modern form of Gaelic.
It's pronounced with a hard A, I know that.

No, scots are mainly descended from the 'Scotti' - a tribe that colonised from northern part of Ireland in the dark-ages. I think the picts were either wiped out or assimilated into the new culture. And saying 'Gallic' is a way of differentiating the scots tongue from the irish 'Gaelic'.
Back on topic - i'd tend to agree that whatever the Gallente speak will be very far removed from French - but it will have some similar roots and words - think about it like a modern english person trying to understand Saxon.

About the only remnants of French still to be seen in the Gallente Federation are the names of star systems (Pulin, Leremblompes, Luminaire ... they make sense if you pronounce them in the French style).
What actual language they speak probably can't even be represented using Roman characters. Imagine trying to explain to a caveman from 20,000 years ago how to speak English; that's how they would view us. ________________________________________________

Not French, of course, no. The language would be a derivative of French. The Gallente are not French but they are Frenchified. Hence system names are Frenchish, region names are Frenchish, agent names (at least the surnames) are Frenchish, the university's name is Frenchish ... none of those things dates back to the time when the French were around in the EVE cluster, they represent the lingering cultural influence in the Gallente culture of that primordial French influence. So while the Gallente are not "France in space", they nevertheless have many lingering French influences in the culture, and it's safe to assume that some of these have survived linguistically as well, while the language spoken is clearly not intelligible as French. ---------------------------

its true they descended from the french. But bear in mind languages change all the time [look at todays youth culture compared to when you were young]. And this colonisation happend a long time ago so the language will be nothing like modern french.
For an example look at old medevil english i watched a documentry where someone as an example quoted a poem in old english......I couldnt understand 1 word of it
Some examples bold is the translation
monegum mµg¦um, meodosetla ofteah many warriors, took their mead-benches
gomban gyldan. ¦µt wµs god cyning! and yield to him. He was a good king!
weox under wolcnum, weor=myndum ¦ah, waxed under the heavens, prospered in glory,
This language is just 700 year old english.

Note to self; Drop 'merde' more often in conversations.
I'd prefer the gallente ships to be named in french though rather than some lame-o mythology theme as is now. The Mirage or Sacre Bleu, now there's something I'd fly with pride.
Remind me about The Maze.
