Hello
As a father of 4, I play eve with the possibility of my young children seeing me play and looking at things in-game.
I have recently seen a few really obcene usernames in the area surrounding Suroken and my 7 year old son who is really good at reading picked up some foul language fron a user name.
Are there actually people out there looking for this sort of thing as i believe some names are beyond a joke.
I know my son is too young really for Eve, but I really appreciate someone actually preventing such names being used.
Please don't flame me, I am just a concerned parent.

EVE is teen rated.
You'll have to petition if you see a name that is against the EVE Online User and Character Name Policy.

I think i just found something saying you got to be 13
But honestly i still find the use of obcene language as a charecter name as disturbing even at my age

Its Teen rated IIRC, but with a warning that there may be mature content, due to the nature of it being an MMORPG. Pretty much the same as every MMORPG out there.

The rating is no reason for people to act like pubescent idiots. I consider it a form of PvP. They are trying to irritate me with their idiotic name so I irritate them by petitioning them.

Seriously now, it's well within your rights to petition the names, but bad language and cussing is everywhere, and only offensive if you let it be.

Am I the only one who got their hackles raised over this post?
I mean, yeah, I know where you're coming from... I have young kids, too. Hell, my eldest picks up things from shows I would normally think innocuous... like Spongebob.
The solution to your problem is not forcing a company to modify a game to protect your kids, the solution is not playing games (or watching TV, or listening to the radio... or... or... ) that you think might affect them in a way that they are not mature enough to handle when they are around.
Sorry, big hot button for me as we continue to dumb down society and put virtual bubble wrap on all the sharp corners of everything for fear of it hurting the children we should be protecting ourselves anyway.
Yes, I know it's a rant. It's a valid one. :P

I think you'll probably find your son has picked up a lot more foul language from the playground than from eve. Truly offensive names aer petionable and rightly so imo but in the scheme of things it is trivial unless you've managed to cal your character something like igasjewsand******ismyhero.
Start wearing purple for me now

I'm with Mechina on this one. When I was a kid (27 now) my parents tried to swear minimally when I could heard it. Ofcourse, once in a while I still heard them swear. When I was socializing (that is, playing war, playing with transformers and fighting) with other kids I heard "bad" words all the time. When I grew up I saw horror movies and besides, 90% of the movies have foul language.
I'll stop going on about my life but today, by some divine miracle, despite all the horrible words I've seen/heard I'm still a normal person. The problem is hardly ever that kids see/hear obscene words, it's parents who think it's the end of the world. As long as the kid has average iq and the parent has normal social skills it's entirely possible to explain why the word is bad and why it shouldn't be used. And what IF the kid uses a foul word once in a while? Will the devil take them or what? Besides...they'll use bad words they get older anyway...
I want to point out that I'm not pointing fingers at the op and judging him as a parent. I've yet to have kids myself but from my own career as human being what I've written is my firm belief.
*edit*
Though names that do violate the rules laid down by CCP should go ofcourse.

There are name and word filters in place in the game and on the forums. Sometimes, names or words make it through the filters. If you find an offensive name in-game, send a petition in. If on the forums, send a mail to the moderation team ([email protected]). The GM team or Mods (depending on the location) will take appropriate action.

We found a guy named S#%* Face in-game once while kieron was in the help channel. He disappeared for 10 minutes, and when he got back, there was no more S@%^ Face...

I've always been very anti-censorship, and while I see how this bothers you, I very strongly believe that if your child is old enough to READ, he's old enough that you really need to teach him about some of the unsavory things he might read. If you believe that "foul" language is morally wrong (a belief that I don't share, but do not in any way begrudge you), then I think you need to teach him that it does exist and that it is wrong, and you need to teach him now before somebody else teaches him about it. Trying to shield him from it, instead of pre-empting it by teaching him yourself, will only make things worse.
Maybe this is just more evidence that I'd be a terrible father, and I should add it to the "Why I'm not having kids" list, but maybe not. That's my idea, take it for what it's worth.

While I see your point, and I don't personally think it wears well on people to use swearing as part of their name, I'm afraid I can't bring myself to feel any sympathy about this issue for you.
If you're sitting your kid down in front of the screen, and you don't know what's coming, you have really only yourself to blame. Either you deal with the potential that he's going to see swear words on a name, or in chat, or while watching HBO or something, or you don't.
Don't rely on some referee to do your parenting for you. Either the content is suitable with supervision or it's not.
