Just noted after checking a planet info that the orbit time was listed. Is this just there for RP or what is the info there for? |

They do not orbit in the game. Too much work to program, no real reason to anyway. |

That would be pretty cool! However, my guess is that the planets actually have static positions in space. |

Yes, and no.
EVE planets are in EVE, EVE is in servers, servers are on surface of Earth, Earth rotates, Earth orbits Sun, Sun orbits Milkway Galaxy, ..., it's orbits all the way down until you hit turtles.

No. It would be very cool if they DID orbit, but that would add a lot of complexity to each system, and I can see how it would add quite a bit of load for every capsuleer logged into each system.

Eve is a static universe, which is too bad because a dynamic one would be so much more fun.
CCP, trading shiny pictures for playability since 2003.. EvE, a cutting edge game. The only game to provide Matrix style gameplay for the masses! (trouble is, most people don't have 9 hours to waste on a one hour fight.) |

It would also provide an advantage to the older players who would have the opportunity to create zillions of safespots along the planet's orbit over the years.
On the plus side, it would give people a reason to create spreadsheets/3rd party apps calculating when one of those safespot bookmarks is now at the center of a planet.

The orbit time, star age etc. is meaningless RP fluff. You can't even collide with the planets and stars, they are empty inside and you can fly through them. Everything in EVE except player content is more or less static.
For a non-static procedurally generated universe, where planets do orbit, space is not liquid and ships have crew, please check Elite II: Frontier, released in 1993.
Unfortunately, you can't scam for PLEX there. |

Pretty sure I've read in a blog/post from CCP before that the space objects originally did orbit in the physics engine code, but this was later disabled or removed for lack of any real gameplay function.
You would not be the first to challenge/suggest a change to that staus quo - give them a good reason and just maybe. |

Kinda suck with your bookmarks though.

Of course planets orbit
There rotation is based on how fast you spin your ship in space.

No, they do not. The original envisioning of Eve included orbiting planets, stars, and other objects, but there are mechanics problems along with computational problems of simulating simultaneous gravitational interaction between tens (hundreds?) of thousands of separate objects.

The planets, or at least their rings, *do* rotate though.
There is an asteroid belt inside the boundary of the planets rings in Jerma (IV belt 1 if I recall). If you sit in the belt for an hour or so, you'll see the rings go from being above the asteroid belt, to below it, and then eventually back. this is because the rings are not aligned flat with the axis they rotate on. |

Planets don't orbit in fluidic space, and would defy the laws of physics... To find such a place you would need to locate an interdenominational rift and voyage through the center of this rift in fluidic space to the other side. Yes, planets and stars usually don't exist in fluidic space either, but this transition only happened recently, all the tears accumulating over time filling space itself. GÇö+¬GÇö |

One half of a planet is hot as hell and the other is always frozen. People live only in the small strip in the middle, surrounded by wasteland on both sides. Why the hell did you think we went to live in space? Seriously sucks down there. |

They don't orbit, but they do rotate on their axis. Go up to one and watch. I was like whoa when I first noticed it. I think orbiting planets would be cool as hell, but probably would be way too difficult to code it. Plus it would mess with your bookmarks to your POS and so on. |

Problems with bookmarks might however be seen as positive by explorers - giving them yet another passtime/occupation - keeping the POS coordinates up to date. Though with the technology available to capsuleers loosing and object in orbit might seem silly. |

I doubt it will mess with your POS bookmarks, the POS would be orbiting the planet with the moon. Safe to say, assuming bookmarks save orbit positions in real time, not a static point in space. |

They dont, which sucks because it really takes away from the illusion of space. If you want orbiting planets, you'll to play a space simulator like Kerbal Space Program, Space Engine or programs like that. Planets rotate and orbit stars. Total budget: Zero.
But otherwise a really, really awful game. Still, point proven.

They don't orbit, but they should.
Bookmarks could be made relative to a reference point. If your POS orbits a moon orbiting a planet orbiting a star, and you make a bookmark in the tactical overlay plane, 100km away from the POS sunward, the bookmark's reference becomes the closet item from a list of items (such as stars, planets, moons, POSes, stations, etc.) and as the POS orbits your bookmark orbits to stay in the same place, relative to its reference point, the POS. |
