Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy a 20" TFT screen and I'm having trouble deciding between a standard or widescreen model.
It breaks down like this:
standard 20" 1600x1200 resolution widescreen 20" 1680x1050 resolution.
Are there eve-players that have perhaps tried both and have a clear preference? Or maybe someone who plays eve at these resolutions can post a screenshot so I can (hopefully) make an educated choice.
EVE is my main reason to go looking for this screen so other applications aren't that important to me.
thank you!

personally I just love my 19" 4:3. One thing to note is a 20" widescreen is actually a fair bit smaller than a 20" 4:3, I'd be looking at the 21" or 23" widescreen against the 20" 4:3 tbh... ------------------------------------------

I'll second the wide screen. Once you've had one, you'll never go back to a 4:3 - -

May I recommend you read this article on Toms Hardware?
The upshot of it is that the widescreen LCD monitors on the market now have poor performance compared to similarly specced 4:3 LCD screens:
Quote: I have to say that 20" 16:9 monitors left me with mixed impressions. With their disappointing video performance, they can't really fulfill the potential of their movie format. The poor reactivity of the models we tested won't really let them compete as gaming monitors, either. To us, their only advantage is their screen resolution, higher than what standard 4:3 monitors provide.

Im kinda in the same situation, trying to decide between: 19" 4:3 1280 x 1024 20.1" WS 1680 x 1050 27" WS 1280 x 720
But the 20.1" wide gives very little screen space on the height. And Eve dont have support for either of the above widescreens resolution. So kinda leaning towards the 19" anyway. The 27" is more of a LCD-TV then a monitor really, and think it would be too slow (for changing pixel color) for games.

omg. Someone please tell me EVE *does* support widescreen resolutions fullscreen.

I got a 17" (4:3) 1280x1024 now Tsukiko Kuro... and I often find the screen lacking in size to fit everything in screen comfortably. I play eve fullscreen.

I'm pretty sure eve does run on widescreen resolutions fullscreen, it does whatever resolutions your drivers tell it you can do. --------------

I am on a Apple 20'' Cinema Display at 1680x1050 and it rawks Prod. You can set the resolution with the EVE prefs, no problem.
Actually, whole XP rawks on widescreen.

I have a 17 inch wide laptop screen running 1440x900 and it's purdy... it also helps when you have multiple windows open, such as multiple chat windows. It works out nice. ----- I want my sig h4xx0r3d by Oveur! ...but I'll settle for any mod since Oveur can't h4x like the best of 'em... |

I use a widescreen at home and personally i think its excellent for eve... for 2 reasons
You can have 2 acc running side by side in and still be able to see most of both the accounts at a decent size
if just using one account on fullscreen, widescreen spreads everything out, you have more central viewing space as the chat channels and overviews are pushed out wider, if you are in 0.0 and have local in a seperate window aswell, squeezing everything in becomes a bit hectic.
Hope that helps a little

WIDE
edit: i red someone posting about performance on TomsHardware, that's a load of *bleep*, i also got one of the oldest TFT's there are and even with FirstPersonShooter games i dont have any "ghosting" or "screenlag", if your screen timing is less then 30 m/s < your good to go, if not you can pod me for free.

In Eve, at least to me, the thing that's really nice about 16:9 screens is that you have the extra space for your overview and chats, without interfering with your center view of space. Personally, I use a laptop with a 1920x1200 display, fullscreen is awesome. Even better, if you like multiple clients on one machine, 1440x960 windowed on the 1920x1200 display gives a nice view of both clients.
My desktop pc is a standard 4:3 monitor, and I rarely use it anymore for playing Eve, except to run an extra account.

The Dell 20" uses the Same Panel as the Apple and is Cheaper too! (and more Features) Also Ditto Waht the OP Said about Toms Hardware being Full of Stuff. I trust my Eyes not Tests and Specs when it comes to Gaming Monitors. And Ive found that while Sites like Toms talk a good game when you do your own Tests (I have the luxury of testing different gear where I work) you often find out that they make mountains out of molehills.
I have played EVE on the Dell 2004FPW.. I am saving my pennies as we speak!

I play on a Dell 2004FPW at 1680x1050. EVE is *very* nice at full screen. The window size option just picks up whatever your card can pump out.
You (OP) say that other apps don't matter too much. If that's the case, I'd fully recommend a widescreen LCD if EVE is your main/only thing. It's also great for just general "computering" if you know what I mean. If you're editing text or reading forums in hardcore mode, rotate the display 90 degrees and you have some serious window height.
My only two (very very minor) regrets about going with the 20.1" WD instead of a 19" 4:3 LCD is many of the other games I play don't support widescreen either natively, or via hack. In those cases, the monitor (this Dell model, anyway) allows you to stretch the image across the whole screen (ugly), stretch it vertically but retain the 4:3 ratio (a bit fuzzy), or play it at 1:1 resolution (nice and crisp). In the last case, playing a game at 1280x1024 at 1:1 on a screen with 1680x1050 pixels is... underwhelming.
Also, the relative lack of vertical height makes me a bit sad. When I go to a friend's place and look at their 19" 4:3, I wish my screen was as tall as theirs.
In any case, if you play other games, check out www.widescreengamingforums.com to see if they're supported. It's becoming a bit more common. I really enjoy playing CS Source at widescreen. If I gave a S#!T about WoW, I'd enjoy that too.

24 inch widescreen, 1920x1200.
Save up, go even bigger. At worst while you are waiting the prices will come down.
I don't worry about how other games look, once playing Eve there are no other games!
